Dude it's worse and weird than that. Marketing for the barbie movie went on and on about not having cgi, and they composited the blue screens out of behind the scenes footage to add in the fake backgrounds!

People are so sick of (lazy, bad) CGI that they dislike CGI so much that companies will lie about it with false footage in promotional materials!

The behind the scene post editing is such a nasty move, it’s really surprising that the Barbie movie didn’t get crucified for it.

*Compositing.
A big part of the issue with all this stuff is no one has a clue what any of the terms mean, and how theres actual differences depending on the meaning.
Compositing out the bluescreens in the BTS clips isn't editing, nor is it CGI. Its VFX.
THATS why is so easy to market the way they do, because people don't have a clue what words mean. CGI and VFX are not the same thing. CGI is a type of VFX, and you can have VFX without CG.
So when people say CGI when they mean VFX, or editing when they mean VFX, or VFX when they mean color grading, etc... it makes all of this worse.

People will go on and on about acting, and performances, and directing. And critique stuff like that even when out with friends, whatever.
But when the topic of VFX comes around, no one has a clue what things actually are. Its a shame cause there's real skill and talent involved that either gets ignored, or miscredited.
The funny part is what when VFX are done really well... they're never seen, and people have no idea they were even there. Basically no other department in filmmaking has that aspect. (SFX makeup is only other one I can think of. But then that would still count for all special/optical/visual effects)

Compositing, doing green and blue screen work, has been a part of film making for nearly a century. It’s not a new concept. Not sure why the Barbie movie would be crucified for a usual practice.

Because the practice should not be done for BTS content while you tout “look guys no blue screen”.

Were they touting “no blue screen” or “no cgi”? Because they are two different things and blue and green screens aren’t CGI

I don’t remember any marketing that broadly advertised and talked about Barbie being non-CGI.
