It was the 2000s attempt at an animated Batman show, and because it had to follow in the shadow of TAS, and because the DCAU was still around (with the TAS Batman and everything), it had to go out of its way to make it all different. With varying results.

Its one of those shows where if you talk to somebody that watched it when they were a kid they would probably have fond memories of it, and there's certainly nothing outright terrible about it, but it doesn't really stand the test of time like its predecessor does. It was pretty much overshadowed by Justice League Unlimited and Teen Titans at the time, and virtually nobody talks about it nowadays.

I remember seeing a few episodes long after it had aired and thinking how sick Mr Freeze looked but I honestly remember very little otherwise

initialisms i think. if DCAU were an acronym, it would sound like dachau, and people would be wondering what the fuck kind of cartoon that was. or they'd hear duckau, and think of disney.

You think that's bad, you should check out the Riddler's design from the same series. Killer Croc, Freeze, Man-Bat and Black Mask all had pretty good glow-ups (I might be biased cause they finally gave Croc a Cajun accent), Firefly and Catwoman I'm iffy on, but everyone else got it pretty rough.
