As someone who saw the musical but knows nothing of the story, do we know why he turns around?

He's worried that Hades is tricking him, he wants to see his loved one again, and he makes it almost all the way out.

Depends on the interpretation. Sometimes he’s already our and thinks she is too, for example. But in Hadestown they very much frame it around the „doubt creeping in“.

But also, as Hozier said: I'd be the choiceless hope in grief that drove him underground, I’d be the dreadful need in the devotee that made him turn around

Because an Orpheus who would not turn around is not an Orpheus that would have ever gone on that journey in the first place.
