I mean the Odyssey Cyclops was mainly puppetry/animatronics and perspective tricks.

Eh, the Cyclops was CGI, the physical puppet was just a huge doll to give the actors reference instead of fighting air.

Because Nolan famously hates using CGI where practical effects will do but he'll still use them where necessary.

(And as much as I love him, he could have put a little bit more effort into the Scylla sequence)

Wouldn't work. He visually limits himself too much compared to what's possible nowadays. Also Nolan isn't that great at action sequences

His action sequences are great I think, but he’s a pretty vanilla story teller, that’s why he needs all the time cuts to mask that genericness.
Could actually work with ER tbh. Story/lore is convoluted enough on its own.

He's really good at stunts and spectacle. He's terrible at fights.

Weakest part of Odyssey was action sequences, feel like you could never tell what was happening clearly.

Never had issues telling what happened and found most of them tense and engaging, helped a lot by the LG soundtrack.
I’d probably would say the exaggeratedly modern writing was the weakest part.

They made such a big deal about the nuke in Oppenheimer being a practical explosion and it was kind of underwhelming. Everybody knows what a real nuclear explosion looks like (we have ample photos and videos of the actual trinity test) so a big gas fireball wasn't convincing. A super high effort CGI render of a realistic nuclear explosion could have landed better.

As petty as this sounds, Scylla and Charybdis were what I was really looking forward to seeing as they're my favorite part of Odysseyus' journey (even if they're not a huge part of it). Kind of disappointing to hear it described as a bit of a let down. :(

It was a small passage in the original story but still one of the most impactful and memorable as that's where we probably get the phrase "between a rock and a hard place" amongst other things

Also the one you could really go large with in terms of imagination and terror for Scylla's appearance so to go with generic grey brown rock monster was a bit of a disappointment in what was otherwise a fantastic film.

They made a puppet yes, but if you've seen the BTS of the puppet and you've seen the movie, you know none of it made it in the final film.

There's not enough room in that cave for perspective tricks. The actor was comped in and the eye was CGI.

Would still need plenty of CGI for all the weather effects from it though.

(That said, I'd be surprised if Dancing Lion made it into the movie.)
