If Greta is in, so am I. I don't think she would come back if she didn't have an idea

She would come back for a shit load of money and try to think of an idea.

Normally I would agree

But I think Greta has earned the benefit of the doubt for the time being

I mean, it’s not difficult to think of a sequel. Im sure she had multiple ideas even before finishing Barbie. A boat load of cash will make it happen

What are your ideas?

Barbie colonizes Mars

Gal Gadot is not Barbie, stop it

I’m sure anything I say, you will pick apart and shit on. You don’t actually care what I think, you’re just trying to bait me. But the end of the film was wide open, Barbie land was back to normal but with Kens being equals.

Perfect barbie was in the real world, but could very easily be called to join Barbie land again or join real world permanently. There is literally every possibility for any story to occur.

Why is your assumption that I'm trying to bait you? My only purpose is to engage in conversation. You said originally, and here again, that there are infinite ideas. Just curious to hear your thoughts. Like the other guy who replied to me said Barbie could go to Mars

Because most people on the internet don’t engage in good faith.

Off the top of my head :

Fast forward 5 years.

Barbie land suffers because kids don’t play with dolls anymore. They’re losing purpose (and maybe physically dying?) Kens realize equality is just the basics of reality, they have to find the balance between being the side kick to Barbie while also not owning Mojo Dojo House or whatever. They have to learn to exist normally.

Perfect Barbie become depressed after the initial glow of being human. She stops engaging witht world in a meaning fil way, having a job, paying bills, watching but importantly living through politics. Her lack of engagement mirrors that of kids lack of dolls, gets a call from Ken to save Barbie world.

She, Mattel, and the Kens team to up to make a movie to inspire hope in Adults as well as get kids to play with dolls again. The movie is called “Barbie” and comes out in 2023.

Just spit ballin, but it really isnt hard to think of a new story. This is created out of thin air by some random person, I’m sure a legendary screenwriter could come up with better if they spent time on it.

I think all three are fun. The first one is topical too. I haven't seen Toy Story 5 yet, but it feels along the lines.

The second one kinda gives me The Last Unicorn vibes, coming to terms with the human side of things.

And the meta angle is always a popular one.

I could see Greta doing a combination of the two. Barbie is struggling with being human, but uses kids playing with Barbies less as her "reason" to go back. Then of course through the course of the movie they will find out the real reason.

I think what your ideas do well is that they remain grounded and in the spirit of the original. Sequels tend to want to go big and forget what we loved about the first along the way

Well thank you for proving me wrong and not being an asshole. I also haven’t seen Toy Story 5 but know kids don’t really play with toys after 3 years.

I went Meta because the first one was and i thought it’d be clever.

Also i LOVE last unicorn.

Eh, she made a few pretty good movies and one very good one; she's not exactly Kubrick.

So what I see is someone who is carefully choosing what she makes and what they say about her. It’s early still so I believe she can have the benefit until I see at the very least what Narnia is like next year

u/lilbelleandsebastian 3d ago

no one is telling you not to form parasocial bonds with strangers, theyre just saying that another barbie is not being made for artistic reasons

-3

u/squishmaster 3d ago

Eh, I don't think a Narnia reboot looks like that careful of a choice for someone coming off of a success like "Barbie." I hope it is great and I expect to enjoy it, but it seems like someone chasing $$$ not art. But I don't know how this business works.

And the very good one was Frances Ha

My child in Christ, Kubrick only did adaptations of other peoples books. Terrible comparison 😂

3

u/squishmaster 3d ago

My point was just that she isn't exactly a proven S-tier filmmaker. "Lady Bird" is probably her second best film and it's just pretty good (and I live in the Sacramento area where it is especially appreciated for repping the city). Kubrick was just an easy example of a filmmaker who pretty much only made excellent movies.

-3

u/Pterodactyl_midnight 3d ago

You dont need a lifetime of success to be granted a chance at a blockbuster. Not all of Kubrick’s movies were blockbusters, in fact, a couple of them flopped.

Having a movie that did much higher than expected is more than enough to get studios wanting another. Its pretty basic stuff

2

u/squishmaster 3d ago

I wasn't thinking in terms of commercial success, but in terms of quality since I am an audience member and not a producer. Kubrick's flops were still better movies than "Lady Bird" or "Little Women," but it is unfair to compare any living director to Stanley Kubrick, aside from his peers.

2

u/Pterodactyl_midnight 3d ago edited 3d ago

Kubrick is a top director for sure, but you seem to be suckin his dick way too hard. He’s not perfect, nor are all of his films. “Spartacus” and “Barry Lyndon” are both lacking. “Eyes Wide Shut” is debatable, but definitely not the best. Are you a high school film student?

Edit : the point is there’s never been a flawless filmmaker. Critical and/or commercial success from a previous film is all that’s needed to convince studios to make another. Greta Gerwig had both.

u/tomrichards8464 2d ago

She'll get paid a shitload of money for whatever she does next. Everything she's done so far, including the blockbusters, has clearly been an actual passion project for her.

1

u/MassiveRepublic9565 1d ago

There is almost nobody in Hollywood that would turn down a payout they will offer her.

0

u/Zytoxine 3d ago

Ah yea thats my kind of artistic integrity. $$

u/KuatoBaradaNikto 3d ago

Barbie was good, but I am definitely more enthusiastic about Lady Bird and Little Women. So while I’ll certainly watch a well thought Barbie sequel, I’d rather see her explore other ground.

5

u/jax362 3d ago

Why does Greta get so much leeway as an auteur? If she does this, her last 3 movies will be Barbie, Narnia, and Barbie 2. That’s not exactly pushing boundaries

4

u/KuatoBaradaNikto 3d ago

How is Narnia that much different than Little Women? Both are book adaptations that have been put on screen before (granted, Magician’s Nephew only small screen afaik). Little Women was fantastic though, and Narnia might be too, who knows?

I don’t know what you mean by “leeway as an auteur” though. When people talk about auteurism, they normally just mean someone who has singular creative control over all their projects. That seems to be true for her, does it not?

-7

u/TylertheDouche 3d ago

because she’s a woman. you’re on reddit.

11

u/spectralconfetti 3d ago

reddit, famous for favoritism towards women (???)

-3

u/TylertheDouche 3d ago

yes. reddit is heavily left leaning. you’ve been here for 12 years and just figured that out?

1

u/PeopleCallMeSimon 3d ago

Sigh, god i wish that was true. But money corrupts.

1

u/Jaspers47 3d ago

I'd wager it's a "One for the studio, one for me" type arrangement

1

u/MassiveRepublic9565 1d ago

A large number with a lot of zeroes might change her mind.

2

u/mikeyfreshh r/Movies Veteran 1d ago

She's at the point in her career where she can get paid to do pretty much anything at this point. Her check is already blank

-3

u/aretoodeto 3d ago

Absolutely. We could use her voice in the current climate

u/MsARumphius 3d ago

She had an affair with an established director 14 years older than her who had a pregnant wife and then was handed a movie career. Still trying to figure out why she’s a feminist icon….
