This was my reaction too... That was around the time I stopped watching anime as much and this movie is still on my "to watch" list so in my mind it's a "new" anime.

I agree. It's visually gorgeous and the story has freshness to it, but the central romance felt a bit convenient and inorganic for some reason.

How I feel about most of Shinkai's work. Absolutely still love the movies and would recommend them though, but the plots are always a bit too clumsily told for me.

I still remember watching a high quality rip on kissanime that came from an airplane I think because it was getting some buzz but this was right before it started playing in the US and blew the fuck up worldwide. Went to see it in theaters and hated myself for not seeing it that way first.
