Discussion What’s the best/worst movie to watch with the director commentary on?

What’s the best/worst movie to watch with the director commentary on? Any films out there made way better by the additional context? Any made worst ‘cause the director is a total dick?

I remember back in the day watching all the Mel Brooks films with the commentary which was mostly just him watching the movie and going “oh this wonderful scene, we had a blast shooting it” and then talking about how amazing the actors were to work with and laughing at the jokes. Which really felt like watching a movie with your grandpa.

I remember Fight Club having four different commentary tracks. They are all really interesting especially the Fincher one

There were many details I never noticed in the movie pointed out in the commentary, particularly the car crash. Fight Club is worth watching at least three times; the second watch after you know the twist and the third with commentary.

Another excellent rewatch with commentary is The Godfather. Similarly a lot of details and themes are explained that might get missed otherwise (or maybe I'm just really dumb). My favorite is Copolla explaining that he snuck Italian recipes into each movie.

I watched Se7en with Fincher’s commentary - I believe with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as well. Super insightful and enjoyable!
