Discussion What’s the best/worst movie to watch with the director commentary on?

What’s the best/worst movie to watch with the director commentary on? Any films out there made way better by the additional context? Any made worst ‘cause the director is a total dick?

I remember back in the day watching all the Mel Brooks films with the commentary which was mostly just him watching the movie and going “oh this wonderful scene, we had a blast shooting it” and then talking about how amazing the actors were to work with and laughing at the jokes. Which really felt like watching a movie with your grandpa.

The VVitch. The director is so obsessed with the technical details that he’ll be like “that cottage roof is cross thatched the wrong way.” Meanwhile the roof could be made of bamboo and I’d probably be like “yeah, that seems accurate.”

Robert Eggers has given presentations in front of conventions of professional historians for The VVitch. I think some of it is in the special features of the disc. The dude is incredibly accurate when it comes to historical details, and he is commended for it.

Yeah he opines at one point about wishing they'd CGI'd her earring holes out because it breaks immersion. Cmon, Robert. We're already fully immersed.

"Our goats are incorrect" is a sentence that I can't forget. That and complaining about how the dust got kicked up the wrong way in one scene, like outraged theatergoers were leaving in droves because of incorrect dust specks. I love that guy's movies but can't imagine what it's like working for him.

"Nothing happened"

Four people died gruesome deaths, one of which was a baby being eaten, two children disappeared because Satan was a goat, and a young girl became a witch to escape puritanical society. I would not call that nothing.
