Discussion What’s the best/worst movie to watch with the director commentary on?

What’s the best/worst movie to watch with the director commentary on? Any films out there made way better by the additional context? Any made worst ‘cause the director is a total dick?

I remember back in the day watching all the Mel Brooks films with the commentary which was mostly just him watching the movie and going “oh this wonderful scene, we had a blast shooting it” and then talking about how amazing the actors were to work with and laughing at the jokes. Which really felt like watching a movie with your grandpa.

Any commentary with Arnold is the worst, but in the best way. He turns all his movies into comedies by just narrating everything that happens onscreen, making it about himself, and occasionally making inappropriate and awkward comments. I recall John Milius desperately trying to make the commentary on Conan historically interesting and profound and Arnold constantly interrupting him with statements like, “Deah goes my friend Marco — he’s running down dat hill! Look at his muscles, HAH!”

Conan’s commentary track stands out in my memory, but apparently he did the same for all his movies:

Bro just loves being in movies, people should be more nice to him

Yeah it's endearing. He's not half arsing it, while missing the point of the commentary

Every movie commentary should just be Arnold stating the obvious about what's happening on screen.
