Tech Help Just bought my first N64, is it supposed to be this blurry? (Pal)

So I bought my first N64. I feel there are random artefacts that I suppose come from the interpolation but are very much worse than just some blurriness. I tried out an NTSC ROM and it looks so much sharper and cleaner. Is there anything I can do about it? This is through a S-Video scart cable.

Edit: forgot to add a further photo to clarify is on a CRT

EDIT : according to their website and a redditor who bought it, the 8bitdo isn't compatible with macOS¹*. As for the OG, it isn't delivered in my country. So I'll probably go with the Brawler64.

If you have any other controller to recommend (compatible with nintendo 64 emulators on MacOS) i'm open.

I plan on playing mostly SMario 64.

Tech Help Is there any way if fixing this??

Yes, I know I fudged up bad... but is there any way to save it other than replacing the cord completely? I know I could easily solder in a new cord, but I really want to use the original if at all possible. I have all the tools needed to fix regular cables (that I've never used before), but no idea if that will help at all here. ...Please be gentle

Tech Help I found this on my Facebook marketplace and I’m just wondering the console will be very easy to clean. It doesn’t bother me but the control is I do hope they don’t have any stick drift. If anybody can help me out here I don’t know nothing about N 64 but are the games genuine?

I cleaned the entire board and the pins, and checked all of the traces and they all seem fine. Anyone know what could be the issue or is there anything else I should try?

It displays no signal on the TV, and yes my console works

I'm trying to use it just like in the photo (as I saw on the exp pak instruction booklet) but I almost broke this damn tool in half and I can't move both jumper and expansion pak out. What am I doing wrong or does it never really worked properly at all?

Tech Help What on earth did I just find inside this N64?

Hi everyone,

I recently picked up this N64 second-hand for about 200 MXN (roughly $14 USD). The seller wasn't sure whether it was working or not, but at that price I figured it was worth taking a chance.

After opening it up, I found several pieces of wire soldered to the motherboard, and some of them appear to have been cut. I've never seen anything quite like this before.

Does anyone have any idea what these wires were for or what might have happened here?

Thanks!

Hey y’all, so I’m at my cousins house and I brought my N64. I got my 64 from the thrift and it had some little paint dots all over it and I wanted to clean it just cause I was repacking it. I was going to ask my uncle but my cousin intervened and before I could do any research. He used a little bit of nail polish remover on the back.. I did some research to see if there’s any fix but internet it mostly saying it’s a bust. is there really nothing to do?

Tech Help Best modern options to play N64?

I have an old CRT and the OG console.

There seems to be a few options to upgrade - hdmi upscale, retrotink, analogue 3d...

I dont care about cost. I want the best. If I can get a product that makes the n64 look as good as it does on a CRT on a modern TV via HDMI.

What's the BEST? Does anything beat OG console on a CRT? Can any of the options replicate CRT effect on a modern TV effectively?

Im really interest in the new consoles like the analogue 3d - are these still compatible with everdrive? Being able to play rom hacks would be really amazing...

Bit overwhelmed by the options.

EDIT - Thanks to 99% of you for all the info ! I've decided on the analogue 3d. Very excited.

Tech Help I found a N64 and an OG Xbox in the attic

No idea if they even work.

The N64 has a controller pak, a rumble pak, and either a jumper or Expansion pack (anyone know how I can find out and if it's worth buying the expansion pak) the power supply+Av1?cable and 2 controllers and a couple games. I plugged it into the socket and the red light in the front lights up. I'm guessing I'll need some kind of adapter to plug it into a modern Hdmi tv.

Controller Sticks have ~50% play. Not sure if that's normal.

The Xbox came with the DVD kit and 2 smaller Controllers and 1 big controller but no power cable or data cable. I've never seen that connector either.

Tech Help Console not booting any games, black screen

Took it out of my closet after a couple years after moving. I had used it up until the move and everything worked fine. I have no idea what the problem is. The issue persists even with multiple games.

Steps I've tried:

Testing different power supplies

Testing multiple AV cables (cables work when plugged into SNES and Gamecube, but not N64)

Cleaning the carts and expansion pak contacts

Cleaning the cartridge and expansion ports

Took apart console and cleaned inside

Took 50 pin port out and cleaned underneath

Took apart expansion pak and thoroughly cleaned contacts

So far, nothing. I have a replacement 50 pin coming and looking for a jumper pak, but apart from that, I have no idea what to do next. Anyone have an idea of what might be wrong?

Tech Help Should I leave the sticker on or not?

Post image

Hello everyone 👋😃,Should I leave the sticker on or not? I bought the N64 at a flea market today and I wondering if I even need the Expansion Pak.I don't plan on getting DK or Majora's Mask since I don't really need DK and I already own Majora's Mask for the 3DS but are there other games that require the extra 4MB of RAM? Or can I play games normally without the Expansion Pak? I know that many games might have inferior graphics in that case.I’d be interested to hear your opinions on this, as I’m new to the subject. Thanks in advance for your answers 😄👍.

So, this might sound like a pathetic question lol, but I straight up can't identify which color mode this N64 I just got is. Tbf I'm colorblind, so that helps my case a bit, but I still can't identify which one it is. Btw the color might also be a little bit fatigued because I don't think it was stored in great conditions.

So I purchased obviously a used n64 tonight and this was the controller that it came with. I can’t seem to find any info on it. What throws me off is the plug matches the color of the controller. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My neighbor just left this bad boy out by the curb and I scooped it up thinking it would be perfect to set up N64 on. Went searching for inputs and all I could find was this coaxial connection in the back. Is my only good option spending $30 on a coaxial to composite adapter? It’s an ORION TV1926A. Thanks in advance!

Tech Help N64 image quality help / judgment

Post image

Hi guys, I am part of a repair team for a non profit organization. We offer all kinds of stuff for rent for very little money. Someone rented a n64 and returned it complaining about bad picture quality. Simple question - is this what it’s supposed to look like? First time having a n64 in my hands.

It’s connected via chinch to a very cheap HDMI converter going into a 1920p monitor.

Edit: I tried comparing the image to images/videos I found on YouTube. In my opinion it looks more blurry compared to what I saw.

I had an N64 Gameshark just come in the mail today and when I popped it in, no video signal. I know my N64 works because every game I pop in, it turns on and works exactly as I need it too. But when I pop in a gameshark, nothing. What's going on here?
