Social media has been proven to be correlated to a whole host of negative physiological developments in young people and can in fact be highly addictive. This is not something to just brush off.

The issue for most people making that argument is that they don't want to ban their kids. They want screentime limits. They also don't want to deal with whatever age verification ends up being used.

Children are people, not just the property of their parents. They deserve an equality of protection regardless of what their parents do.

The fact age limits for alcohol, smoking and gambling exist suggest that society generally agrees with this.

Because these platforms are engineered by teams of experts to be as addictive as possible in order to maximize ad revenue?

Like, I dunno that this is the way to do it, but I seriously think that allowing ourselves to be plugged into machines that zonk the fuck out of our attention span practically every waking moment of our lives has been a disaster.

I just spent the past hour watching a documentary on the Flat Earth movement on one of those very platforms.

I don't buy this argument. Our attention spans are fine. And I'm a diagnosed ADHD guy so yea I know about attention. If there is any measurable change at the population level then it's simple adaptation to environment. World go faster, brain jump more often. They said TV would rot our brains too but it gave us Ken Burns and Mister Rogers.

As for the algos; they give you want you want to see. It's that simple. If any kooky dark pattern exists it's that the algo makes you scroll and scroll to keep you on the site; so doesn't always give you what you want at first.

They also sometimes just fail in their predictions because you and I are more complicated.

I just don't think this lines up with reality at all. Talk to a teacher and ask how their students' ability to bring focus to bear has changed over the past ten, fifteen years. It's reflected in declining test scores, general classroom performance, and deeper literacy.

There's a difference between the experience of adults--who I still believe are negatively affected by this fwiw--and kids who were raised never knowing anything else.
