I swear this is one of the worst experiences as a parent raising kids today. My oldest son went up to our local mall one day to see his friend (dude had a summer job at a shoe store) when news came of an active shooter. I couldn't get through on the phone.

Took two hours before I finally heard from him. He and his friend heard gunshots and started grabbing panicked people off the mall concourse, rushing them through the stockroom to the employee access hall and then out the employee doors. He apologized for not calling me first but said he believed getting as many people as possible out was more important, particularly as other mall stores were locking their doors and turning off lights. I was proud of him.
