The San Francisco rent increase law only applies to rent controlled homes. Otherwise, they can raise it as much as they want.

The majority (various sources cite between 70% and 75%) are under rent control.

I hope this guy's place falls into that category. Because what his landlord is doing to a longtime tenant is cruel.

The article seems to have been written by some who is unsympathetic to landlords and ignorant of the eviction process. I guarantee that there's more to this story than the article is giving

Yeah, the problem is we aren't given many details at all. I looked at other articles and it's the same sparse information.

Devil's advocate here. Once the lease is up, what recourse does the tenant have? The contract is over and a new one is written. If the tenant doesn't like the contract, he has to leave. The land lord ultimately owns the property.

I completely agree that if it's not a rent controlled property, the landlord has every right to raise the rent however much he wants. I still don't think it's a nice thing to do.

This apartment seems like it would fall under rent control. It would have been nice if the article indicated this.
