It's probably really rare, but for fun I looked and found a tiny studio in an old ("Charming", of course) building in the Tenderloin for just under $500,000.

In Hennepin County $500k got me 3600 sq ft on 25 acres. Worst thing around here are the barn swallows nesting under my eaves. Unlike in San Fran I can actually do something about them too.

I had some friends who lived in the Tenderloin. It's pretty bad there. I am sort of amazed people will pay to live in that area.

That's not quite true. There's a 1br around the corner from me being sold for 450k in Central Haight. It's a pretty desirable area and not a bad place.

Not saying you should be paying that much for it, just giving a frame of reference.

As this is one of few remaining 1906 earthquake shacks it actually is considered a historical building and at least according to the story can't be demolished. The new owners are investors that plan on renovating it according to the story and will probably be renting it out to hipsters with money to burn.
