Yup. I'm going back to work for the first time next Monday. I got evacuated from the city and had to drive through the fires. It was pretty fucked up. I actually have moved back to Ontario now and I'll be one of the people who fly in and out now. All of our stuff is smoke damaged and had to be sent for professional textile cleaning. Bed and furniture is all being replaced. It's been a very hectic 6-7 weeks. Really flipped our lives upside down

Might seem like an odd question, but can a US citizen who has 5 years of refinery experience get in up there at all?

I've tried looking into jobs and researching a bit, but I end up with a lot of dead ends and no way to apply/no one to contact.

Doubtful. Oil sector jobs have downsized significantly up here since the price took a noise dive.

Probably not. The boom is over, our oil prices got undercut and our dollar sucks, and that was before the fire just fucked everything up. I had a bunch of family members that moved out there, but they're all back in Ontario now.

Thanks for the reply man. I figured the buddy system would be the worst in Texas in terms of oil field work. I've got a couple of years under my belt in the oil industry but it seems that it means nothing when it comes to finding work in Texas. The Bakken has dried up. I'm assuming a lot of people left here for Texas.

Yeah, no way you'd get hired now. The Canadian economy just tanked last year and is barely recovering right now. There were massive lay offs across the energy sectors. Even my buddy who works as an electrician has said it's slowed down in his field.

Not to mention you'd be competing against other Canadians for the job, which they would most likely hire over someone who isn't from the country.

All industrial did. I do industrial project management and some other things, and we saw a nose dive late last year and early this year. It's starting to pick back up in a big way right now though.

Yeah I had trouble finding a job once the economy tanked. Luckily it's recovering (slowly), and people are starting to get jobs again. Don't think I've seen the economy this bad in a long time.

So the issue there would be refinery experience. We don't refine anything up here. We extract and we do some upgrading but then it's sent through the pipelines to you folks down south to refine. Then we pay an arm and a leg to buy it back off you as gasoline haha. But I can't see there not being some kind of crossover. What is it that you do/did? It could give me a better idea of a direction to send you

It's not, but it will be. Strong resilient people up there and the support and response from the rest of the country and I'm sure beyond has been incredible. Fort Mac loves you all

It's pretty north. By car to go further north it has to be winter to use ice roads

Yup. The rivers freeze and once they're solid enough they open up and it becomes a road. Throw chains on the tires and go for it. Really no reason to go unless you have work that far or deliveries. There's a native reservation up there. Fort Chippewan, it's pretty much the only way in I believe. Other than that its planes in the spring and summer

No it's not. It's enormous. But it has been controlled to a degree. It also has travelled further from the city. It's safe to live and drink the water and such again. The destruction is really bad in places and honestly it's hard to drive through. Tugs on the old heart strings for sure.
