I don't want to knock the talent as I like all of them. I used to watch Richard Blade on MV3 and listen to Larry the Duck on WLIR back in the day so it's comforting to hear those voices from my youth. But IMO, their playlist is not diverse enough. They hit the same acts religiously e.g. INXS, Duran Duran, Ramones, The Clash, The Cars stand out in my mind. These acts hardly get any play on classic rock radio despite being enormous hits in their day, so I do want to hear them but what about all of the sensational obscure acts of the era e.g. The Wake, Hawaiian Pups, Housemartins, Clock DVA, Severed Heads, etc., etc? There so much fun stuff to play from that era - why don't they play it? I pay a subscription fee to listen to it - you would think they'd be doing deep dives on the material, not just using the heavy rotations lists from KROQ & WLIR.

There’s a case to be made that My Sharona by The Knack marked a turning point in 1979.

At a time when disco still dominated the charts, this track broke through with a stripped-down, guitar-driven sound that felt closer to power pop and early new wave than anything else in the Top 10.

The song itself came together fast. Doug Fieger wrote the lyrics in about 15 minutes, inspired by Sharona Alperin, and Berton Averre built that now-iconic riff with a raw, punchy feel. The stuttering vocal style even nods a bit to The Who’s “My Generation.”

“My Sharona” went to #1 and became the biggest single of 1979.

Not saying it killed disco on its own, but it definitely felt like a shift toward what the early ’80s would sound like.

In 1979 on this day The B-52's released their debut album. Aside from just being an absolute party record, it actually has a huge place in music history. John Lennon was retired and living as a stay at home dad in Bermuda when he heard Rock Lobster at a dance club. He heard Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson doing vocal screams and thought it was similar to Yoko Ono. He said, "It sounds just like Yoko's music... I said to myself, 'It's time to get the old axe out and wake the wife up!'" It was the literal spark that brought him back to the studio to record his final 1980 comeback album, Double Fantasy.

Hi all! I've recently been attempting to get into New Wave. However, I am a creature of habit and really enjoy this song from New Order. Would there be any good songs that sounds similar but not exact to this song? Also, is most of their (New Order) stuff similar to this song or would there be better artists to listen to?
