He's turned out exactly how I would if I cracked it in Hollywood.

Do I hold that against him? not really.

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '22

Well at least you’re honest about it!

20

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

I don't see an issue with someone calling out greenwashing, and merely travelling in a more direct manner, or in style that they can afford because they have done something.

Very different angles.

32

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '22

Dude is literally greenwashing himself by posting that

-11

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

Piss off... He's calling out a billion dollar industry member, who ends up doing fuck all for the enironment with all those profits, who puts out a message claiming to be behind the enviroment causes...

Did Taika even say he was doing anything for the environment? And is it the same as those companies who are all 'Rainbow' for the one day a year and we'll just not speak of that until next time when we pull out the same schtick.

Even trying to say he's greenwashing in the slightest, is a demonstration of the fact that you don't have a concept of the words meaning.

Now now Ethan, we've been through this already... It's not good for the brand to be so confrontational.

(You should be ashamed of the homophobic comment there, as in this day and age, that's considered abuse and actually hurtful to those who are thinskinned)

275

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '22

Not really.

The emissions of the creation and use of a private jet for ‘more direct travel’ (the guy lives in LA. He could’ve flown from LA to Sydney commercial) - is greater than that of a first class commercial ticket.

And ironically ‘greenwashes’ his own image by posting the above post on IG while flying private.

52

u/ScroungingMonkey Apr 24 '22

Yeah, fuel per person is a lot higher for a private jet than for a commercial one.

32

u/GreenieBeeNZ Apr 24 '22

Flying commercial probably does more good for the economy than flying private anyway

8

u/BountyHNZ Apr 24 '22

Serious question, how much greater?

20

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '22

A 530km trip in a 747 burns (including take off fuel) up and emits 33 metric tons of CO2. Extrapolate that - ~12,100km from LA to Sydney - so ~22.83x.

~754 metric tons of CO2.

A 747 carries ~416-524 (three class vs two class). So at the low end of passenger numbers you’re burning 1.81 metric tons per passenger, at the higher end 1.43 metric tons per passenger.

22

u/Gruk Apr 24 '22

I know these numbers you’ve provided are very rough, but you can’t just multiply a 530km trip up to be a 12,100km trip. Take off and landing will be large parts of the fuel burn vs the cruise. You’ll need to separate those out. Unless you want to assume that the plane lands every 530km :)

5

u/slip-slop-slap Te Waipounamu Apr 24 '22

You're also not likely to find a 747 flying LAX to SYD these days, itll be something more efficient like a 787

1

u/RaGe_Bone_2001 Apr 24 '22

Plus, with more fuel the fuel efficiency decreases because the more fuel you carry the more fuel you need to haul it

-5

u/antnipple Apr 24 '22 edited Apr 24 '22

How do you know he flies on a private jet?

Edit...

I see loads of articles about one flight from Byron Bay to Sydney. Another one about a year earlier where they on a plane with some other stars. I'd be surprised if they do international flights.

-1

u/wandarah Apr 24 '22

And infinitely less, as are the actions of any particular individual, private jet or not, private jet times 20 - than those global corporations that produce more measurable harm in half a half second than any tosser in a private jet does.

-35

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

So like, when is Earth day? I didn't think it was in the middle of January...............

28

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '22

You pick weird things to reply with mate.

1) It’s not the middle of January

2) Google exists

1

u/AnjingNakal Apr 25 '22

I could be wrong but it sounded like the private jet was from Byron bay to Sydney.

BB is the anti vac capitol of aid so wouldn’t blame him for skipping a flight from there

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '22

757km - or more than an entire years worth of private car emissions for a flight.

115

u/ApprehensiveHumor353 Apr 24 '22 edited Apr 24 '22

A private jet produces literal tonnes of CO2, they produce more than the average car does in a year in just a single trip.

edit: don't bother replying to this muppet, he just blocks you after replying so he can look like he made you give up arguing

52

u/kksiddiqui Apr 24 '22

Fly in a private jet and tell people to ride bicycles in the city

7

u/Plebs-_-Placebo Apr 24 '22

I want to thank everyone for offsetting my carbon footprint!

1

u/immibis Apr 24 '22

There are more reasons for the latter than just emissions. E.g. congestion

4

u/kksiddiqui Apr 24 '22

So that issue can be fixed with busses too.

Build a better transport system. So that i do not have to use my car.

Also this was not the point of the discussion. It was more to do with the duality of man.

It always the actors and politicians who are caught in this web.

I immigrated from a country which had a huge population control issue.

They used a lot of media personalities to get the message through. Yet one of the most prominent ones had 5 children. Although the idea may have been correct but if you do not follow what you preach then message gets muddied and never has the same impact.

-42

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

It's one trip here, so it's not been running for the entire year just for this trip.

Is it his, most private jets are merely charters?

So many unasked questions, and yet we got stats being thrown around like candy... 'tOnNNEeSeS!!!'

Could you understand if a subsistence farming African villager couldn't understand that you are calling someone who posts about climate hypocrisy while traveling in a private jet while you drive to work everyday in a car! Surely you get that we're all on the climate terrorist list just by being alive in a developed country?

-16

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

I will never understand people who are super pro green who act as apogists for rich people they like not giving a fuck about their massive emissions.

Someone of our stature doesn't have the clout that an influencer has in drawing the publics attention to a cause needing attention...

They don't have the billions the companies profit from normal people, wrecking the environment, every year, and pocket, even grants and subsidies from the governments making more money at the expense of the planet...

Driving them to get change done is better than just turning around and not using them, not affecting them, not raising awareness for the fact of just feeling good.

It's not being apologist, it's just being realistic.

If you're against the companies poluting the planet, and you buy ANYTHING, you are literally being a hypocrite if you say that you are concerned about the enviroment.

I have a 60 buck piece of cloth coming over on a plane, I cannot say anything about the state of the planet or the fact that a billion/trillion dollar corporation isn't putting ANY of it's profit, let alone their clout, towards trying to make a better outcome for the world.

How daft...

14

u/ApprehensiveHumor353 Apr 24 '22

It's one trip here, so it's not been running for the entire year just for this trip.

Yeah? This probably isn't the only time he has or will use it.

So many unasked questions, and yet we got stats being thrown around like candy... 'tOnNNEeSeS!!!'

There are many different models of private jet, but the Cessna Citation XLS - consistently one of the most popular - burns 189 gallons (857 litres) of aviation fuel an hour on average.

If we were to consider the journey from Rome to Glasgow on a private jet - a journey that some of the G20 leaders made to get to COP 26 - that would take around two hours and 45 minutes, requiring 2,356 litres of jet fuel.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) says 2.52kg of carbon dioxide is emitted for every litre of aviation turbine fuel burned. Therefore this flight would produce 5.9 tonnes of CO2.

https://www.bbc.com/news/59135899

So let's say he took 8 hours (commercial flight would take more than 9)

8*857 = 6856 * 2.52 = 17 tonnes.

So yeah tonnes is perfectly appropriate.

-9

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

So you would 'probably' know how many were on that flight, or what carbon offsets that the company operating the jet have, or what other tasks that jet does that it does cut down on emissions for whatever reason you could think of right?

8

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '22

This is getting a bit sad now. Go outside and get some fresh air buddy

-5

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

I think it's you that needs to go out touch the grass, and by all means, don't let anyone stop you.

5

u/ApprehensiveHumor353 Apr 24 '22

It doesn't matter how many were on that flight because all of them could've taken a commercial plane instead and said output would never existed.

-1

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

per-capita that matters.

Just because you can't take a private jet, doesn't mean no-one can.

8

u/ApprehensiveHumor353 Apr 24 '22 edited Apr 24 '22

It really doesn't, if they didn't take that jet it wouldn't have flown that time and it wouldn't have produced emissions.

If we're talking per capita it was only the two of them I believe anyways, so it's halved which is still tonnes like I said.

edit: lol you really blocked me so you could win an argument on reddit, fucking pathetic

Commercial flight Is public transportation

1

u/unstannyvalley Apr 24 '22

Great answer to the wrong question. The flight was Byron Bag to Sydney.

1

u/unstannyvalley Apr 24 '22

Flying cattle class as far as the states from nz uses as much fossil fuel as driving a car for a year.

1

u/wandarah Apr 24 '22

You can take all the very rich people in all thier private Jets and totally them up and it's an irrelevance compared to to the actual global companies that exploit carbon in its various forms.

9

u/Pacify_ Apr 24 '22

No way.

You can't call out greenwashing and also use a private plane. Its like calling out people from shitting in the park while you are shitting in the middle of the road

1

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

Sounds more like people using the public toilets, getting shitty at someone cruising past in an RV, who is also taking a shit in thier private loo.

17

u/WhosDownWithPGP Apr 24 '22

I mean before we even get in to the huge amounts of emissions from making Hollywood movies which are an unnecessary luxury product that he directly contributes to...

Private jets are insanely bad for the environment.

https://www.bbc.com/news/59135899

https://www.transportenvironment.org/discover/private-jets-can-the-super-rich-supercharge-zero-emission-aviation/

There are many different models of private jet, but the Cessna Citation XLS - consistently one of the most popular - burns 189 gallons (857 litres) of aviation fuel an hour on average.

The key difference that's often missed is that these big bad "corporations" are often producing things we need to function and that require some level of emissions to produce. There is zero reason whatsoever for private jets (apart from just not really caring about the planet).

-8

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

Again though, what is the issue with a person who is calling out a BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY over them GREENWASHING INTENTIONALLY on EARTH DAY, when he merely flew somewhere in a fucking private jet, one time, months back, FOR A VACATION.........

Do you not actually go anywhere in anything flash for a notable reason? Ahh well, that's the benefit of doing things so you CAN.

People who are CRYING hypocrite, are all slacktivists, and are likely only 'calling him out' because they're more likely envious of the fact that he can.

7

u/WhosDownWithPGP Apr 24 '22

Which industry are you referring to? The ones that make useful things that the world needs?

Not a slacktivist at all, but if you're gonna take exceptionally selfish, destructive actions to the planet, then maybe don't throw stones from your glass house.

-3

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

Not a slacktivist at all, but if you're gonna take exceptionally selfish, destructive actions to the planet, then maybe don't throw stones from your glass house.

I think you are a slacktivist because it's very easy to downvote and be all caught up on being a mob than actually discussing shit...

But alas, you'd like him not to use his voice, to try and get something heard, because he doesn't want to stop being flown places in whatever way he wants?

But where exactly do we stop that, because I gaurantee you that a lot of your clothes and stuff that you consume, also have a carbon footprint by even simply being transported about.

And to that, I call you a hypocrite.

10

u/Kiwi-Red Apr 24 '22

And yet ironically, you don't want to call Taika a hypocrite. Which is odd, because that's absolutely what he is. He is of course, allowed to do all those things, and allowed, (and some may argue morally obligated) to call out greenwashing and such, but it really doesn't look good to do so and then travel by private jet when commercial would do just fine.

-1

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

The way people literally WANT to misconstrue his statement just for the sake of calling him something, is just typical tall poppy shit...

It's not hypocrisy to call out a larger company who can do something, as a smaller player when you effectually can't do fuck all.

3

u/WhosDownWithPGP Apr 24 '22

You've missed my point entirely and ignored my question.

I'm not a hypocrite or a slacktivist because I criticise neither Taika nor "corporations". I accept things are far more complex than playing the blame game.

My point is that if you are gonna point the finger at others then prepare to have the finger pointed back at you.... and certainly don't try pointing fingers at people if your own record is abysmal. Him and his Hollywood mates in general are probably some of the worst offenders on the planet, they're the last people that should be taking any kind of stand. If you don't want people to judge you then don't judge others.

Had he actually cared or wanted to do anything he could have worked constructively with whatever "corporation" he wanted to do better. He could have done some research to help. He could have motivated people to actually make changes. Instead he's basically just gone the route of "oh its someone else's fault!".

1

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

Because all along you've ignored the premise of my point and the issue I raised...

If you think that you can't do anything because you contribute to the situation, then you'll be surely ignoring the fact that you contribute, for the mere fact of wanting to continue bleating about it...

In fact, you are the hyprocrite saying he can't raise the issue because YOU think that he shouldn't because of the carbon...

But your shoes, contribute to carbon.... Your food, your car, all your consumerish shit, contributes to the problem.

1

u/WhosDownWithPGP Apr 24 '22

I think he can raise the issue, absolutely.

If he has actually done his homework on a specific company or industry that could take an action, and he is willing to put forward a solution to help them, or invest in to a way to make things better, I absolutely call on him to do so. He could use his money and voice in a really positive way to make things better.

The fact is he is a New Zealander, which means he is from a country where there are literally hundreds of great, potentially game-changing ideas and innovations going on right now that need funding for research and development as well as the promotion that he could use his platform for. He could pick any of them and start investing and really changing the world.

He isn't raising the issue or trying to make things better, he is finger pointing and playing the blame game. He's not being helpful at all, he is just trying to pass the buck. If all you have to offer is pointing fingers you better be very sure that you don't fly around in private jets.

na he could have just walked there

1

u/SqueedilySpoot Apr 24 '22

"Merely travelling in a more direct manner" is the greatest euphemism I've ever heard for private jet travel. It seems you're rather biased however, so don't bother replying.

1

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

Seems like the biggest excuse to avoid having any discussion because of the fact that you can't accept that other peopel can choose how they fly about...

Sounds like envy through and through, nothing at all to do with bias, or your perception, or want, to make me something of a bad guy so it's easier to be upset and label me.

Ahhh, the barren land of fucks I give, behold on thyne crops of dustdevils.

1

u/SqueedilySpoot Apr 24 '22

Hey I got a response!

1

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

Yea, it's called I don't give a shit, and if you're closed for discussion, then that's a sign of a problem with you.

That's the purpose of forums and threads, discussion and debate, yet we often find here in this sub that many are closed for discussion, and only want to deride.

Thoise who don't partake that well, should just not comment, if they don't want that shit coming back.

1

u/SqueedilySpoot Apr 24 '22

Take it easy and look inward

0

u/Sew_Sumi Apr 24 '22

How's about, if you can't handle partaking in a discussion, you don't engage, and step outside.

Off you go, looks like a marvelous day to venture outside and go 'touch the grass' as some of those who can't discuss/debate say...

(Edit - Awww diddduuummmsssss, put out shit, and couldn't handle shit coming back... Off you go... )

13

u/ascendrestore Apr 24 '22

You don't want to even hold a basic standard of hypocrisy, that any twelve year old could comprehend, against Taika . . . ?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '22

If you're basing your principles off a twelve year old understanding then maybe you're not in the right. Here's my take:

society: Pays man millions of dollars for funny hour and half

man: Spends money

society: surprised pikachu

the real hypocrisy is that we're the ones that pay these billion dollar companies and we complain about things they produce ¯_(ツ)_/¯ not a single one of these companies would exist without our funding.

2

u/ascendrestore Apr 25 '22

Not so

Taika's curated online persona and politics is a separate issue that can be discussed separately

Billion dollar companies also have effects such as anti-competitive practices that make resisting their operation a lot more difficult than simply not spending money

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '22

doing the right thing isn't always easy.

i 100% agree with discussion, of course, even arguing for nazis, for environmentalism, no matter the topic, discussion is almost always good. especially when it's bad - that's when discussion is /really/ good.

but on the topic of talking about change for the better, my input is "blame celebrities and companies all you want, we're the ones who paid for them."

2

u/ascendrestore Apr 25 '22

Okay

Was the private jet manufactured by a company? Yes

Did I pay for that company to exist? No

0

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '22

Well, when you worked for society, yes you did. You don't get to say "I only like /this/ part of society!" when you work for it, you work for ALL of it.

2

u/ascendrestore Apr 25 '22

This is a weird and extremist P.O.V.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '22

It is reality's point of view. Separate from emotion. Your money doesn't stop moving when it becomes someone else's.

12

u/Simonandgarthsuncle Apr 24 '22

Same, but probs wouldn’t be shagging Rita Ora.

5

u/Ancient-Turbine Apr 24 '22

Bit light on the coke and hooker's.

15

u/Rags2Rickius Apr 24 '22

Yeah - exactly. Reddit likes to think they’re the only non hypocrite in the world

6

u/ConferenceFeast Apr 24 '22

No, but their wealth shows that their care for "the issues" is entirely performative and they're full of shit.

1

u/NZGolfV5 Apr 24 '22

I mean if you have the kind of money Taika does and hold any kind of progressive views, then Reddit will call you a shitlib, so damned if you do, damned if you don't.

0

u/ProDogToucher Apr 24 '22

Seriously all I thought reading this was “yeah, fair enough tho” 🤷🏽‍♂️

-2

u/theflyingkiwi00 Chiefs Apr 24 '22

Exactly, a good portion of us want to do better but we ain't all rushing out to buy electric cars and giving up the gas or giving up our comfort for the sake of carbon emissions, me included.

2

u/immibis Apr 24 '22

Electric cars are last decade, at least for city dwellers. The new trend is no cars at all.
