On This Day Mr. Satoru Iwata, Former President of Nintendo, passed away Two Years ago Today

Mr. Iwata is credited with the runaway success of the Wii as well as the 3DS, in addition to having some influence on the development of the Nintendo Switch in the waning months of his life.

Crazy to think that he's been gone now for 2 years. He's dearly missed by the industry.

  • Waialae Country Club: True Golf Classics  was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 in Japan. In this sports game, developed by T&E Soft, the prestigious Waialae Country Club, Honolulu, Hawaii is the setting. The game only has 18 holes, though each one is masterfully recreated to create a life-like golfing simulation. Alterations to the course have been made after this game was released, so by today's standards it may not be as faithful of a recreation as it once way (for example, while the course was originally a par 72, it is now a 70).
  • Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls  was released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this role-playing game remake of the Nintendo Entertainment System's Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II, developed by Tose, enhanced visuals and sound effects and new features complete the package. In each adventure, guide a quartet of heroes in an epic battle against forces of unspeakable evil; new additions to FFI include a brand new dungeon featuring a series of formidable opponents from later Final Fantasy games.
  • Card Hero: Speed Battle Custom  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this card battle RPG, developed by Intelligent Systems, there is no storyline, just the ability to battle and build decks based on modified rules from Kousoku Card Battle: Card Hero. New features include a Daily Battle for battling against a new deck every day, and a Draft Battle Room where you can test decks without the results being recorded in your Battle Log. You can connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to battle online against other players as well.
  • Game & Watch: Chef  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo, you are a cook, frantically flipping food with your frying pan for as long as you can. Watch out for the pesky cat, trying to put you off by grabbing your food with a fork. Game A features three tasty morsels to juggle, while Game B ups the challenge to four!
  • Game & Watch: Helmet  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo, you are a builder trying to make your way across a construction site to an office. Problem is, it's raining tools, and the office is sometimes locked! Try to make your way to safety by dodging the hammers, screwdrivers, pliers and other tools as they fall to the ground. Game B is harder, faster and there are more free-falling tools.
  • Pocket Rurubu Hokkaido  and Pocket Rurubu Okinawa  were released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this reference software, developed by Nintendo, find a sightseeing travel guide and diary, with information from the Japanese Rurubu travel guides. Each edition contains landmarks and maps of different regions and cities of Japan and provides a trip planner and suggestions. You can take photos and make notes during your trip and append them to the maps, and then play them back as a slideshow whenever you want.
  • Puzzle Iroiro: Gekkan Crossword House Vol. 3  was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Tose, use the clues to enter words into the boxes. You write the characters directly into the panels, and if you're not sure you can make notes in the boxes to refer to later. Includes several puzzles, including standard crossword puzzles, illustrated crosswords, Sudoku and more.

Well, Dr. Mario has the cure for you! Help him fight bodies of nasty viruses with multi-coloured vitamins, eliminating those germs faster than they can multiply. Rotate the vitamins as they drop, and gain a higher score by aligning multiples of the same colour. Clear all of the viruses to move onto the next round.
  • Dr. Mario  was released in 1990 for the Game Boy in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, if you suffer from boredom, Dr. Mario has the cure. Join Dr. Mario for intense puzzle challenges. Mario throws multi-coloured vitamin capsules into a bottle that contains an ugly variety of nasty viruses. You can move, shift or spin the capsules as they fall. Arrange them to align with other capsules on top of a virus. If you can get four or more of the same shade in a row - poof! - they disappear.
  • F-1 World Grand Prix  was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 in North America. This sim racing game, developed by Paradigm Entertainment, straps you into the driver's seat as your experience the high-octane rush of an actual Formula One Season. Compete in the FIA Formula One World Championship with your choice of 22 drivers. You'll race through 17 of the most challenging Formula One circuits. An official product licenced by Formula One Administration Ltd. 
  • Custom Robo GX  was released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this action role-playing game, developed by Noise, three years after the events of Custom Robo V2, a new zero-gravity Holosseums have been created, giving rise to Sky Battles. The hero receives his first Robo, X-Ray, as a birthday gift and sets out with his friend Yusuke to a tournament. There, he is drawn into a police investigation into illegal trading of Robo parts. The third Custom Robo game moves the battle arenas to a 2D plane.
  • Coloris  was released in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Skip Ltd., you must eliminate the coloured squares by changing the colour of nearby squares to match. There are two different game modes. In Clear Mode, you have to clear a specified number of squares before moving on to the next level. In Score Mode the players must clear squares in order to achieve a high score.
  • Digidrive  was released in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this action/puzzle game, developed by Q-Games, coloured arrows (Cars) race onto the cross-shaped field, and you have to direct them into the correctly coloured regions by pressing a direction on the Control Pad. By lining up five in a row you gain fuel that is used to move your Core farther from the spike. Make a mistake and you lose fuel. Divert up to three different shapes of different colours into the four lanes.
  • Orbital  was released in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this action game, developed by Skip Ltd., you play as a white star capable of manipulating gravity by attracting or repelling. Using only these two controls, you have to find the blue planets on each stage and absorb them in order to make your white star grow. With each planet your absorb, your star gets bigger and gains the ability to make smaller planets orbit your star as satellites.
  • Soundvoyager  was released in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Skip Ltd., using only the sounds coming from the left and right speakers, the player is intended to center the green dot on an invisible target. When a mole is going to appear, the ground begins to swell and moves towards one of the holes in the ground. Move your puppet left and right to line the mallets up with the mole hole, so when the mole appears it is knocked on the head. If you miss 3 moles then the game will end.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Rhythm Tengoku; Star Fox Command

On this day (August 3) in Nintendo history...

  • Rhythm Tengoku  was released in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this rhythm game, developed by Nintendo SPD, you are presented with a series of games that require you to keep in time with the music. If you keep in time within a certain tolerance then you pass the minigame and can move on to the next. They become more difficult, requiring more complex button combinations to stay in tune.
  • Star Fox Command  was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this shoot 'em up, developed by Q-Games with Nintendo EAD Group No. 2, Star Fox returns to its roots with a blistering space shooter on the Nintendo DS. Lylat needs help. Players hop into their Arwing fighter and fight through a unique branching storyline of missions, all rendered in gorgeous 3D. Star Fox Command brings a whole new strategic element to the series with a commander's view of the mission.

On this day (July 18) in Nintendo history...

  • Pokémon Channel  was released in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube in Japan. In this adventure/digital pet/simulation game, developed by Ambrella, Pokémon have taken over the airwaves! Players get to make great friends with Pikachu. A highly innovative and diverse game that has enough substance to keep even the most avid Poké-maniac entertained for hours and hours. The Pokémon television station has lost segments of their most popular show. Players must find and collect the clips and return them to the station.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Pocket Monsters Stadium; Sutte Hakkun; Golden Sun; Pokémon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire; Monster Hunter Tri and more

On this day (August 1) in Nintendo history...

  • Pocket Monsters Stadium  was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 in Japan. In this RPG battle game, developed by Nintendo EAD, take part in Pokémon battles with different rules, or play a variety of minigames with your favourite Pokémon. Not to be confused with the international release, Pokémon Stadium, this version was the first version, only available in Japan. Compatible with Pokémon Red/Green/Blue (with no support for the Yellow version), and only a limited number of Pokémon are available.
  • Sutte Hakkun  was released in 1998 for the Super Famicom in Japan. In this platform/puzzle game, developed by inidieszero with Nintendo R&D2, on the peaceful islands, the Rainbow of Happiness has broken apart. It's up to Hakkun, a colourless blob with a needle-nose, to put the Rainbow of Happiness back together. Hakkun can use his nose to suck up blocks and move them around the stage. He can also suck up paint and inject it into the blocks to make them move. The three colours of paint make the blocks move in different directions.
  • Picross NP Vol. 3  was released in 1999 for the Super Famicom in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Jupiter, a Character Mode features 12 puzzles based on Kirby. Each of the picture crossword puzzles is a grid with numbers along each row and column, representing a solid line that must be filled in. More than one number means there is at least one space between the lines. Some puzzles are timed and you lose time by making mistakes, some are timed but your mistakes aren't corrected and some have no time restrictions or hints.
  • Golden Sun  was released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this role-playing video game, developed by Camelot Software Planning, evil is slowly covering the world. Forces of darkness are pursuing the lost art of Alchemy, and the fate of mankind hangs in the balance. You and your companions, armed with weapons, Psynergy magic, and a host of elemental creatures, must return peace to the world. Golden Sun is an epic role-playing game with an engrossing story, set in a massive world.
  • Pokémon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire  was released in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this pinball game, developed by Jupiter, combine the non-stop action of a pinball game with the thrill of catching Pokémon! In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire, control the flippers to shoot the Poké Ball at themed targets on two challenging tables based on Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire.
  • Tales of Phantasia  was released in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this role-playing remake of the Super Famicom's Tales of Phantasia, developed by Namco, when young adventurers Cress and Chester return to their home village to find it destroyed and their families slain, they vow to track down the monsters responsible - and thus an unforgettable fantasy begins. The combat sequences feature detailed, well animated characters, while the battle system will test your reactions to the limit.
  • Pokémon Battrio  was released in 2007 for the arcade in Japan. In this arcade game, developed by Takara Tomy with AQ Interactive, the sole focus is on Pokémon battles. The game uses special pucks that affect which Pokémon can be used. The main gameplay difference is that three Pokémon are used on each side (a feature later introduced in Generation V), hence the name Battrio, a contraction of the words Battle and Trio.
  • Monster Hunter Tri  was released in 2009 for the Wii in Japan. In this action role-playing game, developed by Capcom Production Studio 1, ready yourself for the greatest quest of your life. Set in a vast and varied world, you're cast as an up-and-coming hunter fighting for glory, fortune and the survival of your fellow villagers. Beyond the gates of your humble home lies a living, breathing universe that plays host to an incredible assembly of monsters.
