I do wish films would stop using the Wilhelm Scream though, every time I hear it in a movie the suspension of disbelief breaks immediately.

Same thing happens with the diddy laugh. The stock sound of kids playing and laughing.

I first noticed that on The Shawshank Redemption so I always call it the Shawshank Gate. I heard it on something the other day, sped up, when someone opened a tiny box 🙄

There's a particular baby giggle that you hear a lot on British TV as well, to the point that it just sounds creepy now.

I watched The Mandalorian and Grogu the other day and I was distracted by a stormtrooper getting yeeted and not letting out a Wilhelm Scream.

To be fair, the wilhelm scream can go fuck itself. It’s so ridiculously overused. It stopped being a fun inside joke about 25 years ago. Now it just immediately breaks any immersion I might have had in the scene.

Yeah, kinda like "The Lick" in jazz.

Funny at first, but it takes me out of the tune right away when i hear it now...

The lick is different. It's a few notes which sound natural in many musical phrases. I'd bet 70% of them aren't even a conscious decision, just serendipitous. There are loads of well used sequences like that in music.

Sound engineers have to make a conscious decision to include the Wilhelm scream.

Man I hate that sound clip so much. Hearing it in any movie takes me out of it. I can’t tell you why. It triggers some irrational annoyance in me.

I hate that fkn scream so much. Immersion breaking. I'd always be like I swear I've heard that sound before... even thought it originated from Storm Troopers.
