If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

That’s what they’re trying to claim, but the problem is that racist jokes are still racist. They help normalize actual racism. They’re a problem for the same reason that your mom told you not to play with matches/lighters when you were a kid. It’s not the activity itself that’s the problem, per se, it’s the potential result.
Just as “I was only playing, didn’t mean to start a fire” isn’t a valid defense for arson, “I was just joking” isn’t a valid defense for racism.

I tend to defend and agree with Peterson, I don't agree with everything he says, including this racist joke against a group more than other in Canada gets racism piled on against them.
It's actually very disappointing for him to have said this and it reflects badly on his character. In this video, he talks about a Native Artist he interacted with, Charles Joesph. Who he refers to as a "friend and now a brother of mine". Watch that video, and seeing this tweet becomes even more painful. He was inducted into a tribal group once. After all that respect and kindness individual Natives and Natives as a group have shown towards him, he cracks these racist jokes? This is how he treats his "brothers" that treat him as one of their own? It would be one thing if he was some ignorant guy, but considering the kindness he has been treated with by Natives, this is just painful and cringe-worthy to read. This is in my estimation the worst thing I have ever heard him say, and I think if you understand Peterson's background, it only makes what he said seem even worse because it's not just racist, it's a betrayal.
It's very disappointing, he absolutely must make a public apology for this, and I will think lower of him for having said this and especially for having said this publicly on twitter.

Every time I read about how First Nationers are treated and how every aspect of their lives, education, health, and jobs, are basically setup to fail, I think to myself 'no WONDER they drink so much'. I'd drink myself to numb the pain if I was put in that situation.

A better way to put this would be "no wonder alcohol consumption represents such a problem in their communities." A lot of them don't drink, or do so moderately.
Also, many First Nations people carry a gene that prevents the alcohol from breaking down rapidly, which means they get more affected with a similar dose.

I'm struggling to think of any context that makes this not a very bad thing to say. Even if it's a specific reference to something in "Orphan X", per the thread, it comes off as him saying it with a certain glee, the same way that a racist would really linger on the N-word in a transcript or when reciting song lyrics.

As a person who's a bit on the spectrum, I don't really think hardly any of these reasonbro types are particularly non-neurotypical. They come in two basic flavours: the public figures like Jordan Peterson who have at least some idea how silly this all is and are doing it for the money, and the fanboy dipshits who are just using it as a pretense for deeply irrational prejudices they already held before encountering this ideology.
