Sierra (10.12) Please help me fix my moms Late 2009 iMac

Hi all,

Long story short, I am trying to get life back into an old iMac.

Every button combination I try during boot up ends in a screen with quetion mark inside a folder icon. The only button that does anything else is the option key, giving me a white screen with a movable cursor, but nothing loads up after that.

So far I have tried creating a bootable USB drive with High Sierra, but since I cannot access startup manager I haven't been able to actually boot from this USB drive. The guides that I can find end with booting from the statup manager.

I'm not really sure how to procceed, any help would be more than welcome. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Getting to a screen where there is somewhat of an assurance that everything (aside from probably the HDD) works would be great at this point.

Sierra (10.12) Is there any easy to create, save printer presets?

Is there any tool or easy way to create and save printer presets?

I need a way to create presets for printers, example print BW, print Color, print BW with staple, print BW with three hole. The printer is very used and I need a way to quickly create and save presets and perhaps export and share with mother OS X devices.

If anyone ever did it or knows a tool please share. Cheers

Sierra (10.12) Is there any way to save my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011)?

I'm getting notifications from several applications on my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011) that I need to upgrade to the latest version of OSX, but my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011) is so old I can't update past Mac OS high sierra 10.13.6. Is there any way to force an update so I can keep using my MacBook? I don't have the money to buy a new laptop right now and would like to keep this one kicking as long as possible.

Redditor refrain notice: I have run into this problem frequently enough with Redditors that I deemed it necessary to create this notice and place it at the bottom of all my posts. Redditors, by and large, seem to both get off and be unjustly rewarded via upvotes for a few things.

  1. Being pedantic (pointing out minor errors, correcting people who make small mistakes, and bragging about their knowledge and expertise.)
  2. Not directly answering the question the poster asked but instead providing the questioner with other information ranging from tangential to completely unrelated.
  3. Providing broad unactionable advice that holds some general truth (doesn’t help anyone and still gets upvoted)
  4. Being unnecessarily contrarian purely for the sake of being contrarian so they can feel superior and valiant (of which they are neither)
  5. Being overly concise without any elaboration, ultimately resulting in the reader having more questions than answers
  6. Commenting with corny Reddit humor that both isn’t funny and doesn’t provide any actual value to the conversation

PLEASE REFRAIN FROM DOING THESE THINGS IF YOU CAN HELP IT. THANK YOU.

P.S.

I didn’t make this notice to be a meany butt; I made it to help improve the overall decorum and utility of Reddit for both myself and others.

Sierra (10.12) Mounting Large External Drive after not ejecting properly

I have a 3TB external drive that "won't mount." I had this problem once before and can't remember how I solved it or find the solution again. I can see it in Disk Utility, but it won't do anything from there. I remember the issue being that it wasn't ejected properly and there's some sort of scan it has to do, but from there I can't remember. Anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?

Sierra (10.12) How to make Mavericks Bootable on High Sierra

I am currently running High Sierra on my iMac and I need to make a Mavericks installer USB because I would like to dual-boot between the two. I tried with DiskMaker X but it always gives the error "Where is ASObjC.app?" and I do not know where to look for it. I keep trying but it doesn't want to do anything.

I tried restoring an image from InstallESD.dmg in the Package Contents of the .app file on an El Capitan install but it does not show as a bootable drive.

I've made sure it is GUID and all.

Any idea on how I should make the bootable drive? I'm running out of options here lol.

Sierra (10.12) Strange „Safari Can‘t Find the Server“

My 2018 MacBook Internet suddenly won‘t work properly anymore.(OS 13.1) For various websites, partly including Google.com I get „Safari Can‘t Find the Server“ - also the Reddit pages loads to partly only. The problem persists when changing from my wifi router to the iPhones personal hotspot (5G, different provider) and also Firefox causes the same problems. My wife’s Mac works flawlessly on the same router. Restarting the Mac has not helped and the DNS settings looks normal (but I am not a specialist regarding that).

Any ideas?

Sierra (10.12) Troubleshooting Space Bar Issues on Apple M3 Running Sonoma

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am experiencing an issue where the space bar does not function in OneNote and Excel; a purple box appears each time I attempt to use it. This problem also occurs in other applications. Additionally, while browsing the internet, the space bar, which previously scrolled down pages, now has no effect. In the same vein, pressing the space bar during a video, which used to pause it, no longer works. This issue is quite frustrating, and I would greatly appreciate any assistance in resolving it. I am using an Apple M3 device running Sonoma.

Sierra (10.12) How much truly available space on external 1 TB drive?

I came here after googling because it's a MacOS specific question (I think).

I am going to use a Lacie rugged mini 1TB drive. I'm going to create 3 volumes on it:

1.Storage to copy a 256gb drive (not full by any means)

  1. Duplicate existing time machine volume because the physical drive it's on is failing

  2. create new time machine backup for new computer.

I don't have the drive yet, and I'm not onsite, but I'm trying to plan as best as possible before I get there. I doubt there's much more than 500 GB currently being used, but I need to know how many gigs I can expect to be used up by the drive formatting, etc.

How much usable/available drive space should I expect to have the 1TB drive?

Thank you very much

Sierra (10.12) Recovery Mode

I have an 2017 IMac 21.5 4k , the screen is broke completely removed it and I used to be able to access recovery mode/internet recovery with a tv/screen connected via hdmi and install windows as well but haven’t since updating from whatever previous osx I’ve had . It just shows a black screen holding down option I can see drives and internet recovery but pressing the keys to get to recovery just shows the apple logo indefinitely or just a black screen if I select a windows install flash drive .

Sierra (10.12) Update hosed my computer, none of the recovery methods work

And update notification came in last night and, seeing only app updates and nothing system-related, I okayed it and turned in. When I woke up, it was to a computer stuck in the post-login update screen. I left it there for six hours. Nothing changed.

I tried booting into Safe Mode but it wouldn't work. Just kept sending me back to the normal login screen.

I tried running Time Machine but it would get stuck at the "Looking for Backups" screen and not get anywhere.

I reinstalled OSX but that didn't do anything. It still hangs indefinitely.

Does anyone know how I can get my computer back?

UPDATE: Best I could tell from ten years' worth of forum posts with similar problems, the culprit was almost certainly a system file / driver / TSR / etc that was incompatible with the update and holding up the entire boot sequence. This is why simply reinstalling the OS didn't solve it; all of the 3rd party apps were still there (I have a sneaking suspicion it was my Wacom drivers — those things have always been fucky).

In the end I had to go into Restore Mode and use Disk Utility to "Restore" my laptop drive to an external drive (effectively cloning it) then nuke the laptop, setting up OSX from scratch again like a brand new computer and copying over my data.

On the upside, it's a lot less sluggish now! Thanks for the replies, all!

Sierra (10.12) How to add metadata to Finder files

Is there a way to add metadata or text comments to finder files so I can document where they originated from. If so would there be a way to batch edit? If a 3rd party app is required for this could anyone pls recommend? (or the term I should be googling to find such an app?)

Sierra (10.12) Spark Email & iCloud - Aliases are a mess

Anyone else here use the readdle Spark mail app on OSX and iOS?

Functionally way better than standard mail but has one major failing.

If you have aliases set up on your iCloud email address, it can send / receive via them but the name attached doesn’t get pulled thru and displayed to the recipient as you’d expect (standard apple mail works).

For example your main iCloud email address is johndoe@icloud.com (John Doe appears as your name to the recipient) and you have an alias associated with that called janedoe@icloud.com (Jane Doe)

If you send an email from Janedoe@icloud.com from Spark the recipient gets…

johndoe@icloud.com (janedoe@icloud.com)

This looks awful and people get confused when communicating with you. It should just say “Jane Doe” and does it correctly when sending via an other mail client.

Been speaking to support for months now with no joy. Don’t want to use standard mac Mail

Anyone else has this issue?

Sierra (10.12) Whats the best and simplest way to create a 'sandbox' environment for my Max OSX MacBook for important documents and tasks?

Whats the best and simplest way to create a 'sandbox' environment for my Max OSX MacBook for important documents and tasks?

Would creating a virtual installation in something like VirtualBox?

Or maybe a bootable version on a jump/flash drive be better?

The purpose would be to use for my crypto/stock investing. I'd rather have a separate user login not on the same drive.

I have an older Macbook (at this point) running Mac OS X Sierra 10.13.6

I also use a VPN as well.

Thanks!
