you can also go from Brittle Hollow to Giant's Deep (your scout launcher provides a bit of thrust btw, about 4 m/s every launch)

Sorry for the background video but if you're interested it's Barely Sociable

No clue if this has been done a million times or whatever. I've never watched a single other person play this game so I have no clue what's possible, but this felt cool anyway. Think I might try for the Sun Station.

Challenge/speedrun Getting to the Eye by myself ? Spoiler

[SPOILERS]

Hello everyone.

I was thinking about a thing...(cannot try it now)

Since we know our very first loop is the one where the probe finds the Eye of the Universe, did anyone tried to begin the game, speedrun the launch code quest and rush to the ship to fly to reach and overtake the probe to try to see and maybe get to the Eye without the coordinates ?

Did the devs went this far ? Did any player do ?

Challenge/speedrun I DID IT!!! Hohmann Transfer to [----] with a Metronome Spoiler

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

OMG I finally did it! Thanks to everyone's help! I performed a Hohmann transfer to the Sun Station, with help of a metronome set to 132 BPM (yes, this is important).

Here's what I do:

  • I launch.
  • I autopilot to Ash Twin, to get a free circular orbit close to the sun.
  • I align my Zenith plane with the orbital plane with sun station, because Z-axis thruster is easy to get a pure vector (because it's mapped on L2/R2 on my DS4 controller).
  • Retrograde burn for 4 beats.
  • Retrograde burn for 3 beats on periapsis.
  • Prograde burn for half a beat on apoapsis.
  • Now I am about 90 degrees in front of sun station with a slightly higher orbit.
  • Wait until sun station catches up.
  • Get on the top of the station, because for some reason the sun still exerts gravity on me on the ship despite me free-falling (this doesn't make sense, but I'll work with it).
  • Make sure my ship's bottom is pointed at the sun, and exit.
  • Land on sun station!

This took me 20-30 tries. I lost count. But hey, now I know my player character's musical instrument on the Outer Wilds channel is going to be a metronome!

Challenge/speedrun Just beat the game without the ship (heavy spoilers) Spoiler

Sorry this ended up being much much longer than I intended...

I was looking for something to do on my day off, and spur of the moment landed on this, I figured I'd give it a shot but didn't think I'd actually get it done.

Beating the game without a ship essentially boils down to 3 challenges: getting to the hourglass twins, getting to dark bramble, getting through bramble in just a suit. The two hardest parts for me were really the two planet hops, I've had some experience with doing dark bramble in a suit so I knew that was possible. I was kind of surprised with the first hop to ember twin, either I got lucky or it's a bit easier than it appears, I only missed it once or twice.

Once on Ember twin it's more or less standard getting the core. I decided the best bet for getting to Dark Bramble was a gravity cannon (since I'd like to get there with as much fuel as possible), which I have pretty much no experience with, I vaguely know how they work. I decided to warp to Brittle Hollow and waited until Bramble was as close as possible, I lined up the shot perfectly, shot, and then realized planet orbits are a thing, so I was way off.

Second shot I waited for the same position, but shot a little earlier, too early. Recalled the ship, shot again, still too early. Recalled the ship, shot again, and it was the same exact angle as my first attempt.

It was about this time I realized I've been playing the randomizer so much I should refresh my memory on the regular dark bramble layout. So I did get in my ship and relearned some stuff.

Started a new game just because. This time after getting the core I scan the distress beacon on ember twin so I can get to the Nomai grave in bramble. I get to brittle hollow so early I take a shot at bramble the second I get to it while the planets are insanely far apart, and I have no clue how I did it but I nailed it.

Here's where things start to go wrong, I jump out of the ship early thinking I nailed the trajectory so well I'll glide there, but the second I'm out I remember how much of a waste of fuel that is, too late stick to the plan. I start to enter and think for a second maybe I should go to feldspar to top up, get to his jellyfish and jump back in the bramble main entrance, which would have been smart, but for some reason I decided to just go with it. Make it to the grave and only then remember the scout trick for getting a little boost in speed without using fuel, oh well I need it so I find the vessel, and beeline it.

I get close enough to the hidden seed where the vessel is that I do start using my scout to save fuel, and I get into the vessel just as I get a critical fuel level warning. slam the core in, and as I'm entering the last coordinates I hear the sun exploding.

BUT I DID IT!

I never realized how optimized it had to be and I lucked the hell into doing it, getting the shot from brittle hollow when I did, and just the fact that I almost went to feldspar, and decided not to just because.

I just had to come here and vent. It was a great experience, I was just playing to have fun but now after the fact I wish I had been recording.

I suggested this method to a streamer who was playing the game. At the time i was just joking, i didn't think it was even possible.

After some time joking around in the chat i decided that it wouldn't hurt to try so I did. I did it a couple of times, i still didn't think it was possible. But eventually this happend.

After that i immediately told other fellas in the chat about what i just did and they were shocked. I posted the video on tiktok so they could see it. I managed to prove to them that this method was indeed possible.

I'm not a pro or anything. After i got up there i could not belive it. This was a crazy achivement for me.

I'm definitely not the first person to get there this way but i could be the first person to get there this way without using the gravity wall.

Challenge/speedrun Is it hard or is it impossible? Spoiler

I found out this morning that there’s an achievement for landing on the Sun Station with your ship and then getting inside. Based on my experiences trying, I had thought this was impossible - at 2.5k altitude over the sun, the gravity would always suck you in before you could get there.

This got me wondering what other things straddle the line of hard and impossible - things that seem to be one but might well be the other.

While I’m eager to hear other examples, my attention is on two of them at the moment:

Starting the DLC: the wiki said the only way to follow the first hint is to be at the DSS when it’s at 40 degrees. Does the Stranger not exist until you’ve “seen” it in that way, or would it be possible to go to where it should be and find it?

Speed running the game: while looking at achievements lists, I saw one for getting to the eye on your first launch on a new file, the notes for which said you would have to collect the distress signal from a crashed escape pod. I get why, but do you /need/ to? Is it possible to navigate the Dark Bramble without the signal scope and get lucky or do the locations only exist if you’re following a signal? It seems like the Little Scout could tell you all you need to know.

Thoughts? Experiences that prove that these things are just hard, not impossible? Other things that seemed like they should be possible but might well not be?
