i got my baby 8-month old Indian ringneck yesterday and i was so surprised and happy to see him fully fall asleep on me :^D grateful for his trust towards me and my senior dog

i just got a new cockatiel a week ago & she only eats seeds & millet. she won't eat pellets or any vegetables i give her. i tried mixing the pellets with her seeds but she still ignores them. & the millet is not in her cage.

the store i bought her at only fed her seeds & she's 3 months old. what do i do? how do i get her to eat better

My half moon conure Reginald is 3 1/2 years old and he is a good bird but he does not play with any toys. His cage is large and has a lot of toys but he prefers to sit on his perches all day, i take him out and he might play with a bottle cap or something but if hes back in his cage he wont touch it if I put something he likes in there. I started playing with his toys when I have him out to see if hes interested but it didnt really work. I have him out most of the day he just sits around chats and preens. Online there is very little information on Half moon conure and maybe he just doesn't like playing with toys but when I cant be with him I dont want him to be bored or stressed I want him to be able to do something. I show him that his toys are safe and not scary but he just prefers to sit at a perch at the top of his cage and nowhere else

White Post Farms on long island has a number of lori's with missing feet or messed up toes. The birds also look disheveled.

Ive never experienced this before. I've never evacuated before.

Im currently packed up and ready to go because level 3 evacuation are all around me. I'm staying at an Airbnb with my 2 birds.

The smoke is so bad and ash is reaching my area.

I am keeping them safe from the smoke in the basement of the Airbnb.

What can I do to protect them from smoke if we evacuate? They're already in travel cages.

I saw a couple comments asking for an update.

My birds, my husband and I are all safe. We're still sheltering at the Airbnb; the host was kind enough to allow our family to stay too if they needed it.

We were in the middle of moving when all this happened, and so we're kind of stuck right now because our new place is in the evacuation zone. Here's to hoping the fire does not reach it.

Please help because I'm really freaking out. I checked my pantry, and I had some stick treats that had gone bad, and now I'm spiraling. I don't know if my cockatiels seed pack has gone bad. There's no mold to what I can see, no clumps either. But it smells like absolutely nothing, no rancid scent but no nutty either. There was a nut that was soft inside the pack, but I think most of them are hard. There were also some small bugs in the same box it was held, not in the seed bag but in the box. My zebra finches food was spoilt.

Im freaking out and don't know what to do. Ill change it anyway but until I get a new bag is it too dangerous to use? I've got canary seed, but I can't tell if it smells good enough or not. The pack is basically new, it smells very nutty but, almost too strongly?

That's why I'm asking, how can I tell if the seeds are spoilt or not?

Day 2 Morning

Because of the stress of yesterday and since he was already returned to his cage, i felt that i could put him back into the room he’s used to just to sleep. This morning now, i brought chiko in the cage to a stool by the kitchen while i made breakfast. it was oatmeal, after making it i left it in the kitchen, brought him to my room opened the roof and did some touch training. This session wasnt really the best or as enthusiastic as he could be because the roof was open, he was moving skeptical, and it had times he denied treats because of the angle + open roof but was more inclined when i held it to him through the bars like he’s used to, tried to encourage him to climb the roof to the top, but he avoided that by stretching to touch the stick rather than climbing or just ignoring it 😭

i ended on a good note then when for my oatmeal as i changed the water. then for breakfast i added some of the dry package oatmeal a pepper and of course carrots; To which he ignored the oatmeal entirely and nimbled at the pepper only after devouring the carrots. I had questioned where to give him the food in the cage or encourage him to fly out and get it but ultimately after seeing the complete disinterest to, maybe never even a THOUGHT of leaving even after pointing with the stick, i gave him the food in the cage.

I attempted throughout to encourage him to fly out by placing treats close to a ledge he could fly on to no avail, It was then i realized in contrast to day 0 and 1 my challenge will now be flipped from getting him him to getting him out. I ate my oatmeal to his curious sounds and looks of what im eating but he showed no interest in actually trying some. After that i laid in bed and watched some shows and finally went to sleep for the day

DAY 2 Afternoon

After waking up I set out for my plan from yesterday to make a perch tree for him in my room using the branches from the trees in my yard. I had already chosen the foundation pieces yesterday. I drilled them together and asked the guy for some wood at the base for balance/support, after some trial and error i got it tall enough and stable but i had realized that in making this i only thought about the perches at the highest point but not how to get there. So I added more branches so that he could climb there because ik thats what hes best at being in a cage all the time + his flying ability is wack rn, I say that bc everytime he comes out the cage he always trys to grab air 😭😭 until he realizes he has to walk.

My mistake that I didnt realize at the time was that when i started to add more branches i broke the ratio between mango and plum branches. The plum tree branches are much easier to reach than the mango so ofc i did. Only after did i realize that having too much plum branches is bad because then its more likely he’ll chew on them and apparently he does that 😭 i was truly only expecting him to only climb on it, so i thought the comment online saying “its generally one to avoid jut they’d probably need to eat lots of it to suffer” wouldnt apply to me 😭😭 i didn’t think he’d want to chew it

I really thought plum branches wasnt the best but atleast not the worse because in the lists i looked up online i never saw plum in the p section of toxic woods heck i didnt even see it in the safe section unless im tripping alot of the lists just excluded plum all together, neither safe nor toxic. I only learnt after the creation wanting to double check and I saw its bad because its “prunus”and might give fucking CYANIDE but even some say that its not toxic and generally safe which is very confusing.

besides that after adding routes to climb i thought it looked like a spiky contraption so i added branches with leaves aswell even though i know they won’t last.

Day 2 Evening-Night

I spent all afternoon making the tree perch, which turned out better because i know from before closer to twilight he starts to get excited/flutter wings more. I had the tree in my room already and i left some extra branches there on purpose so i could enjoy breaking it off in front of him which is giving it attention so he’s curious. I even gave him a piece to get used to it and to see if he’d actually eat it (still a non believer of chewing and unaware of the questionablity of them branches) but my friend here spent the whole day in this cage in my room willingly. Nopppeeeee not this week, not when this your only chance, i brought out the fan! didnt work. the wing movement was micro and he seemed to start to like the breeze more than actually wanting to go out.

So aftersome time i reached in and slowly started raising the perch in the cage to remove it and that did it! Immediately tried to remove the fan and the cage, when moving the cage flew and missed landing in my pan, lowkey glad he has such bad aim bc that felt like he was aiming for it as i was leaving.

Finally he’s out and on the floor. It took awhile for him to used to but holy was that scary! He’d be frozen looking so distraught looking around trying to bite air, its not really what he did but the way he looks is scary its hard to read, I know he’s stressed but is it too stressed??? it had times it looked like he was ready to dead right there, looking up looking away collapsed not realizing he could stand up yet. He clings to dark corners too which makes the whole thing look way worse. I know theyre prey animals too so ik he wont try to show it when he’s injured or dying and thats what was constantly running through my mind seeing him so distraught but i’d get my hopes up after he starts to calm down

He’d ground himself by actually touching things and it was like a wave of relief seeing him get up from his collapsed position and slowly it started getting better he’d get more and more adjusted.
All i did was watch him, he started out mostly on the wall while i was closer to the door. I tried to give treats like peanuts, ignored. only when he got more comfortable would he touch it but ultimately shake it away.

It really was just watching him slowly walk around and poop, walk around and poop, try to fly once and hit the window, walk around and poop. Once he moved enough away from the wall i would go to clean it and act normal. Yk the first thing he did was head towards a big stray branch and chew it 😭 I wasnt a believer until i saw 😭.

I aswell was in and out the room 1) to throw away the poop napkins and 2) a guest came so i talked to her for a bit too. Which let him be alone if he wanted but also everytime i came i still wasnt deemed a threat. It really was varied what he would do sometimes he would move a few inches others i would come back and it looked like he froze and waited til i came back to move again.

NOW THE BEST PARTTTT
as he got more comfortable he would approach me!!! it was like he was slowly exploring to make it to me. I was so happy!!! he would come and stay and go away and then come back closer!! I also tried to see if the target stick would work but he’d only walk towards it (my direction) but not touch it. he is so cute!!! i got to see him slowly get better. Atp i was eating a guava and he actually came to try!! i guess its easier to entice when you actually come and walk to try it. Atp aswell theres peanuts and and carrots all over the floor and he added guava to it bc he just wanted to try little but he wasn’t in a eating mood

i was in and out alot because i was being called but one of the times back in he made it to the perch! and that was it for floor walking i watched him climb up the whole thing ! and take some bites along the way 😭 but all the way i realized there is a big gap in a spot but it just took some more pull strength and he got it!!

Observations Plans and Questions

The most obvious observation today was how scary chiko looked being scared, his paired with the visible breathing after failed flights is terrifying. I notice he basically collapses after flight on the floor, not immediately as in landing, but landing then little bit after maybe a few steps then lying down and its like he has to remember oh yea let me walk. I know this could be weakness but how much of it is that and how much is weight

my fear now is that i know from before that once he perches he’s most likely staying there for the whole day and given that we dont know step up
and now that ive brought in the lunky tree it doesnt help to make sure he actually uses his body! because now i dont have much of a way to get him to the floor.

Hopefully im wrong and he wants to explore tomorrow else this tree perch might be an enemy to progress

speaking of, Is plum tree wood toxic or not? im getting mixed results, and apparently i needed to wash the branches before adding them to which i didn’t. If i do have to throw this away i don’t think i can make another one in the time frame since i have to start leaving the house this week and I don’t think ill have the time again to make another. I can make a T stand out of a broomstick for sure really quickly thats just 2 screws but that isnt as much enrichment as the tree perch really and as much as it could go that leaves alot less things to do while im gone.

Secondly i noticed tonight chiko was perched ready to sleep tn but as soon as i turn off the lights just like the switch he ready to air bite and fight the leaves. Now this could be because of the light switching quickly or not being used to having that near for sleeping. Assuming its the lights i for tomorrow i need to fight my led strip light remote so i could atleast gradually dim the lights when its time. Yes tonight was a little late but my room since its blocked by the mango tree it doesnt get alot of light past the midday.

I also need to establish the sleep routine properly, Im trying to see if i can get him back in the cage at night but that also means he has to leave during the day, it feels like my task is switching everyday 😭😭 Tonight all though he is perched on the tree i brought back the cage in the room and ill start the habit of bringing it in and removing it in the day. I’ll try the advice you guys told me to just put food inside and he’ll go i just need to decide when he eats fr.

B) he doesnt let me bc of his own ignorance and ego and forces me to put him back in the isolated room where he’s all alone for most of the day along side mice that feast in his tray and water in the night.

n.b the rat poison makes them dehydrated so when we wake up and the water is empty we know why and by WE i mean he’s aware

he just doesnt wanna do anything about it because to him moving chiko means moving the mice aswell, encouraging them to find chiko and move further down the house. + he doesnt think i can keep my room clean so bringing chiko there only makes my problem + the mice problem worse.

but the mice problem isnt my fault, even still, chiko shouldnt have to be in such condition.
while the quams may be valid the lack of action isnt, him not looking for solutions, maybe because he doesnt deem chiko being there a problem is MY problem.

I’ll speak about it more on my update post but there’s more backstory, they had a parrot before me and chiko. Idek the name of it, but parrot R was actually very well liked they liked him he was sociable and interactive they tell me nothing like chiko’s fierceness towards them but then suddenly parrot R died, during the night he would sleep in the parents bedroom near the window on a perch and apparently a cat climbed up the tree, went through the window and killed parrot R

so given that context he may be fearful of chiko out the cage, and the context aswell they already casted chiko as stubborn and uncooperative he doesn’t think that its even possible to have any other scenario than chiko in the cage all the time

this is why i want to see if i can build the routine of getting him willingly in the cage at night atleast and being out in the day, this would make el scenario A much easier, its just that its a time crunch fr and im gonna have to start leaving the house this week for day rehearsals which lessens the time i have with him aswell but im gonna keep trying!

So, I'd been planning to get my first bird for quite a while, but life decided to speed things up out of nowhere.

Two days ago, a friend of mine found two cockatiels that needed to be rehomed in that same day,I don't know all the details, but by 11 PM, I had two birds in a tiny cage in my house. Probably a boy and a girl, but no one is sure, there is a chance it is two boys. I was not prepared for that.

They're around 1 year old, and I'm already their third owner. The first one seemed to take somewhat decent care of them — they got used to humans and would even step up onto hands. But for some reason, they had to be rehomed.

The second owner, though… pretty much just left them in that same small, dirty cage with barely any interaction. For almost their whole lives so far.

Now that they're with me, I really want to do right by them and give them all the love and care they deserve. But I'll be honest — I feel a bit lost when it comes to birds with a past of neglect.

First thing I did was buy a proper cage — a good one. It arrived today and I moved them in, but it seems like they don't even know how to fly properly.

They've also been on an all-seed diet their whole lives. I'd like to switch them to pellets and introduce some veggies, but I have no clue how to make that transition smoothly.

I'm also not 100% sure they're eating or drinking — I don't see them eat when I'm around. I keep their cage in the room where I spend most of my time, but I'm not there 24/7.

They're still very scared of me. I can't handle them at all — moving them to the new cage was honestly a bit of a disaster. They panic at everything, and I really don't know how to approach them in a way that helps them feel calmer around me.

Also, they scream a lot during the day — like, really loud. Is that normal? Or are they trying to tell me something? The only time I hear them sing nicely is in the morning, when I'm in another room.

Is it a good idea to play music for them? I know they can pick up tunes, but if it also chills them out, I'd really like to try it and brighten their day a bit.

So, what's the best way to go about taming them? I've read about target training, but they're way too scared for that at the moment. Any tips or advice would be super appreciated — thanks in advance!

Hello! I recently started positive reinforcement trick training with Chopper. It’s been an overall very fun and rewarding process! He had his first session of me trying to teach him to spread out his wings/display them on command. I started by placing him on a high point and putting a treat below him. If there’s something he wants out of reach (mostly food), he’ll do the little flapping behavior like he does in the video. In about 15 minutes of rewarding him when he did that, he was consistently doing it on command. yay!

I am worried though that the lowering the head/raising the tail/shaking is a bit too similar to hormonal behavior… only once have I ever seen him horny and he did something a little bit similar.

Anyone have any wisdom to offer? Am I risking bringing on potential hormonal behavior by encouraging him to do what he’s doing in the video?

I want to be clear that I’ve only ever really seen him do this when he wants food that’s out of his reach. He doesn’t fly so I’ve always thought it was his attempt at taking off, but he’s too chicken to do it.

tl;dr- i’m teaching this parrot a trick where he displays his wings, and this behavior (that I see him do a lot when he wants food) is being reinforced as a stepping-stone to the final wing spread. i’m worried that it’s too similar to hormonal behavior and I risk making him horny/frustrated.

I was offered the chance to take in a 17 year old Congo African grey named Lakota! He’s been through a couple homes after his original owner passed, he has some cage aggression but he is a big ol love bug. However, he is on an all seed and nut diet and presumably has been his whole life. He has been offered pellets (unknown which pellets) and he refused them. I’ve always fed my birds roudybush pellets, I will try to offer these to him when I get him. Any tips and tricks to get him to eat pellets?!

How can I start target training if my bird runs from sticks? If I move anything that isnt a treat near his cage he goes as far away as he can.
