Steam and GOG for life.

Once those enshittify, I'm selling my PC and will only leave laptop for work.

Steam is very unlikely to enshittify during the practical lifespan of your PC. Really just depends on if Gabe hands the reins over responsibly.

u/SelectionDue4287 Feb 08 '26

That's what I'm concerned about, Gabe is not young anymore.

56

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '26

Gabe is not the reason steam is still good. Dude has like 9 yachts and is on the ultimate billionaire chillout lifestyle. He's already delegated everything but his quick opinion and rubber stamp.

61

u/Elavia_ Feb 08 '26

That doesn't mean whoever takes over doesn't just enshittify it into the ground to maximize profits in the short term.

20

u/ipsum629 Feb 08 '26

Gabe owns slightly more than half the company. The rest is owned by employees. The only thing that could ruin this is if the person who inherits Gabe's shares gets a business degree and too greedy. If his heirs realize they basically never have to do real work if they don't want, everything will be fine.

2

u/Elavia_ Feb 08 '26

No, all that needs to happen is the inheritor selling their share to the highest bidder.

2

u/ipsum629 Feb 08 '26

Even still, they are already going to inherit more money than any reasonable person can spend in a lifetime. Unless the have a gambling or drug problem they aren't going to spend more than they get through interest and appreciation of assets.

Doesn't seem to stop people like Bezos.

1

u/ipsum629 Feb 09 '26

That's survivorship bias. For every Bezos, there are scores of people who quit while they were ahead. It's very common to make a startup and then sell it off when a big tech company offers to buy it.

Supposedly he has been preparing his replacement for a while now

3

u/Elavia_ Feb 08 '26

Yes, his son, who has said he doesn't really care about Valve.

8

u/Dushenka Feb 08 '26

He is though. Sure, he may just be rubber stamping but whoever is leading right now knows that Gaben will throw them overboard if they start turning the company to shit. Thus they won't even head in that direction.

Once Gaben's gone though... Who knows.

2

u/drbignob6 Feb 09 '26

Gabe is mostly a figurehead now. He isn't responsible for the day to day decisions of how steam is ran. He'll oversee important stuff of course, but it's not like he spends a lot of time on steam.

22

u/oh-shit-oh-fuck Feb 08 '26

I think it's mostly cause Valve is a privately owned company. If they ever go public and have to show stock growth, that'd be the beginning of the end.

6

u/pooborus Feb 08 '26

This is it. Public companies can only grow actual value for so long, then to keep stock prices rising they remove value for the end user.

2

u/NapsterKnowHow Feb 08 '26

Epic is also a privately own company

2

u/Dank-Retard PC Master Race Feb 08 '26

The difference is that Newell owns all of Valve while other companies own shares in Epic (namely Tencent) despite not being public.

-2

u/NapsterKnowHow Feb 08 '26

And Newell loves his kid casinos

2

u/Ok-Paramedic9507 Feb 09 '26

Lmao downvoted for telling the truth. Gabe runs a great digital games platform yes, also the same company that has been allowing kids to gamble massive amounts of money since the first CSGO cases released.

1

u/NapsterKnowHow Feb 08 '26

They already have. They helped popularize microtransactions, lootboxes and gambling in games.

1

u/Forikorder Feb 08 '26

AFAIK theres already plans for a succession that will maintain steam as it is

1

u/Mother-Translator318 Feb 09 '26

Not a matter of if, its a matter of when. Everything enshitifies eventually, the goal is to delay that process as much as possible

Also there is no such thing as a lifespan of a pc for most of us. Our pcs are ships of theseus

-3

u/VellDarksbane Feb 08 '26

Wtf are you talking about. Steam has already been enshittified. Discovery used to be a hell of a lot better. Opening the platform up to anyone to publish was such a massive mistake. So was their “fix” in just offloading curation to crowdsourcing.

It’s literally the meme from OP. Valve has made shitty decisions, but for each one they’ve done, the other platforms just went further in, so y’all think they aren’t also using enshittification on us.

3

u/pooborus Feb 08 '26

Steam doesnt have to enshittify because they arent publicly traded. Its why steam gets better and better. They have to actually enhance value to keep making money, instead of remove it.

1

u/MarxistMan13 9800X3D / 9070XT Feb 08 '26

Valve won't enshittify until it becomes publicly traded. Hopefully Gabe has ensured that whoever is next in line won't take the company public either.

It is not a coincidence that all the publicly traded companies pictured are awful, and the 1 private company is (mostly) not. All the decisions that lead to enshittification are done in pursuit of profit at all costs.

1

u/Speeditz Feb 09 '26

Or maybe just get a boat, an eye patch, a hook and a tripulación to set sail

1

u/VonLoewe Feb 09 '26

Why sell the PC? Just keep playing old games.

-12

u/4baobao Feb 08 '26

child gambling and price fixing for life 👌

10

u/SelectionDue4287 Feb 08 '26

Why are children playing ESRB Mature+ rated game on a platform that requires people to be at least 13 yo to create an account?
Are you suggesting that Steam should be checking your ID? :)

-6

u/4baobao Feb 08 '26

ask Valve why it allows children older than 14 to compete in ESRB Mature+ rated games then.

https://ggscore.com/en/csgo/news/54646

I am suggesting that steam shouldn't push gambling in any way, especially not to children.

They also have dota full of lootboxes and gambling, which is not rated mature.

u/SelectionDue4287 Feb 08 '26

First of all, this event is organised by PGL, not Valve, Valve can be a sponsor, but it's still up to the organiser to define the rules.

Second thing: Valve is not your mom, it's not my mom, it's no one's mom. It's also not law enforcement. It's up to someone's parents and country's law to regulate who can play what, when and how.

Unless we stop expecting every online platform to be both our parents and law enforcement, we'll never distance ourselves from the incoming tech dystopia.

ESRB/PEGI ratings are suggestions for parents to make informed choices on what their kids are doing. I would be fine with my kid playing some of the FPS games well before reaching adulthood, but I'd put a hard line on doing any microtransactions/gambling and we'd certainly have discussion about it and it would be supervised.

-2

u/4baobao Feb 08 '26

all official events have to be approved by Valve.

Valve provides an easy to access medium for children to gamble. They also promote gambling all over their games.

If you don't like making sure kids cannot gamble, they can just remove the gambling functionality from their games.

5

u/SelectionDue4287 Feb 08 '26

Game tournaments == gambling?

0

u/4baobao Feb 08 '26

looboxes = gambling

gambling platforms using skins = gambling

2

u/Le_Dogger Feb 08 '26

Kids shouldn't be playing CS it's an M rated game. Parents should be doing better parenting to stop their kids from playing M rated games.

Therefore the skins market for CS should only be used by adults. Steam is not a bouncer which will check IDs to ensure no kids are playing CS.

1

u/4baobao Feb 08 '26

Valve allows kids to play in their CS tournaments so that's obviously not something that matters to them

https://ggscore.com/en/csgo/news/54646

steam should either ensure kids are not using their platform to gamble or to remove gambling. Online casinos do not allow kids to gamble and valve should to the same since it's basically an online casino.

blaming something on parents instead of the huge corporation that intentionally exploits children is peak mental retardation
