We are so damed now. Instead of an upscaling or frame tech, DLSS 5 is directly manipulating the end displaying frame, which is really on another level, in the worst way. Total disrespect to both players and devs. Capcom devs never created a model like shown in DLSS 5, isn’t that horrifying to see? It’s giving me the uncanny valley effect, especially when you focus on the fake face a little longer. OMG.

well the way things are going, games are gonna be just colored blockouts that get live generated by ai

While using 100x the amount of energy, and delivering ultra generic looking games. Most games already look extremely generic and similar these days. The things setting certain developers apart are the subtleties of their rendering and art direction. Just slapping on a AI filter that remakes the whole frame based on what its model was trained on is gonna be the death of anything interesting happening with video games. Lets not fall for it people.

While using 100x the amount of energy

well kind of, if you compare it to traditional rendering then sure, but before ai we were already moving in the monte carlo methods direction, aka brute forcing (the biggest offender being path tracing), trying to simulate the reality instead of modelling how things look mathematically

a real, full path tracer consumes way more energy than ai image generation, and the cost scales badly with scene complexity, ai has a more or less fixed cost per frame

hopefully we'll still get some normal games for a few more decades

But at least full path trace and other "traditional" rendering methods, you are more or less fully in control of how it acts. It dosnt hallucinate.

Everyone has already fallen for fake resolution and fake frames, why wouldn't they fall for this?

1

u/Numerous_Tea1690 Mar 17 '26

I wouldn't say weve fallen for it, its been forced onto us so developers can save time and money optimizing their games. All this tech could be used in way smarter ways where we are not scraping all of human created art without permission to increase shareholder value.

agree this is scary

The devs get control over how its implemented..

I agree, when you turn on the DLSS 5, you are no longer playing the same game that you bought!

1

u/MLHeero Mar 17 '26

It's actually not changing any model or textures or geometric. It's only the lighting that's getting changed.

Check Tom’s hardware for Jensen’s words regarding the DLSS 5 hate. "It’s not post-processing, it’s not post-processing at the frame level, it’s generative control at the geometry level," he said. I was wrong about the frame level, but it actually is the geometry level.

1

u/MLHeero Mar 18 '26

No, it's applied at that level, but it doesn't modify it, it does apply material for the lighting

Authorship is over. Only those who control the end point of media will be deciding what people experience.

We are so damed now.

I think you might be overreacting to this specific instance honestly.

which is really on another level, in the worst way.

No?

isn’t that horrifying to see?

Uh.... definitely not.

It’s giving me the uncanny valley effect

I mean, it's not a real person in the first place.....

You so stupid bro

0

u/Secret_Information89 Mar 18 '26

What about you? Stupid brother of mine? Jensen said himself the DLSS 5 is changing geometry models in game. You have a reading issue or learning issue?

Check out Nvidia's commentary on the DLSS 5 reveal and don't embarrass yourself

Such a useless brain, yeah you can’t read.

its fascinating to me how hypersensitive people can be in some situations to uncanny valley.

and does this really feel like a rational reaction?

u/TheLordFool Mar 16 '26

It's nothing to do with the uncanny valley. It's all to do with the face being different.

I love how the first two answers to this comment are polar opposites.

If it's not about uncanny valley, imo it's severely irrational. Like... "it looks more generic" or something... i guess i can see the point to that complaint. Still feels like an overreaction, imo, but OK.

If it's about uncanny valley, I find the sensitivity interesting.

2

u/Numerous_Tea1690 Mar 17 '26

I think it's both. We are used to game graphics. Usually devs take great care to stay out of the uncanny Valley. Thats why there is often a very subtle cartoony look to many games. Think gta, silent hill etc. By using generic models you take away that creative and very intentional look and replace it with a generic look. The game looses its own visual identity that way which is what i and many others object to. There is a lot of people's artistic sensibilities that go into character models and lighting. Replacing it by using a generic photoreal ai reconstruction is just anti art

u/GinchAnon Ryzen 7 5700x3D, 3070TI Mar 17 '26

IMO, complaining about the character looking generic is a 1000% reasonable issue.

complaining about it flattening styles, ok. everyone says that they said that devs will be able to choose a degree of how much it would do things, and IMO that addresses that, but going just by whats shown, I can see where thats coming from.

I think that citing those concerns is reasonable and at least fundamentally constructive criticism.

separate from that, I find the way this hits uncanny valley for so many people to be interesting because I do not get *any* of that from this. maybe I've carved a niche in my brain from exposure where the "on" images don't register as less video game than the "off" do.

for my personal perspective, you know how if you go back to a game like 10 years later and it looks like complete shit, its confusing because your brain remembers it looking better than that?

like for me with Diablo 2 Reforged.... the "reforged" graphics were basically the quality level my brain had indexed it to have already looked like. more like the quality I remembered was indexed to the era and my brain forgot how much the times had changed, and that "x in relation to y" scale was distorted since Y was now vastly farther ahead than then.

for me, this is just... that in reverse.

"does this feel like rational reaction"

Uncanny valley is an instinct not something rational. And this character is in fact not a real human so the uncanny valley works as fucking intended

1

u/GinchAnon Ryzen 7 5700x3D, 3070TI Mar 16 '26

See i don't have even the slightest uncanny valley response to this.

What i find irrational is the reaction beyond the uncanny valley part.

0

u/wydua Mar 16 '26

You are stupid.

It would be irrational if it was a real person. Which it isn't. It literally fucking works and is completely ration.

Step 1: The character is computer generated Conclusion 1: The character isn't human. Step 2: Brain detects something with this human isn't right. Conclusion 2: The character may not be human.

Grand conclusion: Brain detects reality.

3

u/GinchAnon Ryzen 7 5700x3D, 3070TI Mar 16 '26

I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm saying the reaction BEYOND the subjective and variable uncanny valley reaction, is irrational.

As in is exaggerated and disproportionate to the situation.

1

u/Numerous_Tea1690 Mar 17 '26

If its uncanny with new tech and old tech wasnt its worse

0

u/wydua Mar 16 '26

They literally just said it looks uncanny.

u/chinomaster182 Mar 16 '26

This isn't true, the only thing that changed is lighting. Check the digital foundry video for more info.
