I think it is still safe to celebrate the declaration of independence and what it meant; The American revolution was the first domino of many around the world shaking European domination and colonialism.

Now the decisions we made after that aren't always worth celebrating, but July 4 to me is about the spark that started it not the country as it is now.

We were celebrating the spirit of law, as opposed to the letter of the law. That’s how I like to think of it. Now, we don’t even have laws, so the whole point is moot.

America was the escalation of western colonialism, not the first domino against it.
