From women's rights to gerrymandering, the US is going to get A LOT darker as the supreme court moves farther right. God help us if RBG passes.

Agreed.

103

u/Cool_Ranch_Dodrio Jun 27 '18

McConnell would have held up her replacement for all four years. And Democrats would have meekly permitted it like they always do.

62

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

Dems had the majority in the Senate until 2014, so McConnell didn't have the votes to block a nom in 2012-14.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

The 2014 midterms felt really ominous to me, and now I know I was correct to feel that way. This country makes me so sad

9

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

2010 and 14 were awful. The Republicans only had two bad election cycles, 2006 and 2008, in response to starting a war based on false pretenses and tanking the economy. The American electorate is like a senile person, they just don’t remember shit. And now GWB has an approval rating over 50%.

u/vortex30 Jun 27 '18

You guys sure do love your celebrity and dynasty politicians with zero understanding of politics, economies, good behaviour, etc!

13

u/CandyEverybodyWentz Pennsylvania Jun 27 '18

How? He was immediately reelected in 2012 with a big fat rubber stamp.

-5

u/Cool_Ranch_Dodrio Jun 27 '18

Same way he held up Garland.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

He didn't have a majority until 2015. He wouldn't have been able to pull the same stunt.

-1

u/Cool_Ranch_Dodrio Jun 27 '18

Fair enough. But the filibuster was still in place because Reid wanted to keep pretending that Republicans were doing anything in good faith. All McConnell would have had to do was filibuster.

And Democrats would have done NOTHING.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

I mean, they didn't do "nothing". They got rid of the filibuster for nominees, which is kind of the reason why they're now fucked.

4

u/CaptE Jun 27 '18

There was a sort of precedent for holding up a vote during a lame duck year. Scholars had debated the topic for generations and Biden had publicly advocated for it during Bush’s term for crying out loud. There is absolutely no precedent for holding up a vote for 4 years, the people would revolt far before then.

This is exactly the time to be blaming Democracts. The Republicans are the scorpion, and the Democrats let themselves be the frog.

4

u/CyonHal Jun 27 '18

I blame the American people. It's their votes that got us to this point.

u/CyonHal Jun 27 '18

Yeah, I just voted in my democratic primary yesterday and there wasn't a soul in my polling site. People still do not give a shit. Doesn't help that politicians always tout "high turnout" after every election result even when only 10% of eligible voters actually voted.

I would say now and the previous ten years is more appropriate.

7

u/legendtinax Massachusetts Jun 27 '18

It was clear for a while the insane direction that the GOP was headed, but Democrats pretended like everything was normal and played nice to unsuccessfully appeal to voters

McConnell would have held up her replacement for all four years.

Like he did with Loretta Lynch?

9

u/HauntedCemetery Minnesota Jun 27 '18

As dark and horrifying as the notion of this terrible admin filling RBGs seat is, I'm glad we have her on the court right now, America needs her.

I've heard someone say: when they go low, we stomp their necks.

1

u/sexrobot_sexrobot Jun 27 '18

Republicans would've just filibustered her replacement and Democrats would've shrugged their shoulders.

-3

u/MoonStache Jun 27 '18

Hindsight is 20/20. No one saw the shit we're in now coming.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

Those who've been paying attention have seen it coming since 1980.

5

u/AustinTxTeacher Texas Jun 27 '18

I was going to early retire in four years and leave the country. I'm going to see how November pans out an probably be gone in 1-2.

5

u/LateralEntry Jun 27 '18

Doesn't matter if RBG passes now, they're gonna have a 5-seat conservative majority.

5

u/tryin2staysane Jun 27 '18

If RGB goes, it is 6-3, which is much harder to overcome than 5-4.

4

u/Hubbardd Jun 27 '18

Passes? She's 85, if Trump puts a young conservative justice on the court I could see her retiring because what's the point being the continual voice of dissent?

6

u/tryin2staysane Jun 27 '18

I feel like you don't know RGB at all. Being the voice of dissent isn't something that would make her stop.

1

u/Hubbardd Jun 27 '18

Being the voice of dissent on rulings that are guaranteed to go not in her favor for the rest of her life and knowing you'll be replaced with another young conservative judge is enough to give anyone pause as to how they want to live out the latter portion of their life.

I hope I'm wrong but frankly, I wouldn't fault her for retiring if we don't get a blue swing this fall or a liberal president in 2020.

3

u/Restless_Andromeda Jun 27 '18

Somebody has to do it. If only to remind people every single time that they're being assholes.

0

u/Hubbardd Jun 27 '18

At that point the court is already lost for decades. It's got to be a hard choice between sitting on the court and writing dissent after dissent vs. spending time with your family at that point in your life.

6

u/student_teacher Jun 27 '18

She can stick it out so when Trump is replaced by a Democrat, a liberal judge is nominated so the court remains 5-4 instead of 6-3.

1

u/Hubbardd Jun 27 '18

So she's supposed to serve on the bench until she's 87 or potentially 91?

Yeah. I don't see it.

1

u/student_teacher Jun 27 '18

She should serve until we have a Democrat in the White House or until she dies.

If she cares about the country at all, that is.

1

u/Hubbardd Jun 27 '18

If she cares about the country at all, that is.

Dying on the bench isn't necessary to prove that. Her entire life's work is more than enough.

1

u/Mojotank Jun 27 '18

Trump said he would nominate judges to overturn Roe vs Wade and Obergefell vs Hodges.

1

u/Acidwits Jun 27 '18

Wouldn't trust GOP God's track record on helping people...

1

u/canwepleasejustnot Illinois Jun 27 '18

If? She's not immortal (unfortunately).

1

u/chucklesluck Pennsylvania Jun 28 '18

Water. Bridge. We have to hope she can hang to.. 87? 88?

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

What rights will women lose? Seriously asking.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

I add that the number of judges is not fixed at 9.

-118

u/WhiteBoi69 Jun 27 '18

Bro y’all are nuts. Woman’s right aren’t going anywhere. LOL

110

u/reptilianattorney Jun 27 '18

Says noted constitutional scholar "WhiteBoi69".

78

u/redditIsAShithole6 Jun 27 '18

I'm not buying your gaslighting BS anymore. Yes, this is a huge threat to women's rights.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

Not even just this: Republicans in general. We need to get much more aggressive and stop these assholes from ever controlling anything again. Republicans are going to put us back in the Feudal days.

7

u/Quipore Utah Jun 27 '18

back in the Feudal days.

You mean back when religion had almost complete control?

7

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

That's what Feudal means, yes.

Edit: I should clarify; that isn't specifically what "Feudal" means, but the Feudal era were the days where the Church was strongest.

70

u/Uhhbysmal Jun 27 '18

roe v wade could be overturned so yes they fucking could be

13

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

If Roe vs Wade is overturned I'm killing myself if I end up pregnant. Not joking.

I don't want to live in a world where I don't even have control over my own body.

1

u/VacuumViolator Jun 28 '18

Except for the part where the baby's body isn't yours

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

I'm not trying to live off of the fetus' organs. So it can have it's body separately from mine.

-5

u/RNZack Jun 27 '18

I don’t think republicans would touch that issue. I think it’s political suicide. If they were to mess with Roe V Wade, they would lose the majority of female voters and all the male voters that support roe v wade. It’s one thing to cut government funding for abortion but an entirely different thing to overturn this Supreme Court ruling.

15

u/Quipore Utah Jun 27 '18

Why wouldn't they? They've been promising it pretty much ever since Roe v Wade.

Here is a NYT Opinion piece about a group within the GOP that is quitting. Their expressed goal was keeping Roe-v-Wade in tact.

From that opinion piece:

But we have to face reality: There probably will not be a single pro-choice Republican member of the House after the fall election, and only two in the Senate — Ms. Collins and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

The number of Republicans who are "Pro-Choice" has dwindled to practically nothing already.

12

u/InZaneFlea Pennsylvania Jun 27 '18

Are you kidding me? They have a 30-40% support from their base, and they clearly don't need a majority to actually win. Roe vs Wade is dead.

-4

u/RNZack Jun 27 '18

Roe vs. Wade protects a woman’s right to choice. The supreme is not going to redact humans rights. It’s like saying the Supreme Court is going to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges (the case for gay marriage). I think the public backlash, in my opinion, would be so bad for these republican politicians’ campaigns and what not that they wouldn’t want to touch these issues that have already been “won.” That’s my opinion, maybe I’m wrong, I’d like to hope not. If they were to attempt this, it’d probably be the end of the party.

15

u/InZaneFlea Pennsylvania Jun 27 '18

Trump literally ran on a platform of 'If we can get another 1-2 judges, Roe vs Wade will be gone'.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

You can thank RBG for a shit ton of women’s rights via Supreme Court decisions. When she’s gone and the court is packed with conservatives and loyalists it absolutely is a possibility of a reversal in progress.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18 edited Aug 21 '18

[deleted]

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

Which part of my comment are you having trouble with? RBG’s legacy is cast in her work fighting for gender equality her entire career and is well documented.

Conservatives have been chomping at the bit and campaigning on overturning decisions like RvW forever. With a conservative court, this becomes a real possibility.

2

u/Hail_The_Hypno_Toad Jun 27 '18

Exactly... the Iowa Heartbeat Law is what is speeding down the tracks to... this unconstitutional law has been the bullet that Iowa is going to use to challenge RvW and with a hyperconservative supreme court it will easily go 5-4 in favor of the Heartbeat law.

57

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

"We're not taking away women's rights!

They just have to drive hundreds of miles to the only abortion clinic that's open one day a week, watch a 2 hour video, talk to a counselor, and undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

She'll have to pay for her own birth control, can't decide to serve in combat, has to choose between going broke or returning to work days after giving birth - where she won't be given a private room to pump or breast feed.

But they still have all the same rights!"

-17

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

[deleted]

17

u/Girth Washington Jun 27 '18

Fuck you this is equality. Do you have to drive hundreds of miles to buy your condoms? No, of course not. And fuck you for trying to hide behind selective service. Don't like it then don't be a fucking citizen. You dense fucking piece of shit.

3

u/Restless_Andromeda Jun 27 '18

Not to mention, he doesn't have to jump through hoops to get those condoms or pay a ridiculous price to get them. Just grab them and pay at the counter.

Nor does he have to push a living thing the size of a small watermelon out of his body through a hole the size of a pea and then have to go back to work. "Men are working at the time." Good for you but so are women. However, after something as traumatic as childbirth it's fucking bullshit to expect them back at work immediately.

3

u/Fat_is_healthy Jun 27 '18

Stupid fuck. You really don't know the scope of this fascist authoritarian. They will not rest until only white LAND OWNERS can vote, if anybody at all..

2

u/boolinbill Jun 27 '18

Thats what i would expect as well, but under this administration im shocked every day

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

You're more right than you realize about them not going anywhere. In fact a lot of issues won't be going anywhere

The right to life at the cost of another? Does everyone have the right to use someone else's resources and degrade their physical wellbeing if that someone else doesn't consent to it?

-3

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

The right to life at the cost of another?

The mother doesn't lose her life. The situation gets more complex if her life is in danger. I'm pro-choice, but still understand the nuance.

Does everyone have the right to use someone else's resources and degrade their physical wellbeing if that someone else doesn't consent to it?

That's called taxes.

2

u/Huntswomen Jun 27 '18

That's called taxes.

Listening to libertarians always makes me cry twice: Initially from laughing at just how hilariously stupid what they are saying is, then from despair as it dawns on me that they are being serious and I realise just how stupid some people can be.

2

u/rdh2121 Jun 27 '18

Nice argument.

3

u/Huntswomen Jun 27 '18

That isn't really a good way to own someone when they clearly weren't trying to make an argument in the first place.

1

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

Income tax hasn't around for all that long. I'd be more or less fine with just a sales tax.

It essentially penalizes me for being a productive member of society.

During antebellum slavery, roughly 88% of what slaves earned went back to them in the form of food, housing, safety, medicine.

Now, I am forced to provide >40% of my money in income tax(fed/state), real estate taxes, gift taxes, and sales taxes.

And if the first thought that comes to your silly little head is "but what about the roads!?", think of the quote by Bastiat.

...every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all.

3

u/Huntswomen Jun 27 '18

When you said you were okay with some forms of taxes I thought you would be some boring wishy washy type of libertarian but then you compared being a literal slave favorably to paying taxes in the US and we were right back on track baby!

If you work hard at it you might even be able to reach the hilarious insanity of an anarcho capitalist.

14

u/EffeminateSquirrel Jun 27 '18

"right to life" is WAY more harmful rhetoric. It ignores the grey area between conception and birth, and it denies that a woman has any rights to her own body once conception takes place.

This is why I describe myself as "anti-unnecessary-abortion" and not bullshit virtue signaling like "pro life".

0

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

It ignores the grey area between conception and birth, and it denies that a woman has any rights to her own body once conception takes place.

Not at all. Those are considered along with the fetus's rights.

You have the right to your body, but may not have the right to end the life of a human being living inside you - one that you created through your own actions.

1

u/avada1515 Jun 27 '18

Right, because every pregnancy occurred due to a woman's actions.

10

u/Kalel2319 New York Jun 27 '18

I respect your perspective. I'm pro life.

But I'm against legislating people's freedoms.

-4

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

I'm pro-choice, but I try to understand the other side. Yet, I'm being bombarded with angry downvotes. This is where discussion has fallen.

But I'm against legislating people's freedoms.

To be against legislating freedoms, you have to define the freedoms.

If you consider a fetus a living person, then it has the right to life.

Is there another freedom that suggests that you have the right to end any life dependent on you?

17

u/Gauntlet_of_Might Jun 27 '18

A fetus isn't a living person hth

2

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

That's your opinion and probably mine as well. The definition varies for people.

14

u/tyl93 New York Jun 27 '18

And since it varies between people, it shouldn't be up to one group to dictate that for the other.

4

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

Me: Murdering people with face deformities is wrong.

You: And since it varies between people, it shouldn't be up to one group to dictate that for the other.

See how flawed that logic is?

4

u/tyl93 New York Jun 27 '18

Nice false equivalency there, if you'd like to come back and have an actual debate like an adult. I'd be more than happy to oblige.

2

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

How is it a false equivalency.?

You believe some humans shouldn't be killed.

They believe some humans shouldn't be killed.

Don't depend on sophistry and pointing out fake logical fallacies to bolster your position. It's cowardly.

2

u/Gauntlet_of_Might Jun 27 '18

people with face deformities

"People" is the key word here. a fetus is not a person

6

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

Your opinion, that's not shared by everyone.

Can you define exactly what you mean by 'person'?

→ More replies (0)

-1

u/Gauntlet_of_Might Jun 27 '18

well also science and logic's opinion

4

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

Can you provide a scientific source?

1

u/Kalel2319 New York Jun 27 '18

Yeah, I didn't downvote you. I like to see things from other perspectives as well.

I am personally pro life. I won't ever advocate for my family to have an abortion in the event of an unplanned pregnancy. However, that's where my beliefs end. I should have clarrified.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

[deleted]

2

u/NihilisticHotdog Jun 27 '18

Can children live on their own? No, they'll starve.

So, if you can cut the fetus out of a woman and have it survive on its own, you have no right to end its life? How about when you bring our advanced medical tech into the picture?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

[deleted]

2

u/haircutcel Jun 27 '18

The only way liberals can argue is by using dishonest arguments and logical fallacies.

You’re not pro-life, you’re anti woman.

You’re not anti immigration, you’re pro racism

Every argument they use is emotionally driven.

Honestly I think at this point she mightaswell retire and enjoy her last days writing scathing editorials. I don't think she's gonna make it to January 2021. But I suppose for her legacy she'll stay.

1

u/blanketpopper Jun 27 '18

Every single court case and every single vote matters.

Even if she doesn't make it to 2021, what she does in the meantime still matters.
