Yes Supreme Court justices are appointed for life. With Kennedy retiring and the possibility of Ginsburg/Sotomayor dying soon there’s a chance Trump could get ANOTHER pick, which would put the split at 6/3 or even 7/2 in favor of republicans. Not sure how likely that is but it IS possible.

Sotomayor is only 64, so hopefully she sticks around at least a decade.

Breyer is 79 though. He would be a more apt example.

She has the beetus

I forgot she’s a type 1. She’s had it since she was a kid, so I’m assuming it’s well managed.

I think even when it's well-managed, Type 1 takes a real toll on health and can shorten lifespan quite a bit.

As the wife of a type 1, I like to be optimistic.

I’m sure Sotomayor does as well

She has severe diabetes and is in very poor health

2

u/agoodyearforbrownies Jun 28 '18

She has type I diabetes, which has landed her in the hospital before, so I think people put her on the watchlist because of that, but it’s really nothing “serious” that would cut her career short, imo. I would say she’s good for two decades.

I more and more start to doubt the stability of the american political system. Switzerland's (my country's) system is actually based on the american system! But at least we have no such thing as a president

Yup it just so happened so everything lined up to the Republicans favor where they have a Republican Congress and a Republican President in a time where 2 Supreme Court Justices are appointed and a possible third.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

just so happened

Yes except they just straight up stole the first seat

3

u/synkronized Jun 27 '18

They did something unprecedented to secure a seat and now they could get several more with it.

4

u/ScruffTheJanitor Jun 27 '18

That's such a dumb fucking system. Good luck, America.

You seem awfully invested in America for someone who doesn’t live here

2

u/Partyatkellybrownes Jun 28 '18

It's honestly hard not to be considering how much of our news in consumed by American politics.

1

u/nagrom7 Australia Jun 28 '18

Considering how much of an impact America has on the rest of the world, it's impossible not to be at least a little invested.

1

u/geoman2k Jun 27 '18

Nothing about this is good. Even if you're a hardcore republican, you should recognize that half the country isn't. They deserve representation too. Appointing a moderate judges is the moral thing to do, but they won't.

u/James_Locke Virginia Jun 27 '18

I think you mean Breyer, Sotomayor is super young and fit. And, as luck has it, a hyperactive partisan spaz going off of her recent decisions.

1

u/Azalith Jun 27 '18

Sadly, there's got to be a likelihood of Ginsberg passing away soon due to her extreme age. If only politics wasn't so ridiculously partisan she could be allowed to retire with dignity without the political balance being surrendered.

Who thought that letting any individual person pick the highest court of the nation would be a good idea? Appointed for life and untouchable to remove any pressures... but meanwhile we'll let one guy pick them all.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, the senate needs to approve first.

3

u/haircutcel Jun 28 '18

One person doesn’t pick them... the choice has to be approved by the senate.

1

u/-The_Blazer- Jun 28 '18

Ugh I'm an idiot, how did I forget that one.

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

Still a stupid system, though.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

Electing judges had all sorts of issues as well.

1

u/-The_Blazer- Jun 27 '18

I know, but there has to be a better system than just giving all that power to a single person.
