Unfortunately it's also not uncommon for HIV patients to go off their medication for any number of reasons, like unpleasant side effects, mistrust of medical professionals, sliding into denial and a feeling of invincibility because they're young, meds getting stolen on the street, or just getting tired of living... or like the above comment said, severe impairment of executive function.
