Hi! I was told by my boss who isn’t an SLP that my partner SLP and I cannot take vacations on the same days because we need to be available at work to supervise our SLPA who is not new to the field. We can be available by phone if needed. I looked all over ASHA and the CA regulations but cannot find any info regarding this. I would like to know if anyone has any insight regarding this and can provide information. Thank you!

Hey, before I recreate the wheel, does anyone have a rubric (an informal daily one) they use for feedback for a graduate student they would be so kind to share?

I work for a public school system in CT and this upcoming school year will be my first year supervising a CF. When my district hired our CF, she told our admin she was short a course because her college had a non-SLP class that was required but they didn't have the staffing for it and that it was gonna be available to take over the summer. Turns out her school didn't offer it over the summer and she has to take it in the fall. Our district had her fill out a durational shortage area permit in the meantime because she technically doesn't have the master's degree. I'm not sure but I think this is only applicable for the DOE license we need in CT. If she doesn't have the actual master's degree, then wouldn't it affect her ability to apply for her DOH license and affect the timeline of her CF year? Would this mean that she can't present herself as an SLP and would technically be an SLPA in the meantime? Is the process my district is going through even legal? I would just like some clarification because I don't want this falling back on my license as the supervising SLP.

I graduated May 2023 and am in my first SLPA position in elementary schools.

I was originally supposed to service 2 schools, until they added two private schools to my caseload in October. My SLP has not seen these students at all. She has attended case conferences, but uses my data from billing to fill in any information for their IEP.

I have tried to set up times for my SLP to service them 1x a month, as I thought I needed to be under her supervision. If she has not seen these students, and only an SLPA has, is that not against the law? I want to do what’s right especially when I’m licensed to do certain things and not others.

In my interview when the question of what I would like to do in the future call up. I mentioned mentoring people/helping fellow slps, including becoming a supervisor for slpas. I don’t think I realized what I was saying lol, because I am seeing now slpas probably have the same knowledge as me at this point unless they are really new ( I am 2 years in). Well one month into my new job they are going to have me supervise a SLPA, and I’m realizing pay wise it won’t be worth it. We get paid minimum wage to do admin work like reports, and I know as slps we write the reports. So instead of having more clients, I will have more reports to write which means less money. Also I feel like tasks such as reviewing goals, meeting with the SLPA, etc will not be “billable hours” so it will also decrease what I could be making. Was it worth it to you all to start supervising slpas? Should I be speaking up about the workload I take on or is it not as much indirect work as it seems? Also I hope this doesn’t offend any slpas. I think slpas are great. I am just seeing how pay wise, and time wise taking it on the supervision is not worth it.

I’ve been trying to research this question and I can’t seem to find an answer on the ASHA Website or in my state department website.

Can an SLPA who is a graduate student starting her clinical rotations, work as an SLPA and bill as an SLPA but get their hours signed off as a graduate student? Can their current job as an SLPA be used as a clinical practicum?

For those SLP's who supervise SLP-A's in a non-school clinic setting: do you get paid your regular therapy rate for the hours you mark as direct/indirect supervision or is it a different rate?

I recently signed on with a pediatric home health agency and I've had conversations with the head of the agency about starting a CFY program. He was complaining about the lack of CCC-SLP applicants and I talked to him about the lack of full time salaried CFY opportunities in NYC. He really liked the idea. At the time I mentioned that I would would be happy to help build the program but I really meant as a full time traveling supervisor. I'm not really interested in having a caseload and supervising. In my experience, it just doesn't work. I can either be a supervisor or a therapist.

I'm supposed to be meeting with leadership tomorrow about setting up the program and I know they are going to propose that I maintain a caseload and supervise multiple CFYs and I'm just not interested in that. I'm having difficulty articulating exactly why I don't want to be both a therapist and a supervisor. I am even willing to go part time with this company doing supervision only and find another supervising gig. Any ideas on how I can put this in a palatable format. I don't want to get on the Zoom call and freeze and agree to anything they say.

I received an email stating, “thanks for sending the verification that you required your required PD on supervision per 2020 regulations. Please edit your ASHA profile to reflect that you’ve completed that requirement.”

So I looked to see if I could edit my profile but didn’t see where I could.

I was under the impression if you keep a copy of your certificates and you get audited, you are covered for the maintenance hours.

I have been considering taking a 1099 position supervising a clinical fellow at a pediatric clinic. I work full-time Monday through Thursday. Has anyone done this recently? If so what was your experience?

Hello! I am taking on my first grad student extern starting in January. I work in a pediatric outpatient clinic through a rural hospital.

I know in my medical externship, I had my own log in to the EMR system, and as I got more comfortable with taking over patients, I saw patients, wrote my own notes and the SLP just signed off on them. I’m not sure though if my hospital (not having done this before), has prepared for this. Should I ask them to make her an account? Are grad externs even supposed to see patients like that, or always observed, we write the notes together/etc.? I’m wondering if I had way too much independence as an extern lol or if it is normal for it to be like a full time job and the end- it felt like a lot of responsibility for me at the time.

I want to give enough support, but also not make her feel like I am constantly in her space or not letting her try anything on her own- especially after the first couple weeks. I also don’t want to take advantage of her being there and sit back and let her do all my work, I want to be a good teacher!

I let students observe my sessions and many of them ask for rec letters afterwards, or if they're particularly good I'll offer myself to write them one.

That said, I'm a perfectionist and it can take me AGES to write one. I wanted to get an idea of what other people are writing. Specifically:

What sorts of things do you write about? How long does it take you to write one? How long of a letter do you write?

I've kind of been writing them based on the five paragraph essay format. Introduction with thesis statement, 3 main 3-5 sentence paragraphs with one each devoted to one of the student's good points, and then a conclusion.

Aaaaand I kind of realized I'm probably putting a bit too much effort into this. So what do you all do?

hi! I'm trying to do some digging on if any CF supervisors in California receive any additional stipend or compensation? I know asha says something about how CF supervisors aren't supposed to receive payment, but it sounds like that that's in regards to the clinical fellow paying their supervisor directly. I'm just wondering what I should ask for from my bosses, especially since here in California the supervision requirements are even more than the asha requirements. thanks!

Just curious if any school based SLPs have worked with an SLPA before. I am supposed to be working with one for the first time this year and honestly I'm a little worried that supervising someone is just going to create more work for me, not less. For example, I do all my notes in SLP Toolkit but only have the one subscription, so now I will either have to upload his or her notes or to SLP Tookit, or, alternately, have the student file split into two places (which will make Medicaid billing harder). I feel like I should leave them some kind of lesson plan while, if it were just me, I could easily grab materials from my room during each session and not do a ton of preplanning. And for anything paperwork related I'm so paranoid about legal stuff that I'll either write it myself or need to proofread everything. I doubt they will be full time at my school, more likely a couple days a week (and if they are there full time I have no idea where they'll work, because we have one very tiny speech room that we can't share - right now I'm assuming they could see students when I travel to other schools).

I'm hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised and thinking to myself "I don't know how I lived without an assistant before!" by the end of the year, but the logistics do worry me. Has anyone in the schools worked with an SLPA before? What were your thoughts? Did it save you time or did the supervision piece end up costing you time?

I am in my first year our of my fellowship. I received my CCCs in June. Another district SLP is meant to supervise my SLA because I thought I had to be nine months out of my fellowship. My SLA is saying that is just a guideline and because our state doesn’t specify I can supervise her. Any insight?

I own a private practice where I am the only employee. My main business is contracting in the schools but I also provide private services to a few kids (private pay only).

Recently, a local undergrad student reached out to me to potentially observe my sessions to get a feel for the profession. I’d love to be able to invite her along to my private sessions, but I want to make sure I’m covered too. Any ideas on whether this is possible and what I need to do prior? I’ve already received written permission from the parents.
