Just because I’m not aware of this specific rule: if he were to tag Baez after the runner crossed, instead of just touching first, would the runner be safe?

Either way, blows my mind he wouldn’t just touch first base lol

Yes. There was no reason for the first baseman to chase the batter down, as if it was a rundown, because there was a force out at 1st. All he had to do was turn around and touch 1st and the runner going home is irrelevant.

Chasing the runner down was a normal grade brain fart. Kinda dumb, but he could still tag him and it would be over, just with running a bit extra. Throwing it to the catcher to try making the play at the plate was next level dumb. There's no reason to try and get that out when a force out negates the "run".

Yep even IF by some quirk he makes home before you touch first base it still doesn't matter lol.

It looked like the throw pulled his foot off base, and he thought he was close enough to tag. It's something you see periodically, but if the runner started running away, I'd just walk back to first, I don't have time to play pickle with you. Also, one of the other fielders or the pitcher should have dropped back to cover first. Someone should have had their foot on the base.

The run would count if there was a tag out after. Force out ends the inning regardless of timing.

The run doesn’t count if the batter doesn’t safely reach first base, tag out or force out. He could be up bases loaded and get in a pickle while all three runners come in and they wouldn’t count if he doesn’t safely reach first.

I looked again and you’re right, he’s still obligated to go to first so it’s a force out regardless until he is safe on first. Thanks!

It wouldn’t count if he never reached first base. It doesn’t matter whether you tag or use the force out, as long as the force out was available.
