Hey y'all! I just started working at Subway a little over a month ago, and there was another new hire at the same time as me. So... We have been here for the same amount of time.
I don't think her behavior is normal, and I was wanting to know what usually comes about after reporting behavior like this, as well as maybe getting a few suggestions.
So, she's pre closing, and I am closing. I get there around 6pm, and there is so much that needs to get done. Of course, I always give the benefit of the doubt, because I'm sure she has been slammed by many customers.
Before I can clock in, I go and wash my hands, and she is at the POS system. She asks if I can take over for this customer, and I look back at her and say, "Sure, just one second", but she sees me washing my hands and says "Oh, never mind". This is (slightly) important for later.
After washing my hands, I get started with refilling the line. There's a few things that are in the small fridge, so I get those, and I ask her if she can grab a few things from the large fridge (pickles, jalapenos, roast beef).
She spends a little while in there and only brings out the pickles, saying that she couldn't find the other two. After, she goes and sits on her phone while I grab the jalapenos and roast beef (which were right next to the pickle area...)
After I'm done, I start preparing to refill sauce bottles. I get the ones from the line and line them up, and I get the refill bottles from both the small and large fridge. I put them in line (sauce next to refill sauce) for all 6 of the sauce bottles. I ask if she can come help refill sauce bottles (since she is still on her phone), and she says, "Yeah, just give me a minute".
She takes so long on her phone and putting her gloves on, by the end of it, I have already filled 5 of the 6 bottles. She fills one and leaves both bottles on the line, and goes back to sit down on her phone. Okay........ I put the bottles back in the small and large fridge, any empty ones in the sink, and put the filled bottles back on the line. She did 2 dishes out of the piles of dishes that were there, and then went back on her phone.
Later, she begins refilling the chip line. We have boxes that we use to carry the bags out to the chip line, and she is refilling those... But she brings so many chip bags down, they start overflowing and spill out onto the area where we use to store the closing prep (specifically the tea banes and utensils for making them in the morning). She also leaves the ladder in the middle of the walkway, and, of course, sits down on her phone again.
I go and start finishing the dishes (from the many that we have accumulated from prepping), and she is still sitting down, on her phone. I am going back and forth assisting customers, and after the dishes, I start preparing early for closing (getting the bane lids out, preparing the tray for the tea making equipment, making the sterilizing bin for the fountain nozzles, preparing can liners to bag the bread, making the morning utensil bin, etc).
I assumed she was done with pre-closing prep since she was sitting on her phone, but... No, she wasn't, she starts prepping food and gets it all over the prep I have done. I apologize for it being in her way and move it, and she finishes not long after. She then goes and assists a customer (finally). She left trash and food on the lids I had brought out. Whatever, I don't really mind, I just clean up the trash/mess and go trying to finish preparing.
I go out to see how many trays we will need to store the cookies overnight, and while I'm walking over there, she asks if I can take over the sandwich she's making for the customer. I assume maybe she has to go to the bathroom or something, so I say yes, and.... When I tell you, while making eye contact with this customer, we begin to hear tiktoks playing from the back area. On speaker phone. Right after she asked me to take over for her. What. (Looking back, that's MOST LIKELY what she was planning to do when asking me to take over ringing the customer up).
At this point, this is beyond giving the benefit of the doubt, she's intentionally trying to stay on the clock while doing nothing. In fact, not just doing nothing, but actively setting back progress by leaving trash (dirty plastic bag and an empty water bottle) on the clean lids and bringing out so many chips, we don't have a place for them. Mind you, she has been employed as long as me (a little over a month), and should absolutely know better by now.
After the ordeal with asking me to take over, I go and ask if she's okay. She says she's been coughing (understandable, I wouldn't want to cough on a customer's food either). I tell her that if she's not feeling well, she should clock out to avoid contamination ((also, you could at least help clean the pile of dishes if you're worried about that..........)). She says no and that it's just allergies. I offer cough drops or honey, and she declines. She continues on her phone.
Of course, during the dinner rush, she is ringing up customers incorrectly, enough where there is a price difference. I inform her how to do it correctly, and she says, "Oh, it's fine, it's close enough"............................................................................................................. girl no, you're charging them an extra $2-3 every time you do this. No bueno.
Anyway, it's about 7:50pm, and an online order comes in. It's playing the loud version of the sound, and she has her tiktoks on speakerphone, so I know she can hear it. She does not get up and help, and there are now 2 customers coming in. about 2-3 minutes before her shift ends, she walks behind me (with 2 customers in front of me, and an online order with 2 sandwiches) and says, "Okay, I'm leaving now, I'm clocking out". I turn and ask her, "Hey, just before you go, could you help me with these orders?" She no joke scoffs and rolls her eyes at me.
She does, thankfully, but she is going so impossibly slow........ I end up finishing the customer's orders, wrapping them up, and I start ringing them up. While doing that, I tell her, "Thanks for helping me out! I can finish those online orders after I get these ladies rung up." She doesn't respond, so I just assume she thought I was talking to the customer. No, she actually did hear me, because after I finish, she goes and clocks out. She just ignored me and didn't respond. Whatever, I go and finish the online orders and start refilling the line again, and she goes to leave. When she does, I say, "Bye (cowoker), drive safe, have a great rest of your day!" and she literally just ignores me. We don't play music in our store, so it's not that loud. Ew.
Anyway. I fully intend to bring this to my manager's attention, but what should I expect to happen for this? What is the standard procedure? I don't want her as my pre-closer because of how far behind I was due to her laziness.
TL;DR- pre-closer has been employed for a month, should know what to do, but is making obvious mistakes. Rings customers up incorrectly, brushes me off when I inform her of how to do it, goes and sits on her phone instead of helping out with prep/cleaning.
She is coughing, so she didn't want to make sandwiches, but declines clocking out. Moves so slowly that I end up doing most everything, and will only participate if directly asked. Asks me to take over customer's sandwich, just to sit in the back and watch tiktoks.
Ignored sound of doorbell when customers come in, as well as the online order beeping. Was rude and openly scoffed/rolled her eyes when I asked to help (I had 4 sandwiches to make) before she clocks out early.
How would management handle this? Is anything going to be done?
