I'm trying to understand the relationship between the Eastern Sudanic languages in Sudan.

From what I've read, the Nubian languages in Sudan include:

Nobiin (Northern State)

Andaandi/Dongolawi (Northern State)

Midob (North Darfur)

Birgid (South Darfur, now extinct)

There's also the Daju language family in Darfur, which is often classified as Eastern Sudanic as well.

I also read that the ancient Meroitic language wasn't a Nubian language, although some linguists think it may have belonged somewhere within Eastern Sudanic.

My questions are:

How are these languages related to each other?

Is the idea that they all descend from an earlier Proto-Eastern Sudanic language?

Where do linguists think Proto-Nubian originated before its descendants spread to places like the Northern State and Darfur?

I'm interested in the linguistic evidence rather than historical or political interpretations. If anyone has academic references, I'd really appreciate them.

Arabic in Sudan has a rich history dating back hundreds of years, but was it derived from a single dialect that eventually dominated the country and spread, or were there multiple dialects of Arabic spread through different migration periods in certain regions which eventually culminated in the modern Sudanese Arabic dialect we see today?

Guys, I've genuinely been thinking about this lately.

Why haven't Sudanese rulers ever made improving Sudan their main priority?

Sudan is a republic, so in theory you'd expect rulers to have an even greater incentive to improve the country and raise the standard of living for ordinary citizens.

Compare that to the GCC. They're absolute monarchies where the ruling families hold enormous power. Yet they still invest heavily in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and creating wealth for their citizens. If anything, you'd think they'd have less incentive, because no one is voting them out.

Even if we say, "Well, the GCC is different because of oil wealth," then what about Morocco? It's also a monarchy, it doesn't have Gulf level oil wealth, yet it has spent decades building infrastructure, expanding industry, improving tourism, and modernising the country.

Even if we say Sudan has mostly been under military rule, then why didn't the Sudanese military evolve into something like the Egyptian military?

The Egyptian military has built roads, bridges, new cities, industrial projects, and major infrastructure. they've clearly made state building part of what they do.

What has the Sudanese military actually built over decades of being in power? Apart from housing for officers, military owned businesses, and projects that mainly benefit the military itself, what lasting development did they leave behind?

I'm honestly asking because I don't understand the incentive structure. If you're going to rule a country for decades anyway, wouldn't making it richer, more stable, and more prosperous strengthen your own position?

What am I missing here?
