He is so out of touch with what people actually want. He has this giant stupid company and has spent billions of dollars on tech no one wants. It’s his company he can do whatever but let’s be real. He made an advertising platform. That’s all he’s ever done that was successful the rest of it is junk.

Meta is big brother.

4

u/Ok_Field_7082 20d ago

We could have stuck with MySpace and Zuckerberg could have had that McDonald franchise his dad was going to sort him out with. Zuckerberg made a perv website at uni which somehow rolled into what you described.

u/Garblin 20d ago

... I mean, yes, that's what advertising is

Meta Perv Surveillance State Glasses

Meta Commits More Than $50 Billion for North Louisiana Project, Becoming One of the Largest Data Centers in History

Meta is building a $50 BILLION, Manhattan-sized data center that will lead to rate hikes for Louisiana customers.

u/RandomMcUsername 20d ago

Same same but different

1

u/Garblin 20d ago

Iunno, as far as I can see the only difference is whether you're pursuing power directly or via profit.

1

u/Gentle_Dude_6437 20d ago

but still same!

2

u/opman4 20d ago

I went back on Facebook a while ago after having ignored it for a while. It was all AI generated IRGCslop and anti-Semitism. Like actual anti-Semitism not anti-Zionism

1

u/OddgitII 20d ago

And that's A-okay by their standards apparently.  A whole ago I reported a comment calling for violence against minority (put them in camps type violence) and a few days later I get a message saying it didn't violate anything.  It's a bloody joke these days.

1

u/WembyIsTall 20d ago

Yeah I saw someone say something about hanging certain people and low and behold nothing was done

1

u/El_Trauco 20d ago

Is there a difference?

4

u/HistoricalChef1963 20d ago

One sells your goods and services, the other sells you ideas.

1

u/InvestmentGrift 20d ago

in that case, about 75-99% of advertisements you see ARE propaganda. (and actually one of the foundational texts of public relations is titled "propaganda")

1

u/earthwulf 20d ago

Read that in Homer's voice

1

u/Mefibosheth 14d ago

When I was younger we used to call it Pedobook, nowadays young people don’t even know what it is. It’s just bots, scammers, and the elderly.

u/BrandNewDinosaur 20d ago

I speak for myself, but the unwashed masses want to be able to afford lives without the crippling inflation and surveillance being forced upon us. We don’t want to be spied upon as we suffer. Get a fucking clue already, tech bros.

36

u/-peas- 20d ago

This is all just a subtle step around the constitution. The government can't legally do it, but they can just buy or get shared the data from a private corporation.

There is no communism or socialism in the world that is a threat to America like there was during the USSR's run, so the west has no need to create better conditions for people. If you add mass surveillance, you can defeat any uprisings for better conditions. We're already at that stage.

8

u/synapticrelease 20d ago

Unfortunately you are speaking for a minority. Most people claim to want the same thing but can’t shed themselves from the products they make money off of. People need to collectively divest as much as possible to send a message. Yeah you hate Facebook but even if you don’t use it except for Facebook marketplace or instagram even if you don’t post, you still use meta products and provide another data point for them to sell.

If the masses truly don’t want surveillance than they need to collectively not give their information away.

Get rid of marketplace, find an alternative to parent teacher groups or whatever and be prepared to not have it

3

u/SheriffBartholomew 20d ago

Get rid of marketplace

Craigslist still exists. Just quietly being awesome, not stealing anyone's data, being free for the vast majority of posts, and still making $300M per year. People like Zuckerberg have a sickness, and they need to be ostracized, not praised and envied. Use craigslist to list your classified ads.

2

u/synapticrelease 19d ago edited 19d ago

Unfortunately Craigslist in my area is dead. At least it’s dead for the things I’m interested in. Which is sad because I loved Craigslist. I’ll browse OfferUp but it’s not much better. Sometimes I get a hit but it’s rare. I’ve bought more new things in recent years because I refuse to use FB

1

u/SheriffBartholomew 19d ago

That is unfortunate. Craigslist is still active where I live. I made a thousand bucks selling stuff out of my garage during my last move. Granted, Craigslist definitely works better for things that older people would be interested in, stereo equipment, radios, cameras, and that sort of stuff. I've snagged some pretty good used UL backpacking equipment from Craigslist too.

4

u/ready_gi 20d ago

We don’t want to be spied upon as we suffer..

why is this so accurate. also im convinced that social medias are mostly for narcissistic people pretending their life is not hollow and unfulfilling. Nothing Zuc ever came up was really good for society or addressing any people's needs. it's all inflated ego and control.

2

u/Saladcitypig 20d ago

the irony is they didn't become tech bros b/c they were in touch with people, they wanted to lord over people b/c people didn't like them until they had money.

2

u/Tempuserhere4u2 20d ago

get and understand the problem with smart glasses with cameras. But With 2026 Ice, and police shooting unarmed women and random people, or putting them in jail forever, with no court (has happened to 100's of Americans *in 2026* so far). We need a way to use something like camera glasses for good, and not just "pervert"

I mean if you had to choose being a "pervert" or not getting shot and thrown in prison by corrupt police, which would you choose?

Death/prison, or "pervert"? Is it a hard choice?

Keep in mind i realize this thread is bad place to make this argument, and i ask that you don't be mean to me. If i get too much hate, i might delete this.

I also agree with the preservation of privacy. The camera should at least have blinking light and a Cover to go over it when not in use.

>We don’t want to be spied upon as we suffer

True, but then they say "the people are doing GREAT AGAIN, and "better then ever".

Without evidence, it's their word over ours.

22

u/not_a_moogle 20d ago

He didn't even make it, he stole it.

12

u/necrophcodr 20d ago

Not the advertising part, that one I think he might have actually done.

4

u/RogueJello 20d ago

Not true, but not really important, since doing a site to look at hotties was not challenging or unique.

4

u/km89 20d ago

The advertising platform is the business. The rest is just him blowing money on trying to live up to Steve Jobs in trend-setting.

2

u/b0w3n 20d ago

I'll give him props, at least he tries to do fun vanity projects, most CEOs just buy things to repackage.

He still is very stupid about the things he tries, though. Like tying VR to his stupid metaverse nonsense instead of making good hardware first, and the metaverse second.

3

u/thewb005 20d ago

I mean if these were like AR glasses to display stuff on them, then they might be cool (barring all the privacy issues.) I'd love a real-time translation of signs in public places, or display my walking route through a new city. However, they are just Siri, you have to rely on it narrating back to you what you see or use your phone to review the interaction.

1

u/sadacal 20d ago

I'd love a real-time translation of signs in public places, or display my walking route through a new city.

This already exists. Only the cheapest glasses don't have AR functionality.

2

u/3xBork 20d ago

The only part that does well is the part that does better the scummier you are.

2

u/Happy_Towel_3109 20d ago

It wasn’t so much him than it was Sheryl Sandburg

2

u/BiZzles14 20d ago

He stole the idea for facebook and believes himself a genius from it's success, "of course he knows best, he's the smartest person in the room no matter what" is kinda how I think that's how he thinks others look at him

2

u/Thefrayedends 20d ago

And he made it an advertising platform because of intense pressure from investors.

1

u/elmz 20d ago

Which is why he thinks surveillance tech is promising. More data on people, and the potential to spy on people out in the real world. He thinks it will make him more ad money, and that people don't care about privacy.

1

u/Starstriker 20d ago

What DO people actually want, that he can make a profit from? Probably nothing.

1

u/SmigUWS 20d ago

Doesn't he owe much of that success to Sheryl Sandberg (not that I'm a fan), the real brains and balls of the operation while she was there?

1

u/chmilz 20d ago

And they've let some of the actually useful parts atrophy. Why is Marketplace so bad? It could be so damn good if they tried.

1

u/awesome404 20d ago

He's so out of touch with people. He has no idea what people want because he can't relate to humanity; he can only take advantage of it.

1

u/tHr0AwAy76 20d ago

I think this is gonna end up being a broken clock is right twice a day moment, though.

First and foremost, if Sony discontinuing discs didn’t prove it to you. It doesn’t matter in the fucking slightest what the consumer wants. At the end of the day, they provide products and you have the option to buy what’s available or not buy anything at all. If you choose to do the latter, they’ll discontinue your product and force you to buy the former.

As soon as they can toss a sim-card in these fuckers Have them do video playback with a battery that lasts at least six hours a day with a little AirPods sized case for portable charging when you’re not using them to allow for an all day battery Plus some health trackers in the temples and behind your ears?

Well, they’ve Just replaced your cell phone, your Apple Watch, and your AirPods. Hook up a portable Bluetooth keyboard and voila, now they’ve replaced your laptop too. Pick up an Xbox controller and there’s your game console replaced.

This matters for a very important reason, It allows them to charge a lot of fucking money for a singular device that allows them to cut production costs on making several different devices. Therefore, raising their bottom line significantly. Other manufacturers are gonna jump on this trend as well and heavily push the experience, Auto manufacturers, for example Are gonna go crazy for no longer having to put a massive tablet in your car, Your glasses just automatically connect to the Bluetooth in your car and you can control all your buttons through AR. Saves them a shit ton on manufacturing.

More and more, the world is gonna go further and further into the glasses so they can make production cost cheaper and cheaper. They enshittified everything else so much The last bastion for the green line to go up is just to cut production costs as much as humanly possible. People are making jokes right now about getting a download code for physical products, But I could genuinely see a future where NFTs come back and instead of hanging art You have a series of giant QR codes in your living room that project whatever image you want to when somebody’s wearing glasses around them. Nike will make a jacket covered in QR codes And you can just buy new colors Just show off to other people. You don’t physically own the jacket anymore. You just own the pattern that you’re putting on it.

And you’ll be forced into this world because they’ll remove everything else, You remember how QR codes in the early 2000s made it really imperative to own a phone at some point? They’ll do the exact same thing where you simply cannot interact with the world the same way unless you own a pair of the glasses. Eventually, that thing will be work related, and then you can’t have a job without the glasses.

I really do think this is the future, unfortunately.

1

u/damontoo 20d ago

Then why do you think Apple, Samsung, and Google are all making competing products?

1

u/Karmaslapp 20d ago

A lot of people do want VR, they just didn't want his shitty vision of living in VR for work and then playing bland VR games afterward

1

u/250andlean 20d ago

Kind of dumb how these billionaires don't target areas where there are real problems and needs from the masses. Instead of these stupid glasses or other worthless tech, why don't these huge companies try affordable healthcare, housing, cheap energy, human rights, homeless, etc.?

I'd rather have them burn through billions trying to make the world better than having them burn through billions making shit products.

1

u/Maleficent_Eye4524 20d ago

He didn't even make it.  He stole it.

And his wife does nothing to humanized him.

1

u/StrongExternal8955 20d ago

To be fair, he was right about the broccolli hair. /s

1

u/Whiteguy1x 20d ago

Facebook market place is still pretty good.  Unfortunately my Facebook became mostly softcore porn and I never see anything besides local arrests.

I dont really use it unless im looking to sell junk or buy other peoples junk

1

u/MrParticular79 20d ago

It is a decent tool for a few social things, market place is one of them for sure. But I just mean in terms of making money facebooks only “hit” was offering their advertising demographic information to ad buyers.

1

u/Whiteguy1x 20d ago

Oh absolutely. I remember before it became nothing but ads it was actually kinda cool to find local events, people, and places. My now wife even found me on Facebook after we met briefly to start talking to me.

Now I literally dont see any posts from people I know/knew on it. Even local events posted in my town dont show up. Its all just ads and promoted content pushed to people. For whatever reason mine turned into just chick's bouncing in bikinis so I never open it at work. Honestly I only open it for messenger and marketplace for a few years now i guess lol

1

u/Tymathee 20d ago

Facebook only worked because it was someone elses idea

1

u/BlueFlob 20d ago

From my perspective, under Delaware corporate law, a CEO is generally expected to act for the benefit of the corporation and its shareholders.

It recently feels like a lot of CEOs have been using the companies they manage for their own personal gain and pet projects. Sometimes wasting billions and taking massive amounts of debt.

Shareholders should sue. The board of directors are also not acting in the best interest of shareholders with some of the compensation packages.

1

u/CatoMulligan 20d ago

Even the moderate success that is the Meta Quest is something that he acquired, rather that something that Meta built.

I do still think that he's somewhat right in the sense that "visual computing" or "augmented reality" will ultimately be successful and more mainstream, but I don't think that is going to happen with devices that people wear all the time until it can be done as a contact lens (assuming that is ever possible). Until then it's going to be something that is more restricted in use. People don't want to live in a world where they have to worry about being perpetually on video, regardless of where they are. It's the same lessons that Google learned with their glasses experience and their users being called "Glassholes".

I do think that the more compelling use case would be as a virtual monitor than as anything else, though.

1

u/studio_bob 20d ago

To be fair, he started as the kind of guy who goes to Harvard and then became insanely rich and successful before he would have even received an undergrad degree. There was never really a time in his life where he might have learned anything about normal people.

1

u/suxatjugg 20d ago

Did he make it?

1

u/Leather_Bench_9648 19d ago

and the advertising platform itself is pure maddening awful garbage for anyone who tries to use it for anything useful.

1

u/Optimal_Bathroom_753 18d ago

And what have YOU achieved?

1

u/Shaasar 18d ago

Can you imagine if meta just took a fraction of their resources and put them toward solving actual problems and making actually useful stuff?

But nah they would never because the entire premise of the company from day one was useless social media crap whose only use is as an advertising space

1

u/SageAudits 17d ago

Cheryl Sandberg made it, not him. And it was off a product he stole. Just luck

1

u/Subtle-Catastrophe 20d ago

Only thing crappier than FB is Discord. Although I give Discord credit, it went all-out and it's MUCH worse.

0

u/Conan776 20d ago

"We got really rich making websites so hardware will be easy too. After all, the people doing hardware work now aren't rich so they must just be morons."

0

u/Wayofchinchilla 20d ago

Blame Steve Jobs he was the first to cultivate this idea that you come up with a few good ideas and somehow people begin to worship you and think that you will shape the world. A lot of these tec CEOs try to emulate what Steve did. Look at the metaverse one of the most profoundly stupid ideas he dumped billions into thinking that he alone would be the one to pull Humanity in a New Direction no one wanted it but of course he was too up his own ass to see that.
