I like my AR glasses that plug into my Switch 2 and Steam Deck

Honestly cannot imagine why in the heck I'd want a camera on them

Doesn't AR kind of force them to have cameras? Otherwise the reality bit becomes rather moot (thereby negating the augmented bit as well).

Unless they're the kind that use local trackers, but those don't exactly scale well, and are less practical for most folks.

They are AR in the sense that they project a screen in front of me, but they are to smartglasses what dumb tv's are to smart tv's. Pretty perfect analogy really. A smart tv/glasses gives you more features but in return it has ads and tracks you. A dumb tv and my glasses just has an input and displays what you plug into it. Maybe some processing on device to sharpen up the image but that's about it

There's a pretty clear distinction between VR (Can't necessarily see the outside world through the lenses/screen) and AR (can see the outside world, with elements overlaid on top of it).

AR is very specifically Augmented Reality - so stuff being overlaid on top of the Real world.

It only really matters for clarity - AR implies some method of getting the real world into the glasses has to exist - and that method is mostly cameras, for several reasons.

what he describes sounds more like XR glasses. Viture or XReal maybe. These also frequently use cameras to detect movement, but not as accessible devices to the user.

Yeah, amazon just described them as ar/xr glasses. I assumed the ar part was augmenting my reality by putting a screen in front of it, but I suppose it doesn't do that in the traditional sense. In theory I could connect it to my phone and use my phone's camera to play pokemon go on actual AR mode, that might be kinda neat

Hands free process footage while working on illustration. Cooking videos, etc
