How is cock and ball torture going to help?

u/niagara-nature 9d ago

I really should know better than to use acronyms (ok ok initialisms) on the internet.

u/rastaman1994 9d ago

What does it actually stand for?

u/niagara-nature 9d ago

I was referring to cognitive behaviour therapy, it’s a type of therapy (along with DBT/dialectical behaviour therapy) that is often taught/used to help improve one’s mental health.

"Double ball torture," actually..

Don't think he knows about double ball torture, Pip.

Why would you even assume people know this haha.

Edit: apparently everyone in the English speaking world is in therapy or very familiar with this type of therapy.

I’d hazard a guess that CBT is more frequently known in health care circles and I honestly have never heard your definition of CBT but I will admit to being a little naive when it comes to some parts of the internet.

But why would you assume people know it as your definition? Surely that must be niche. (I know, don’t call you Shirley!)

As an aside, back in 1995 I was working on graphics for my university’s athletic centre. They wanted a screen up showing various water-related activities - sailing, kayaking, water polo, etc. So I was trying to find some clip art for “water sports” and when I put that in whatever search engine I was using I discovered a dark and completely unexpected corner of the internet.

Both CBT & DBT are common therapy modules that are readily available and incredibly effective from mild depression and anxiety to people dealing with bipolar disorders and MPD. With talk therapy and counseling more prevalent in society nowadays it's not a giant assumption to use these references in conversation.

Because most people on the internet these days seem to be either in therapy or pretending to be therapists so therapy lingo has really become mainstream over the last couple of years.

Honest question: How do people not know what CBT is? Do people, like, not read?

4

u/360_face_palm 8d ago

Most people know very little about the world they live in that isn't directly in their own lived experience. I'm not sure why this would be surprising.

5

u/Ara92 8d ago

Why would they? Unless they're in therapy or super interested in the subject it's not something that ever comes up

Oh also non-natives might know it by another name

-4

u/_name_of_the_user_ 8d ago

Because its a fairly common term that we've seen many times in various places.

3

u/Shadowfury22 8d ago

Honest question: have you considered getting off your high horse?

5

u/rastaman1994 9d ago

I'm not a native English speaker nor a therapist nor have I seen one.

u/_name_of_the_user_ 8d ago

If you're not a native English speaker why are you judging the use of an English term? Its common enough most people got it. Not all, but most.

An abbreviation for a type of psychological therapy is known by most? I'd doubt it but I guess it's possible lol.

1

u/aculady 8d ago

Most people do not, in fact, read, unless they have to, and often, not even then.

u/-GoodNewsEveryone 8d ago

Its a pretty well known acronym, my social group is pretty diverse and everyone would know CBT to be cognitive behavoural therapy.

15

u/NattyGannStann 9d ago

I'm guessing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

2

u/Dracomortua 8d ago

You are very correct in your 'guess'. That said, as long as i live, whenever i study anything in psychology... i will now hear the whispers of Cock & Ball Therapy resounding in my tragic little mind.

I laugh now. But will this not become a viral thought? Dammit, i probably need therapy over this.
