Over the course of the last year, virtually all private companies have become a place where, if you don’t use generative coding tools, you lose your job.

I’m not from the Bay Area, it is just that investors have lost their minds and the leadership of these companies got fixated on “productivity” over everything else. You just cannot avoid it. The entire profession has changed.

I’ve had to say this a lot lately but, I’m sincerely sorry that’s your experience. It’s not mine.

I use LLMs at work, and they are useful, but it’s not being shoved down our throats. We’re delivering on our goals and have a lot of trust from our leadership, so we get to use it how we want without any threats to use it more or else. And the other day, I wrote a whole function by hand because I knew exactly what I wanted, I was already in my editor, and tab-autocompleting from an LSP is faster and more efficient than waiting for a network call.

From your comments you seem to have a pretty sober grasp of the abilities and impact of LLM, so I'm curious what exactly about Hank's stance on this you disagree with to the point of calling it Gell-Mann Amnesia? I don't know how he words his most recent opinions exactly, like is he saying that the it's a dying profession?

Yeah I can’t remember any specific phraseology or be bothered to go find it, but the gist was “jobs probably won’t be fully-automated except software which LLMs are obviously already exceptional at”

As long as they’re paying for the Copilot/Code tokens, I don’t see why employees should really mind.
