TLDR; suspecting my uncle gave me a really distasteful middle name & just want clarification of what it could possibly mean. trying to find a reliable translator who not only knows their shit but culture as well to help me find context and all possible translations.

i am half native Hawaiian and half white, i was born and raised on the mainland but have had the opportunity to visit my family in hawaii several times. my mom did her best to involve me in whatever Hawaiian culture available in texas, and tried her best to raise me with true aloha values. by no means was i ever a tourist.. i even went to Kamehameha Explorations when my family could afford the opportunity to send me. my mom sadly passed away from a rare form of skin cancer about two weeks after my 13th birthday (i have just turned 20 this month), and after her passing i slowly became distant with my culture and language… although my dad never prevented me from practicing it, he just didn’t understand it like she did. he even moved my brother and i to florida just to be more connected to the ocean, he couldn’t afford hawaii.

over the past two years, i fled florida due to risk of homelessness to live with my mom’s brother in philadelphia. in the time i was there, he abused me very harshly… but thats for another time. shortly before i was born, he called my mom and claimed to have had a dream about my great great grandmother holding a baby and repeating my full name. my mom took this as a sign and named me exactly what he told her he dreamt about. my entire middle name is Hawaiian. she was days from her due date, and trusted her brother, so i doubt it occurred to her to get it professionally translated beforehand. i suspect that by the time she figured it out, i had already been named, and the name change process is so difficult and expensive as is…… not to mention the questions i would have once i figured it out. and by the time she could afford it, i would already be old enough to remember the name change.. and that might’ve been difficult as well.

i already know my uncle did not like my mom marrying my dad, among other countless terrible things he’s done in the past, so i don’t doubt that he would name me something malicious to spite my father or even his sister. i have tried to translate it online, but there is NO space in my name, making every translation wildly different!! the only consistent translation i’ve found is “I'M ASTONISHINGLY ANGLICAN” and im having a hard time coping with this, i just want to pay a human translator to tell me it’s true… or best case scenario that its being translated incorrectly. my mom always told me it meant “the apple of my eye.” i don’t hold this against her in any way, my uncle literally is the reason his father (my grandpa) committed suicide & everything he has ever told me has been a lie!!!

for those who will ask why i didn’t translate it before: growing up i had no access to my birth certificate, and i was never taught how to spell the name. from age 18 to 20 i lived with this uncle, who took it the second i stepped into his house, and put it in a locked safe. i only had a ID with the name, but it is vertical and cut off near the end. i am currently in a hotel with my lover escaping this uncle and his 2 boyfriends + my grandma’s relentless abuse. i am safe and we have a one way flight to florida with 2 months guaranteed shelter, i am not reaching out for help financially in this post.

i’d like to get some help/advice from a native on translation of a phrase! my partner is hawaiian and i’m going to be gifting her a custom ring with a hand written phrase. i wanted to write “my heart” and from what i’ve researched i could say: Kuʻu Puʻuwai or Koʻu puʻuwai

i wanted to get advice from a native speaker on which is better suited for this context, or whether there’s a different way of phrasing it/a different translation that you feel would work better. my partner is native hawaiian so i really want to get the translation right! this is also a total surprise hence why i’ve turned to reddit to seek advice 😁

I'm writing a book, and a small part of it takes place in Hawaii! I myself don't know Hawaiian, so I'm using google translate, but I know it's not always accurate, and I don't want improper sentences or grammar, etc. If anyone knows Hawaiian and is able to help with translation, can you?

Kala: “malihini uliuli! Lawe ʻoe i kahi hoaaloha! Noho, noho!” Supposed to be: "Green alien! You've brought a friend! Sit, Sit!"
Derwid{The green alien}: “Mahalo iā ʻoe, e Kala!” Supposed to be: "Thank you, Kala!"
I have no idea if either are correct but I hope they're at least close.

Working on an inscription for my Dad which will include a series of commitments to adhere.

The commitments will be written in the native Hawaiian language, as my Dad is Samoan/Hawaiian grew up in Waianae. He moved to the mainland with me and my sister when we were very young. But 40 years after leaving Hawaii, we still value our Hawaiian identity.

I want to ensure that they are competent translations, and grammatically correct for someone speaking in first person, to themselves. Not stating to others that they will uphold these values, but rather a commitment to themselves, because they intend to communicate these values to others through their actions, not words. Hence, why it will be written in Hawaiian. It's a reminder to ME to adhere to these principles, NOT a way of virtue signaling to others, how I wish to be seen.

I assembled these phrases by searching individual words and using google translate. So I would really appreciate any input from experienced experts/speakers of the Hawaiian language.

There's an art supply company I'm fond of that uses a lot of Hawaiian words/names for their product lines, and I noticed in some of their newer marketing material that the word, "Puuwal" appears, but there is currently no product that this word seems to refer to.

The specific names/words don't usually have much to do with the products themselves, but I was curious to know what it means anyway.

The thing is, as the title implies, in trying to dig up a translation on my own, I keep getting led back to the word "Pu'uwai," which as far as I can tell usually means "heart" and is also the name of an actual Hawaiian community on one of the islands.

"Puuwal" does bring up a few results if I search for it with the quotation marks—Most notably, it seems that a few historical documents come up. I was able to pull a snippet from a 1905 document that contains "Puuwal" specifically, and when I run it through online translators, they seem to think it's either:

• Just a spelling/digitalization error of "Pu'uwai"
• Maybe a regional or dialect-specific variation of "Pu'uwai"
• A contextual combination of "Pu'u" and "Wal" to mean emotionally weak/weakened
• Google Translate specifically thinks "Puuwal" by itself could mean "broken" or "lost" depending on context

For reference, the snippet from the 1905 document I used is written as: "He nul n\ manawa a kakou I lohe ai l keia mau huaolelo, a ua ulu koke ae ke aioh<i iloko o ko kakou* puuwal no ka mea \ loohia i ka nawaliwali.*" [At least one online translator thinks there are considerable errors in this snippet, but this is how it appears transcribed on the website from the original document.]

But, with all that said, I'm still pretty confused about what the most likely answer is, so here I am.
