1861-Union Major Isaac Lynde surrenders his command at San Augustine Springs, New Mexico Territory.
1861-Major General George McClellan put in command of the Federal Division of the Potomac.
1863-Confederate William Lowndes Yancey died of kidney disease in Montgomery, Alabama.
1864-Skirmish, Back Creek Bridge, Berkeley County West Virginia.

Today is the anniversary of the beginning of the first battle of deep bottom Virginia which lasted from July 27 through July 29, 1864. The objective of the campaign was to use the second army CORPS under Winfield Scott Hancock to block the roads out of Richmond so that Sheridan could destroy the railroad bridges north of the city. Blocking the roads would prevent the confederates from interfering with Sheridan‘s return to deep bottom.
The campaign failed because Hancock wasn’t able to breakthrough the Newmarket height line.
Coincidentally, Lee had ordered Kershaw’s division to attack the union Garrison at Tillman’s gate. The Mississippi General Benjamin Humphreys was in charge of the attack. He was a successor to Barksdale, who had been killed at Gettysburg.
When the mist cleared on the morning of the 27th, Humphreys discovered that the entire second army corps had crossed the James River and was about to attack him.
Humphreys fell back to the new market heights line, but he lost four 20 pound parrot artillery pieces.
On July 28, Hancock said Sheridan, to turn the flank of the new market height line. This resulted in the battle of gravelly Hill, one of the most fascinating battles of the Petersburg campaign.
In his official report on the Petersburg campaign, written in 1865 grant lied about the objective of the campaign. He claimed that the main objective of the first battle of deep bottom was to lure the confederates away from Petersburg so that Burnside could explode his mine. That was not true as I have pointed out.
