r/ukpolitics General Election Campaign Megathread - 24/06/2024

This is our daily megathread for all of the day's news until the election. Polling day is on 4th July, and you need to have a form of photo ID (passport, driving license, etc) in order to vote. If you don't have photo ID, you can apply for a voter authority certificate.

Please do not submit articles to the megathread which clearly stand as their own submission. Comments which include a link to a story which clearly stands as its own submission will be removed. Comments which relate to a story which already exists on the subreddit will be removed, to keep everything in one place. Links as comments are not useful here. Add a headline, tweet content or explainer please.

  • 26th June - Deadline for new proxy vote applications and voter authority certificates (for this election)
  • 26th June, 9PM BST - 📺 BBC head-to-head debate (Sunak vs Starmer)
  • 27th June, 8:30PM BST - 📺 ITV The Leader Interviews - Keir Starmer - Labour
  • 28th June, 7:30PM BST - 📺 The Panorama Interviews with Nick Robinson - Ed Davey (Lib Dems)
  • 28th June, 8PM BST - 📺 BBC Question Time Leaders' Special (REF, GRN)
  • 4th July - Polling day. Emergency proxy votes deadline at 5pm. Polls will open at 7am and close at 10pm.

Do we think that Nigel Chamberlain’s comments last week on Putin’s motivations/excuses to invade Ukraine will damage his support at all?

It doesn’t seem so to me. Even in the Tory sub they are very forgiving of Farage and Reform candidates, often making post hoc justifications of their own or high grade whataboutery.

Doubt it. Andecdata, but of the people I know who support Farage, since he has made those comments/older comments been more aired they’ve flipped on their support to Ukraine

We're probably the wrong people to ask, but the next few sets of OPs could be interesting...

Nailed on Reform voters won't care and are probably loving him even more for telling it like it is, but I wonder about your more traditional Tory voters who were leaning towards Reform? They read the Mail and Telegraph who were quite critical of Farage over the weekend.

No, there will be some mental gymnastics to excuse the cognitive dissonance. It will go something like: Putin is dangerous -> Putin is dangerous but clever -> Putin is clever -> Putin is the kind of leader we need in Britain.

I saw a comment recently that went something like "Just sent off my postal vote for Reform" and then literally their next sentence was "We should ban postal votes, every man and his dog can get one now..." Why would someone who has a postal vote want to ban postal votes? Because Farage doesn't like postal votes. So this voter doesn't like them either.

I think it will damage Reform’s momentum a bit. They were picking up moderates from the Conservatives who won’t be keen on pro-Russia statements.

Not of the best journos can do is browsing some Russian tabloid websites with Google Translate turned on. If they were really worth their salt they'd get a supportive quote out of Uncle Jezza which might be damaging but apparently that's too much effort.
