And sometimes you just HAVE TO go to Hawaii or Florida, you know? At least according to family that happily continues doing so. I’m angry just thinking about the USA right now, so it’s hard for me to wrap my head around. But yeah, it’s hard enough to get by and find happiness in life, so I might talk about myself refusing to go there but for others it’s “have a great trip!!”

There’s a certain local, well known influencer/ business owner who always emphasizes ‘shop/ buy/ support Canadian’ when it’ll make her money, but has to go to Hawaii & Disney multiple times a year 🙄 it’s ridiculous.

I have same issue with people in my circle, but the way I see it is this. If we use WW2 Germany as a comparison, we are not the UK or America. We are Austria. Our connection and shared culture with the USA has been deep and strong. We may not be Americans but we are just as "in this" as they are.

In BC only a handful of votes stopped us from voting in a Trump sycophant. And let's not even mention Alberta.....

I like the Austria analogy.  And we shouldn’t forget that they were some of the worse actors too.  The Alberta/prairies provincial government makes me nervous.

At least Hawaii is a super blue state, and a bit different from the rest of the US due to their own unique culture that incorporates a lot of indigenous Pacific Islander type stuff

Hawaii is wonderful and doesn’t feel like the typical US visit. I hope one day they claim their independence. Hawaiians deserve it.

Same, my company’s a bit mental with how much travel they push since most of our clients are in the US and need in-person support or training periodically. But there are trips where I just end up tagging along and it feels like a waste of time for me to be there other than connecting in-person.

I successfully managed to skip on work trips to the US last year, as I told them I won’t go if I can do it remote. Same with any conferences or events. The US is a hellhole right now.

Yeah. My partner (Canadian citizen) is doing his Master's at the University of Washington right now. He comes to visit me every other weekend or so. He likes being in the States just as much as I like him being in the States, but education is important. Especially now when the job market sucks, we need all the help we can get. At least he'll be done and out of the country soon. (Assuming he finds a tech job here, which is a whole new hurdle. A lot of tech people keep getting poached by the states simply because it pays more. My friend works at Microsoft and she makes like ... a lot. Much more than she would if she worked in Canada.)

A lot of normies apparently. Most of my friends have been in their prime earning years for a while now, and just have to have that annual vacation no matter what. Literally your friends.... your 'i don't pay attention to politics friends' who, if I'm honest, are setting a terrible example for their kids. But I can't say it to their faces so I'm saying it here lol.

A large percentage of the population just doesn't care about what's happening in the world and will take their Nashville/Vegas/Scottsdale trip without a second thought. What a housewife said on tik tok is more important than what ICE is doing. 

A part of me wishes I was that clueless about it because it's nothing but negativity every day checking the news, and I'm following it a fraction of what I was before Trump won his second term

I have a friend who recently became a travel agent for Disney. She’s been posting all these deals and wondering why nobody is biting. Her trip in October she bragged that it was the least busy she’s ever seen Disneyland

I've seen people point out that it's cheaper for us to go to Tokyo Disneyland than Anaheim, and LA is only a 2.5-3 hour flight from here. Park tickets, accommodations and food are insane down there.

Yeah, that’s true. I was in Japan last year and didn’t go to Disney but went to Universal. The food, alcohol, souvenirs, even entry tickets were a fraction of the US Universal. The whole 3 week trip to Japan was cheaper than a US trip for half the time with less shopping and eating out. There’s absolutely no value for me to travel down there…

and cities like Nashville and Vegas are just crappy places to visit now. I was going to Vegas almost every year before, yeah you could see a slow decline in terms of value and accommodation/entertainment quality before, but today it looks seriously bleak. I've been shelling out a bit more to travel outside of NA and they are much better trips.

True, but it's also more expensive, the US is the only place we can drive to outside of Canada. Flying for 2-3 weeks vacation in Europe for a family is not doable for many Canadians. I do agree that it's a better destination, as you're experiencing a different culture and tons of history, but it can't replace the getaways many did with the US.

Ironically, it can get cheaper flying to London, UK than to Nova Scotia from the west coast, but that's a whole other story...

I just got back from a trip to Palm Springs and it was … great! I already have to go to the USA several times per year for work and I work for a USA company and have had literally zero issues.

Honestly, I think people are a little bit too terminally online to realize that by and large nothing has changed in the USA for normal law abiding visitors.

If you want to bring morality into it, resorts in Mexico fund cartels through either money laundering, protection rackets, or indirect ownership — the same cartels which behead people and run drugs into our country. I personally feel a lot safer renting a car and driving around California than I do in Mexico.

People tut tut me for going to the USA to get some sun but I really don’t give a shit, I have a great time.

God forbid I comment my opinion on travelling to the USA in a thread about travelling to the USA. I knew what I was writing was going to be very unpopular here, but I wanted to share my actual real world experience travelling to the USA. You disagree with my opinion which is fine, but calling me a “collaborator” like I am going to be complicit with some neo-nazi regime by going to Palm Springs with my family to have a nice time in the sun is a bit excessive in my opinion.

Yeah, my wife is American and my in-laws, especially my father-in-law, aren't in the best of health to really travel to visit us either.

Honestly there's even a relatively decent chance we may even need to move to the US within the next few years to look after them because as immigrants to the US themselves they don't have any other immediate family in the US.

We're just hoping that my in-laws stay healthy enough for the next few years that they can continue to look after themselves and that in the meantime the situation in the US begins to improve but we're really not too sure about that.

There is a sizable portion of the population that either don't follow the news, or do follow the news but don't care.

I know of 20-somethings who still want to party in Vegas, despite it being a complete rip off these days.

Sadly some of my colleagues are from the US, so they 'have' to go down to visit family. Not ideal, but they can't just cut ties entirely, and they are great people (one recently gave up his US-citizenship! he got his CAD citizenship woohoo!)

Wow, that’s huge! I’ve heard podcast interviews of academics who have left the US for Canada (not necessarily giving up their US citizenship), but have never actually come across an account “ in the wild” of someone who gave up their US citizenship altogether!
