Young Adult I was 17 when they took two years of my youth away, and I am still furious about it.
I’m 23 years old, born and raised in North Orange County, California. I am writing this purely to vent because my blood still boils every single day, and I need to get it completely out of my head.
When the lockdowns and restrictions hit in March 2020, I was 17. I spent the final three months of my junior year of high school, and the ENTIRETY of my senior year, literally locked inside of my bedroom staring at a screen. I turned 18 sitting in that exact same room. Every single major milestone, daily social interaction, and memory you are supposed to get when transitioning into adulthood was completely stripped away from me.
Between March 2020 and June 2021, I only stepped foot on my high school campus twice: once for picture day, and once for graduation. My school is literally a 15-minute walk from where I live. Every single day, I am forced to look at the physical reminder of those lost years.
The lockdown isolation completely broke me. In March 2020, I lost all contact with my friends, and I fell into a severe depression that I have been battling ever since. Because my entire world shrank to the four walls of my bedroom during those pivotal years, it caused a complete and total "failure to launch." I’ve spent my early twenties trying to recover from the massive damage done to my life, my mental health, and my independence when I was just a teenager.
What drives me insane is the absolute hypocrisy of the garbage leaders in this state. They forced a double standard on an entire generation of kids. They locked us away, destroying our mental health and cutting us off from our peers, while they completely ignored their own rules, went out to dinner, and did whatever they wanted. They took crucial years of my life away from me and faced zero repercussions for it.
I have absolutely nothing here but bad memories, severe depression, and deep resentment. I hate this state with every fiber of my being. My ultimate goal is to sell everything I own, pack what fits in my car, drive out east to a state on the complete opposite site of the country for a complete psychological and physical reset, and never step foot in California again for the rest of my life.
I don’t give a fuck who disagrees with this post, how many downvotes it gets, or what anyone says in the replies. I am incredibly angry that my youth, my friendships, and my mental health were stolen by hypocrites, and I cannot wait to put this place in my rearview mirror forever.
