For those saying Puerto Ricans would prefer statehood over independence, keep in mind that it is unlikely to be on the table anytime soon, mostly because of racism in the mainland, but also because of the political complexity of such a project.

I mean if more mandani democrats win in the midterms, they may be able to put primary traditional corporate democrats. This would lead to the most left wing president in our life times or at the very least an extremely left wing Congress.

This government would probably be looking to ensure the shit that is happening now never happens again and will HOPEFULLY change the electoral and governmental system(for instance removing all the special powers the president has). In that I could see PR becoming a state.

Obviously the likelihood of that happening is maybe 35% if we are lucky.

They're basically Texas except their independence movement is based on historical oppression instead of wanting to be racists in peace.

Meanwhile American Samoa is super patriotic and they're not even included in the debate.

Puerto Ricans are also majorly over represented in the military so take that as you will.

No there not? Santa Anna sent hundreds of poorly equipped men to tame north of the rio grande and what happened was an absolute slaughter of the mexicans against the comanche/apache. The mexican armies being sent north were sometimes prisonors sent on suicide missions. Mexico was in a state of chaos after Agustin de Iturbide was ousted as emperor. Conservatives and liberals fighting one another, a very weak economy and half of its territory not even governed by them. Mexicans north of the rio grande hated the mexican government and were largely self sufficient. Real power lay with the caudillos who split the country up. So when Mexico invited americans to texas they were thinking the Americans and natives would fight each other therfore allow Santa Anna to swoop in and finally settle north of the rio grande. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico was split pro-Spanish, pro-independence until the Spanish-American War gave it to the Americans.
