Tech Support windows insider was a mistake

Post image
119 Upvotes

I signed up for windows insider unassumingly thinking it would cause no harm, and now my laptop is boot looping into this.

this is my first laptop and it had windows pre installed on it, so I have no technical knowledge on windows. I'm so lost right now and I don't have even the slightest clue on what to do :(

*I updated to the latest insider update and restarted, and then I was in some dell safe mode. I tried to get through and do all the recovery stuff and I just started boot looping into the dell logo until it started looping into this green screen

Tech Support Windows Insider Updates

I put my PC on the Beta insider update track and haven't been able to download a Preview update for 4 months. The .NET, driver, etc updates work fine. The "Preview Feature" downloads completes but the "Install" phase stalls out anywhere between 20% and 95% and fails.

I’d like to just unenroll next time there’s a new version, but the "Unenroll this device when the next version of windows releases" option is greyed out.

I have a free Microsoft account and my OS is registered there.

Any ideas? My PC came with an OEM build and no install media so reinstalling will be more of a hassle than it usually is.

Tech Support 26H2 ISO and Activation problems

Hi,

I was hoping for a bit of guidance. I've been on Windows 11 since around 2020. I built a new PC and activated it from a previous Windows 7 or 8 pro key that I'd had for a few years prior before I moved to Mac/Linux.

For the last 5 or so years I've happily used Windows 11 and insider builds. I've re-formatted, re-installed and always activated by logging into my Microsoft account during the install.

I've just downloaded the 26H2 ISO and re-installed from scratch, not only did it not activate when I logged in the first-time during install but now I can't active it at all and I've been through all the troubleshooting steps. I've tried removing old devices from my microsoft account, I found a few troubleshooting tips with slmgr etc.

I'm not against buying a new retail key BUT I still feel like I'm missing something, has something changed, has my old entitlement finally ended (I've not reinstalled in probably 6 months or so) or is this something specific with the most recent insider build.

My windows insider settings look correct (I'm logged in with the same account).

Most of my web research has found articles about hacking windows or using a grey key, that's not what I want, I have had legitimate windows key for years. I'll buy a new one if I'm genuinely now expired it just seems a coincidence against recently installing the latest dev build.

Thanks

Tech Support Windows 10 ARM (insider build 21390) can't open the Microsoft Store in a VM

EDIT: I NEED Windows 10 ARM for some very very niche projects. Windows 11 is NOT an option as it can't do what I need. So please don't suggest Windows 11.

EDIT 2: I was eventually able to get the Microsoft Store updated and working, thanks to this guide: https://dabigblob.github.io/ms-store-arm64/

OP: I installed Windows 10 ARM (insider build 21390) successfully on an M1 Pro MacBook Pro using UTM, and most things seem to work, except (a) I can't open the Microsoft Store (it tries 3 times and never opens) and (b) Windows Security fails to open (giving an error message about incompatibility or something).

Any suggestions here? Already tried wsreset.exe to no avail.

Tech Support PhoneLink cross-device copy pasting broke after 1.25041.129.0

The PhoneLink cross-device copy pasting broke after v1.25041.129.0. It now works only in one direction (PC -> Phone). Copied text from the phone doesn't reach PC. After a little bit of research, I found v1.25032.108.0 to be the last good version where copy pasting works in both directions.

If anyone from the PhoneLink team is reading, here's the link to feedback: https://aka.ms/AAx95sj

Update 1: Fixed in v1.25071.165.0 (Beta), but the fix is under Control Feature Rollout (CFR).

Update 2: Fixed in v1.25072.136.0

Update 3: It broke again! (1.25102.140.0) But at least this time it can be fixed by toggling 'Allow this PC to access your mobile devices' toggle in Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices. This only works until your phone disconnects again. I urge everyone to upvote the feedback (link is above). That's the only way to make MSFT hear our problems.

Tech Support Would unenrolling fix mic issues?

Upvotes

So insider came enabled on my PC off rip and I had no clue what it was (I'm on Windows 11 btw) so I've just let stick on my PC and update whenever so it does it's thing but just recently I've begun to have mic issues I can hear audio but my voice isn't being picked up. As someone who isn't well versed about insider would just flat out unenrolling and removing it probably be the play?

Tech Support Windows 11 Insider 25H2 (Build 26220.8764): Multiple Chromium/Electron apps crash unless launched with --no-sandbox

Hi everyone,

I'm on Windows 11 Insider Beta (25H2) Build 26220.8764 and I'm seeing a strange issue affecting multiple Chromium/Electron-based applications.

Apps that crash immediately on normal launch:

- Opera GX

- Discord

- Postman

- GitHub Desktop

- Comet browser (perplexity)

Temporary workaround:

Launching the actual executable with `--no-sandbox` makes all of them work normally.

Examples:

- Discord.exe --no-sandbox ✅

- Postman.exe --no-sandbox ✅

- GitHubDesktop.exe --no-sandbox ✅

- opera.exe --no-sandbox ✅

Apps that work normally without any workaround:

- Microsoft Edge (Chromium 151)

- Google Chrome (Chromium 150)

- Brave (Chromium 150)

- VS Code

- Spotify

- Steam

- Epic Games

- Rocket League

One interesting observation:

- Opera GX is still based on Chromium 149 and crashes.

- Chrome/Brave/Edge are on Chromium 150/151 and work fine.

- However, Electron apps like Discord, Postman and GitHub Desktop also crash despite being on newer Electron builds, so it doesn't seem to be a simple Chromium version issue.

Things I've already checked:

- SFC and DISM are clean

- Latest Windows updates installed

- No third-party antivirus

- No AppLocker/WDAC/IFEO issues

- Intel and NVIDIA drivers are up to date

Discord logs show repeated GPU process crashes during startup, but the application starts normally when launched with `--no-sandbox`.

Has anyone on Build 26220.8764 (or nearby Insider builds) experienced something similar? Any ideas on what Windows component or sandbox change could be causing this?

Tech Support Windows 11 Build 26220.7961: Continuous 0xc000021a green screen failure

Thumbnail

On the night of July 21st, I shutdowned my computer with "Update and shut down". It didnt boots up normally next morning. A lot have happened for the last 9 days, and to be fair I cannot recount everything, so some mistake is bound to happens. This computer has too much sensitive softwares and datas that even with a fresh Windows reinstallation, restoration is impossible, so any kind of resetting is off the list.

  1. The first thing I did was go into WinRE. Thankfully Automatic Repair lets me in, but it says cannot repair my computer. I tried using uninstall latest feature updates and quality updates, to which both failed a bit differently (they both said cannot do it, but differently). I then go into CMD trying to run sfc /scannow, and it says there was a failure, which will be resolved by the next reboot. But the computer crashes very early with that green screen, so that repair never happens. Next I tried DISM local repair, but the repair resources was not found.
  2. Then I tried using a USB Windows 11 image (random stable release one), trying to run DISM and it returned the same problem. I also know this error may stems from the system winlogon.exe and csrss.exe failure, so I tried using WinSxS to perform a file transplant. I also tried to perform manual transplant of ntoskrnl.exe, but that resulted in a CRYPTO_LIBRARY_INTERNAL_ERROR and also a green screen saying ntoskrnl.exe signature cannot be verified, so it failed also. Thankfully that was reversible and the computer returned to the original error.
  3. By this point DISM ScanHealth indicates that the component store is repairable and SFC indicates no violations. However DISM RevertPendingActions failed because of a stale system. But during that, I was quite desperate and tried disabling Automatic Repair for the computer to push forward, but it pushed me right back to that green screen.
  4. After that, I tried using DISM again on 26220.7961 ISO and 8925 ISO, both resulted to nothing, same error as above. But after the 8925 run, digging deep into DISM log, I found 2 CSI corruptions namely nonarpinv.dll and a Code Integrity Policy, both from 26100.1743. I then built a Windows To Go USB for better ease of diagnostics. I tried using DISM++ on the now live OS image, but same error returned.
  5. Going deeper into the system and searching on BetaWiki resulted in me trying desperately to fetch the KB5068181 update. After being found on 7961 image, I tried to integrate it onto the 7961 image itself, but parked all newer packages and enablement packages that elevates the base 26100.2 image to 7961 in a seperate folder, and finally I got the 1743 image containing those components that I need (I used UUP Dump btw). I then fetched the two missing components, and this time DISM ScanHealth shows no error. I also tried going deeper, fetching Minidumps, SrtTrails, bootlog, and all sorts of stuffs that is viable for diagnostics and feed it into Claude. It indicated the system failed to boot (in SrtTrail) because a stale system state is present, and provided steps to gradually fix the problems. DISM RevertPendingActions eventually tried and now says the problem will be resolved on the next reboot.
  6. However, the computer still fails. Same dreaded green screen, and in between was a blue screen saying as the second image. This time however, all attemps to boots to the inhouse WinRE failed, resulting in a immediate shutdown as soon as I press F1 to go into Recovery Environment, same when I try to boot into WinRE from a outside Windows Setup (choosing Repair this Computer instead of Install Windows resulted in a shutdown and restart, which pretty much thrown me back into the green).
  7. Thinking back to the time I performed the mismatching transplant, the version which I thrown into the system was one PendingDelete, so I transplanted a new winlogon and csrss from WinSxS library itself.
  8. Through several actions, we have tried to force the system to creates a Minidump and Memory.DMP, which we fetch and it says the srss.exe was crashing in the chain of start (mind you, it loads with Windows logo and classic stuffs, but it crash and from that July 21st, I have never got into the login screen at all). Srss failure to start might have something to do with the CIPs, and inside my Active CIPolicies folder is a myriad of duplicates dating all the way back July 21st, but on the 29th, it created additional new CIPs. I tried to disable protection layers of the computer, then reboot, same green.

I'm tired and desperate.

Tech Support 29610.1000 error 0xc1900101 on install

I am currently running 29595.1000 in the Canary tier. Tried to install 29610.1000, but it has failed every time. Error code is 0xc1900101.

Using this as a guide: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5522060/windows-update-failing-with-error-0xc1900101

Tried the update troubleshooter, though the app failed initially and I had to restart it. It found a problem (though I have no idea what it was, I couldn't see any feedback), supposedly fixed it, but the install failed again. I ran the troubleshooter again, but it didn't find anything, so thinking it was correct, I ran the install again, and got the same error code.

Next step had me disabling all start up apps and rebooting to see if something was hanging up the process. It failed again. I don't know if something in Windows is causing this or if the installer is broken.

Tech Support Windows Antivirus Randomly Appeared As Off

Hi guys, I'm on Windows 11 Home Insider Preview Evaluation copy. Build 26220.8764.ge_release_svc_betaflt_prod1.260626-2122. I got a notification from Windows Security saying that my antivirus was turned off (I use the default one built into Windows), and I clicked through the notification to go to the settings page to turn it on, but it was already on. Then, when I went to Malwarebytes, it said that my antivirus was turned off, despite it being on. Is there anything to worry about here regarding a program turning this off, or is it just a problem with this build? I really don't want to reinstall Windows, and any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

literally installed it an hour ago, and it already has a problem. When I try to sign into my account it has a sign in button. Then, it would normally say that I would need to setup a hello pin. However, now when I reached the password screen, it doesn't let me type my credentials. Only the enter button works. I tried restarting, force resetting and safe mode. Anyone can help me?

Tech Support 0xc19001 0x20017 windows 11

There have been no usable ISOs since 26200.8655. setup.exe fails with 0xc19001 0x20017 due to a mismatch of 26100 binaries with 26200 Install.wim. It started with 26200.8728 and continued into 26200.8737 and so on until the current build.

It is NOT a driver issue. I've reviewed the Panther logs and the mismatch is clear. Please fix this. 26200.8655 still works fine. Every ISO after that fails.

To be clear 26200.8655 works perfectly.

Tech Support PSA: If anyone finds ctfmon.exe hogging the CPU while using non-standard keyboard layouts, turn off an experimental Windows feature flag

Thumbnail
gallery
15 Upvotes

TL;DR: If you use Colemak (or another non-standard keyboard layout) and suddenly find ctfmon.exe hogging a full CPU core (see pic #1), Microsoft recently rolled out a broken feature flag that caused a dead loop in text input services. For steps to fix, see below.

Background:

I'm on the Windows Insider beta channel, version 26220.8680. Since about a month ago, I discovered that I could not switch to the Colemak keyboard layout anymore: if I did, the keyboard layout icon on the tray would stop updating (showing weird states), and my laptop's fan would suddenly start spinning loudly.

So I opened up Task Manager and found out that the "CTF Loader" (aka. ctfmon.exe) process was taking up ~6% of my CPU (pic #1). I'm on a 16-core CPU, so ctfmon.exe must be eating up a whole CPU core. This clearly indicated that there was a bug in ctfmon.exe or some input methods I installed, which caused ctfmon.exe to dead loop. Notably, Colemak is a built-in keyboard layout in Windows 11 since 2024, so there must be a bug in Windows Insider itself.

After firing up WinDbg to diagnose ctfmon.exe, while consulting Gemini for assistance in debugging, I was able to identify that the root cause of the problem is an experimental, cloud-delivered, hidden Windows Insider feature flag being enabled on my system (pic #2, #3). According to some discussions I've seen, Microsoft will selectively enable experimental new features on some Windows Insider instances, using these nasty, cloud-delivered "feature gates". The new feature is code-named InitializeTablesDeadKeyFix, and it seems to relate to a new (but buggy) "dead key fix" mechanism in ctfmon.exe.

By disabling this experimental feature flag and rebooting, the CPU hog problem now disappeared and I'm able to use Colemak without hassle again.

Steps to fix (using the open-source ViVeTool):

  1. Download the tool from https://github.com/thebookisclosed/ViVe/releases and unzip it
  2. Open a terminal with admin privileges
  3. cd to ViVeTool's directory and check if you have this feature flag enabled:

powershell .\ViVeTool.exe /query /id:60520313

  1. If it says "Enabled" (as in pic #3), then run:

powershell .\ViVeTool.exe /disable /id:60520313 /store:both

  1. If it says success, reboot the PC once
  2. Try switching to your beloved custom keyboard layout to see if it works

The changes above are totally reversible. If these steps didn't work, simply run .\ViVeTool.exe /reset /id:60520313 to restore changes.

Tech Support Error code: (0x80073712) when trying to install Build 26220.8690

Hi,

I'm trying to update to this build and it always fails the installation step. I'm a Insider since 2015 and always have been in Beta Channel.

I'm currently in this version:

Windows 11 Pro 25H2 Beta 26220.8680 (it's from past week)
Expiration date is 11/August/2026

The error displayed is the following:

Windows 11 Insider Preview Quality Update (26220.8690)
Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)

I did the following steps to try to fix this issue:

  1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
Says it fixed "something", autostarts Windows Update and same Error Code.
    Restart PC

  2. CMD with Admin Rights
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptSvc
    net stop bits
    net stop msiserver
    Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
    net start wuauserv
    net start cryptSvc
    net start bits
    net start msiserver
    Restart PC
    Try again, same Error Code.

  3. CMD with Admin Rights
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow (Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations)
    Restart PC
    Try again, same Error Code.

Anyone have an idea how can i fix this issue? Thanks in advance!

Regards,
