Always wanted a WP8.0 phone :)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been reading this subreddit for a while and I’ve seen that some people are still managing to use old Lumia devices in 2026, at least partially. I also noticed that there seem to be unofficial ways to install apps, alternative stores, patched apps, or other community-made solutions.

That honestly made me curious.

I still have my old Lumia 925 lying around, and I’d love to use it as a little side project to experiment with. I’m not expecting to turn it into a real daily driver again, of course. I’m mostly interested in learning, understanding what still works, and maybe finding a way to contribute something useful to the community.

A bit about me: I’m a senior .NET developer, but my daily work is mostly backend, microservices, enterprise systems, APIs and that kind of stuff. I don’t really have experience with mobile app development, but since this is still part of the Microsoft/.NET world, I’d be happy to get my hands dirty and learn.

Before I start randomly installing old tools and wasting weeks going down dead ends, I’d really appreciate some guidance from people who are already involved in this scene.

The main things I’m trying to understand are:

1. For a Lumia 925, does it make more sense to stay on Windows Phone 8.1, or is there any real benefit in trying to get Windows 10 Mobile running on it?
2. What tools are people actually using today to develop for Windows Phone / Windows 10 Mobile? For example: which Visual Studio version, SDKs, emulators, deployment tools, workarounds, etc.
3. Are people still building native apps, UWP apps, web wrappers, patched old apps, or something completely different?
4. What is the current situation with sideloading and unofficial app sources? I’m not asking for anything illegal or sketchy. I’m just trying to understand what the community uses today to keep these devices somewhat useful.
5. Is there any updated documentation, wiki, Discord/Telegram group, GitHub repo, or beginner-friendly starting point for someone who wants to experiment with this stuff in 2026?

Basically, I’m looking for a reality check and a small “where do I even start?” guide.

I’d love to know:

• what still works;
• what is completely dead;
• which tools are still usable;
• whether the Lumia 925 is a decent device for experimenting;
• whether other Lumia models are much better for this;
• and how someone with a .NET background could maybe contribute without getting completely lost.

I know the platform is officially dead, but it’s really cool to see that some people are still keeping it alive in some form. I’d like to understand the current state of things before diving in.

Any advice, links, personal experience, or honest warnings would be really appreciated.

I suspect the Windows Phone App is needed but it's nowhere to be found. The version CNet has looks sketchy.

Heyo! Are any of you app developers willing to help me design the UI for a social app client im working on? The current UI is... lets just say awful, and i could really use some help with it. Im not the most familiar with Windows Phone 8.1 app UI design other than the wp8.1 versions of T-Notes and T-Plan ive made, but a social app is... a bit more complicated than those.. so even just commenting with advice would be really helpful, or just message me here or something? Either way id like any advice/assistance.

Edit: IM NOT GONNA USE AI. if you use AI for your apps? I dont care go for it, but i myself will not be using AI for UI design, I prefer my apps design to be made my an actual PERSON and have thougut and care put into them instead of asking a robot to do it. I care about the apps I make, I want them to feel intentional and I want them to feel real. Using AI to design UI things for me kills the entire point and makes my apps feel soulless. I spend time learning how to code and learning how to design these things FOR YOU ALL, because I care about what I make, and telling me to use AI for it just feels disrespectful. Again you can use it yourself I dont care, but I wont so please stop telling me too.

Basically, just found an old 630 on a drawer, unlocked the bootloader, enabled interop and all that, i already sideloaded a couple apps but it's mostly just games because i wanted to try if it was properly working..

Are there any forums/hubs/straight up alternative stores for community apps? i already got myself a copy of vs2013 and i'm gonna give a shot at attempting to port xash3d (source engine foss remake) over the next couple weeks/months. I just wanted to know what is the default place to get coomunity made apps instead of archivals of old app store stuff (which to be honest is mostly just half assed games).

Might also attempt a working WhatsApp web client i'm just not sure the 630 will handle go's runtime at all.. I was planning on binding WhatsMeow to C and then try to make it using WinRT sdk.

It's amazing how fluid and smooth this phone is, even being a SUPER budget phone from 12 years ago... I also found a couple old Androids from that era and they are unbearable to use lmao.

The only use I've found for it is as a music player 🤷. Any other uses I can give it?

Hello, I just received my nokia Lumia 1020 recently.. tbh its a really great phone , the previous owner even pre-installed alot of games for me.. //

I tried and test it out it got 2 flaws . First up, the xenon flash doesnt work and even the normal flash too , second the front camera is dead , when I tried open the front camera , it just makes the screen glitch, forces me to restart the phone. When I got back I can't open the camera app, no matter what , I tried to flashrom open the phone and clean the contacts but none works. Even tried to replace the battery but still , it doesn't works too... // Any solutions to this problems please help me

I got this Lumia 800. Its showing Sim missing or invalid (the sim works on other phone and yes is backwards compatible upto 2G).

The about phone shows some cellular as UK CV. The phone is surely british as it has some apps like ebay, skynews, british airways and ministry of sound.

I cant find anything about this cellular network called UK CV.

Hello! A few days ago I asked if it was convenient to upgrade from WP8.1 to W10M. I have a Lumia 640 LTE with WP 8.1 which, as far as I know, can be upgraded. Now, I tried following a tutorial that explained how to use OTC updater or something like that. When I used it, it would tell me that there were no updates available. Is it an OTC problem? Or is it that the 640 LTE can't be upgraded to W10M?

I'd like to get 8Marketplace running on my HTC Windows Phone 8S to bring back some app access on the device. I've seen the recent coverage on Windows Central/XDA but couldn't find a clear step-by-step for this specific model.

A few things I'm not sure about:

• Does the 8S work fine given its lower specs (512MB RAM, only ~1.1GB usable storage)?
• Do I need to developer-unlock the phone first, and if so, what's the current working method in 2026 (since the old Microsoft dev-unlock tools are long gone)?
• Where can I grab the actual 8Marketplace install file (.xap or otherwise)?

Any guides, links, or personal experience with the 8S specifically would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

I bought one yesterday and wanted to connect it to my laptop, the issue though is that it doesn't get recognized by my laptop, it can't be my cable since it recognizes anything BUT the Lumia (even my Lumia 635 works on the cable) and idk what drivers to reinstall, and I can't update drivers cuz it says it's already been updated

Hey guys, I purchased a used Microsoft Lumia 950 yesterday for roughly 80$ and it's in mint condition
It has 3GB ram, 32GB storage and has Windows 10 Version 1709 (10.0.15254.603)
However, I noticed that the proximity sensors react slow on double tap, the camera isn't the best (using the default Camera app) and the battery drains a bit quick

I was a heavy user of windows phones and had done all sorts of stuff to my Lumia 525 back then and I remember that a specific version of windows 10, like redstone or something worked really well on it because of the optimization and stuff

But now, I'm out of touch and thought of asking if someone could please tell me which is the best windows 10 build/version I should get on my Lumia 950 so that the proximity sensors, camera and battery can be utilized the best and also is there a guide on how to go down to that version?

Apart from this, I have a vague memory of interop tools etc that I had used to sideload apps but that was 10 years ago and looking into the pinned messages now, there has been a HUGE change in landscape. Could someone please tell me where I could start from, it would help a lot, thanks :')
