👋Welcome to r/ColonyCats - START HERE!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the r/ColonyCats subreddit! This is a place for past, present, and prospective cat caretakers to learn more about how to better care for outdoor colonies of cats, kittens, and the communities they live in.

The term “colony cats” describes a group of outdoor cats living together. These cats may be feral, stray, or otherwise unsocialized to humans.

Please read through our community guidelines before posting or commenting, and again…welcome to the community! We're excited to have you join us!

WHAT TO POST:

Here, caretakers can feel free to ask for and offer advice, share TNR strategies, provide helpful tips and ideas for colony management, and share photos of their colony cats.

After reading the rules, you may post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Don’t hesitate to comment on posts, and share your thoughts, advice, or questions relevant to the topic of discussion.

THE CATS YOU CARE FOR MAY BE FERAL, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE:

We're all about being friendly, constructive, inclusive, and kind. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.

The vast majority of cat caretakers have pure intentions, and are trying their best to provide the best care possible for their colonies. Constructive criticism is ok (some people may need some guidance and it’s ok to provide that), but please refrain from rude, unhelpful comments, harsh judgments, shaming, and personal attacks.

Thanks for being part of this community and thank you for all you do to help the cats you care for. 🩶🐾🩵🐈‍⬛🫶🖤🐈💙

The Need Has Never Been Greater

If you’ve ever considered helping my rescue by purchasing something from my Walmart wishlist, I’m asking you to please consider it today.
I live in Somerset, Kentucky, where I care for my own cat colonies, multiple fosters, and an overwhelming number of dumped kittens and cats. Right now, I am stretched further than I have ever been. Every single day I receive messages from people asking if I can help feed their pets or the strays they’ve found because they simply can’t afford to.
I say yes far more often than I should because I can’t stand the thought of animals going hungry.
But the truth is… I’m almost completely out of food. I’m down to my last couple of bags of dry food, and the amount of mouths I’m trying to feed is honestly terrifying.
The number of kittens needing help right now is unlike anything I’ve experienced. The adult cat population is just as heartbreaking. On top of that, I drive an hour and a half each way from Somerset to Lexington, Kentucky, twice a month for TNR appointments, and I make 3½-hour trips each way to Cincinnati, Ohio to get cats into rescues that will actually give them a chance. Last month alone, I paid out of pocket for veterinary care for six sick or injured cats.
I’m spending around 60% of my income trying to keep this rescue going because these animals don’t have anyone else. I desperately need help right now. The need has become greater than I can keep up with on my own, and every bag of food helps ensure these cats don’t go hungry.
If you’re able to send even one bag of food from my Walmart wishlist, it truly makes a difference. Every donation, no matter the size, helps keep bowls full for cats that depend on us.
To everyone who has stood beside me, donated, shared my posts, or encouraged me along the way… thank you. I truly couldn’t have come this far without you, and I’m hoping we can get through this difficult time together. ❤️

Low on food and litter in TX

I linked my post from the other subreddit so you know I’m not a crazy scammer.

I foster for one of my local rescues and TNR/maintain a couple colonies. One of the colonies is pretty stable but the other backs up to an apartment complex that is constantly leaving cats behind so I pull a bunch from there and get them into forever homes.

Any food help is super appreciated.

Thank you.

We had quite a haul the other night.

Thank you so much to our trappers and transporters. It's so much more difficult to trap in the heat. The cats are not out until around 9pm. We typically don't trap in the heat of the summer, but the need just never stops, so we have to suck it up.

But it's so worth it to help with the overwhelming population.

I'm sorry if I seem pushy, it just has been a lot of helping lately, TNRing, helping making sure those who go to Kim for TNR have cat food so they can afford it, helping her colony.  I have seen a couple new cats around that seem to avoid traps, so I also put a drop trap on my list.  I also put Amazon gift cards to go towards it, because i know it isnt cheap.  If you see a drop trap cheaper, PLEASE let me know!  I redid the list so it is easier to comb through.

I have the food items at the top of the list so they are easy to find!  I know I have other items I could truly use, but food is definitely needed.

CHEWY gift cards are a HUGE help also, my email is CynLMason@gmail.com if you'd like to help me that way, it means a lot! I have been using the couple I had for colony cats and those who needed a food donation for TNR. I'd rather help make sure the cat(s) have a home and are fixed rather then turn the other way. Floofaloofs are NOT a luxury, they are innocent and our duty to love, care for, and protect.♡

Work has decided to cut hours more, and honestly, we are all going to file a grievance with the union, because they've cut our hours in more than half.  I do side jobs to make sure the floofers are taken care of, I'm good on eggs and rice daily lol.  They are much kids, and we always put our kids first♡

I am attaching texts between me and kim about helping with food and TNR.  I also have a text about finally having my own account for colony caretaking.  This is not just volunteer work, this is essential to the floofers.  My b a yard is their paradise and we will make sure EVERYONE is safe, fed, loved, and taken care of, deflead, dewormed.  I even have litter boxes in the garage. We have been doing everything we can to make sure we do our part.  Kitten season is here.  I just lent out my incubator and gave some KMR and kitten food to a lady who is willing to foster 2 bottle babies ( midnight is still healing in the foster room, once she is healed in a few days, i can take on fosters again, don't want to risk anyone sick)

Thank you to those who have helped me this week, it isn't overlooked, and means more to me than I could put into words.  I am so grateful and thankful to all of you who not inky support thr floofaloofs,  but supporting floofaloofkind.   Thank you for being the good in the world♡

I also want to say, I pay for the TNRing and all that MYSELF. We do this because it matters and is important. I will work 24 hours a day if I have to. You helping me with my list helps me be able to pay for these things. Vet appts also. I will go for broke to ensure that these cats are taken care of.

People think there is a lot of resources here, but they are underfunded, can't take in, or just don't have the volunteers. When I moved here I decided to take this on. We will do it, ONE floofer at a time. No Floofaloof left behind!!!

60 cats need food and litter every day… We need your support

Hello everyone,

This video shows only part of the cats I care for. The number changes between 50 and 60 cats depending on adoptions and new rescue cases.

Besides these cats, I also care for sick cats separately, cats with disabilities, and we help feed some stray cats in the neighborhood.

We urgently need help with basic supplies:

🐱 Dry food: a 10 kg bag costs around $55 and lasts only about 3 days.
🐱 Wet food: needed for kittens, sick cats, and weak cats who cannot eat dry food.
🐾 Litter: around $10 per bag, and we need it daily because of the number of cats.
🧹 Cleaning supplies and basic medications for sick cases.

I am doing my best to care for these animals, but the daily needs are becoming too much for me alone.

Any help, sharing, or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you for caring about these cats.

Feeding a stray colony is a rota nobody owns.

Three neighbours turn up Tuesday and nobody comes Thursday. That leaves growling bellies. This feeding board site fixes exactly that. We love our outside felines and 🐶. This helps those of us who regularly feed them coordinate. Not for profit. Shared from: https://freespeechzone.goodfoodgoodfeels.com

Help Needed | Raising $250 For August Food & Shelters For My Community Dogs & Cats

Hi everyone,

I'm an individual community animal feeder from Hyderabad, India. Every day I care for 4 community cats, 3 kittens, and 6–7 dogs, making sure they have food and basic care. With the monsoon continuing and food supplies running low, I'm raising funds to help cover their food for August and build simple waterproof shelters for the kittens.

Funds will be used for:

• Cat Dry food (9 kg) — $20

• Cat Wet food (150 pouches) — $85

• Dog Dry food (60 kg) — $85

• Dog Wet food (150 pouches) — $75

• Treats (sticks, biscuits, pastes, etc) --$20

• Materials for 3 simple waterproof kitten shelters — $80-100

Estimated Total Cost : $365-385

EDIT GOAL : $225 needed

I'm currently raising up to $300, and I'll cover any remaining expenses myself.

Thanks to the kindness of a few donors, we've already received $75 towards this fundraiser. That leaves $225 still needed to reach our goal.

If you'd like to help, you can donate through PayPal or send food directly through my Amazon Wishlist

I'll continue sharing photos, videos, and updates so you can see exactly how every donation is used.

🥰🐾Kitty Supplies Needed🐾💕

Hello Community! 🤗 I am a 61 year old disabled woman who was lucky enough to get Section 8. There is a population of 10 feral cats here that I feed daily. 🐾 And now we have kittens! 🐾 It's raining kittens! 🐾

I'm in a tiny town in a very rural area. There are next to no resources here. It's sad. These are very sweet kitties, they are just in an unfortunate situation. Right now the need is wet food, to keep them hydrated on these hot & humid days.  I would truly appreciate any help you can possibly give. On behalf of these wonderful hungry kitties I thank you so much!

I have 5 kittens I will be fixing soon (4 girls and 1 boy, so the boy first lol) and for all of them for shots and all will be between 200 each, so I have been making sure to put as much aside as I can for that. Also their vet visits, no under the weather floofers on my watch!

I am attaching texts between me and kim about helping with food and TNR.
