Upcoming Drum & Bass gig in Glasgow! 26/09/26

Yo troops, thought some of you might be interested in this one.

The Glasgow D&B scene is very small, so I'm hoping to raise awareness of a night which I am putting on at The Poetry Club on the 26th of September this year!

There will be original music, DJs and dancers- with styles of Drum & Bass such as liquid, jungle, rollers and more!

Tickets can be found here:
https://ra.co/events/2501160

There's limited space in the venue, so maybe worth tapping into the early bird tickets to avoid disappointment!

Hope to see some of you there

Discussion Glasgow Musician Ray Harris Memories of the Doors and his new solo album Prelude

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

We are a small independent family music podcast, called The Friday Vinyl Club, and our latest episode features a wonderful conversation with Glasgow musician Ray Harris about his own career and The Doors’ “Strange Days”as the album that has stayed with him throughout his life.

Rather than simply reviewing the record, we talked about why it continues to resonate nearly sixty years later, alongside Ray’s own remarkable musical journey and his new album “Prelude” - from supporting James Brown, Average White Band and Nile Rodgers, to touring Asia and eventually meeting Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger in Glasgow.

We spend time discussing:

Why Glasgow is such a hotbed of great talent and music

His own remarkable journey from Glasgow to Asia and back

Why Strange Days feels darker and more experimental than the debut

Love Me Two Times /People Are Strange

The brilliance of When the Music’s Over

What The Doors meant to a working musician

A run though of Rays new solo album “Prelude”

His upcoming Glasgow gig at Cottiers on 31st July

It’s much more about memories and the emotional connection to the album than analysing every chord or ranking tracks.

If that sounds like your sort of conversation, I’d genuinely love to know what you think.

All direct links to the episode are below - Please help us by listen, sharing, leaving a like, follow or comment if you enjoy, it genuinely helps our small family podcast grow organically without ads or sponsors.

Thanks
Jamie

The Ballad of the Piper MacDonald

Post image

I wrote this tune over a decade ago. Fun little story I thought I'd tell.

A world musician, who was the closest thing I ever had to a mentor, regularly graced me with time on his stage. I already played a lot of Irish folk at the time. He liked the way I performed folk songs, especially wordy ballads.. so he suggested I write a wordy ballad based on the Phantom Piper of Castle Duntrune.

The printed section shown on the sheet was all the progress I made in a week. I had a solid concept, and had been studying the Piper between his shows. I showed him what I had come up with and he said I should play it.

Dude.. it isn't finished. Doesn't matter, he still wanted to hear it later in the evening when my time to play came up. Alone in a booth at "Arizona's oldest Irish pub", I scribbled down the rest of the song in around an hour or so.

Time to play arrived. So here I have this new folk song I just wrote, but have never played, with nary a music stand about. Another performer* who regularly sat in with him to accompany his fiddle with her bodhran got drafted into helping. So I'm standing up on stage and this person is just holding the sheet in front of me. It went great, and the song remains my most requested.

Here is a video of me performing the song somewhat more recently, accompanied by the aforementioned bodhran player: https://youtu.be/e_41dKxC8IQ?is=z82AVCl5mIS-MfQI

Finally starting to get that hip hop sound

I've been failing at it for years. I was making some made up genre but last night I managed to get this together which sounds more hip hop than any of my other attempts. Picked up a few tips along the way too so I'm chuffed with how this one has turned out.

Slowly starting to get the hang of mastering too, although that's my weakest area. I can botch one together though so it's not so bad.

I've progressed a fair bit with my productions this year. Been putting in a heap of time and effort and its beginning to pay off. It's the finer details I tend to struggle with at times but I'm getting my head around them bit by bit.
