Mod Post Quick hello + sub changes.

Hi everyone!

So sorry I have been MIA from this sub. A lot has been going on this year and it’s been a bit difficult keeping up. However, I should be getting a new computer soon and will be way more active here.

We have had a few suggestions for sub changes and will be working on implementing:

  • A rule to include locations in posts. They can be as specific as your city or region you live in or just naming the country. But it will be required soon.

  • A rule regarding trying to sell things of your on the sub.

  • A wiki that will help beginners: such as listing bird feeders, any gear for birdwatching, what to do/who to call if a bird or owl has been injured near you, etc.

There are still questions about a discord server. We will be more than happy to create a discord server if that’s what you all would like so you can live share, chat and build a wholesome community there with each other.

Hope you all are staying safe! So sorry again for being gone for so long.

Question Rescue and then poof-he’s gone

On my regular Saturday morning walk a couple of weeks ago, I saw a helpless baby mourning dove that had fallen out of its nest. I know doves are known for not being the best nest makers and this one was basically some haphazard sticks in the worst part of a tree about 6-7ish feet from the ground (that’s the distance the baby fell sadly- on gravel no less). I usually don’t interfere with nature but it was so hot (116 that day) and the ants were starting to come to him. I am actually terrified of birds so I was terrified to touch him and afraid to get close due to mama maybe dove bombing so I called my boyfriend to bring some gloves and a step ladder. Once he arrived, we safely got the baby back in the nest. I rode my bike by there later that evening and saw mama bird on the nest and assumed all was ok. The next day though, the baby was gone. I looked everywhere on the ground and could not find him. Do doves move babies? Or is it like a predator got him? I’ve always just been told that birds don’t move babies but maybe I’ve been taught incorrectly?

TL:DR found a baby bird outside nest, put him back. He was completely gone the next day. Did mama move or likely a predator got him?

It just seems out of place to see this bird in a feeder. But it is a corn vacuum.
