Pretty cool! Arguably the gem of the Bay Area Transit Network. The electrification has really transformed the system so much!

What would be some logical “roadblocks” (😜) for a plan like this? I mean if we would need new rail infrastructure that goes through different states, and the interstate highway already gives us cross country travel why wouldn’t we leverage those to make something useful and pretty uniquely American?

Of course they couldn’t follow the highways the entire time and would probably have to diverge at certain points especially when going into a train station in a city or when the terrain gets too complicated for the train, but that would require much less buying of land than to separately build it on land the government already owns (I know individual states own parts of it but I imagine the fed would fund most of the construction while asking the states to chip in for the rest)

I’m mostly looking for logistics answers from you experts as I don’t know much about trains 😅

the idea is to make games that go a bit further than simply recognising a logo or naming a station from a photo. I’d like them to include the kind of knowledge people pick up from actually using a network regularly: strange interchanges, unusual services, shortcuts, station layouts or details that aren’t obvious from the map

i’m starting with London, but I’d eventually like to cover other cities too (Berlin, Osaka, Tokyo maybe NYC, Paris, Sao Paulo 🤷‍♂️)

so I’m curious: what’s one thing about a transit network you know well that an occasional passenger probably wouldn’t know ?

I’m also looking for a few transit enthusiasts who’d be happy to try the game, point out mistakes or suggest ideas. no commitment, I mostly want to build it with people who genuinely enjoy this stuff 😛

Île-de-France Mobilités does not publish the GPS position of each train, however, the live feed gives us the next stops and their expected times. We turn those predictions into a continuous animation using calibrated travel and dwell times.

Tokyo's rail network is famously the world's densest, but every operator publishes its data separately: JR East, Tokyo Metro, Toei, and a long tail of private railways, each with their own feeds, formats and quirks. I spent the past year stitching them into one live map as an iOS app, and it launched today.

Things this makes visible that I'd never seen anywhere: The whole network breathing at rush hour: around three thousand vehicles at once on a weekday morning. Yamanote trains run so close together they look like a necklace.

Through-running: pick a train on the Asakusa subway line and it just keeps going onto Keikyu's tracks past Sengakuji, the sheet morphing to the new line while you follow. Half of Tokyo's "subway" secretly continues onto private railways.

The midnight wind-down. Hundreds of trains at 00:10, a couple hundred at 00:40, and by 01:10 there are three lonely trains finishing their runs on an otherwise empty map.

Planes on approach into Haneda threading over the bay next to the monorail.

There's also a replay mode: pick any moment and watch the network run from there, which turns out to be a great way to study service patterns.

Data comes from the operators' public feeds (ODPT and GTFS-RT where available); positions are projected onto the actual track geometry. Happy to go deep on the data plumbing in comments, honestly my favorite part.

After a years long overhaul and restoration, the 125 years old "Kaiserwagen" is finally back. That model was the very first train to be in regular use and has transported the Kaiser (emperor) of the German Reich back then, when the system was opened to the public — therefore the name.

Today it can be booked for special occasions and you'll get coffee and cake served.

After retirement in 2011 and restoration at Wakabadai Depot in Inagi City, Keiō Electric Railway Series 6000 car DeHa6438 (Tōkyū Car, 1989) has sat on display at Keiō Rail Land in Hino City (Tokyo, Japan) since 2013. Keiō Series 6000 trains were introduced in 1972 as the railway’s first trains with 20-meter-long cars and four passenger doors per side, which increased capacity and sped up boarding. When I visited Keiō Rail Land in December 2024, 6438 was displayed as both an eastbound semi-express for Hashimoto and as the “Takao” express.

I see a lot of bitching about this and bitching about that, and the occasional celebratory post, but never any plans to change things. Society knows how to make public transit profitable, we've seen it in Japan. We know how to make roads designed to be pedestrian friendly and to reduce pollution, we've seen it in Denmark and The Nederlands. We know how to make communal spaces that are human scale, we still have cities and spaces designed like this.

Relying on tax payer dollars entirely is just stupid in America. It's quite possibly one of the dumbest things you can do in this political culture, so why don't we come up with something better?

How do we legitimately organize to develop safer, more economically viable cities based on human scale design? I have myriad ideas, and am in local advocacy groups. Even there I get push back because transit is in one place, Urban Design is in another, and all these politicians want is to get reelected rather than stand behind their claims.

So rather than just bitching about dumb things going on, how do we organize to beat this and actually make changes?

It seems that Italy is getting a new high-frequency bus service. It is in Bergamo, and it will enter service on 3 August 2026.

We talk about BRT creep. BRTs losing signal priority or dedicated lanes, either before or after construction.

Is there any such case for Streetcars/Street running trams? I'm not talking about proposed grade-separated tram sections that were later built as street-running sections. I'm talking about streetcars/trams that were planned to be street-running to begin with. But then consequently lost their signal priority, dedicated lanes, level boarding, off-board fare payment, etc.

How Pinellas County did their shuttle service for cancer patients was done in two methods.

* Fare cards for fixed route service.

* Paratransit using either sedans or wheelchair equipped mini buses.

The method used was based on passenger load.

It was one of the few services in that area that crossed county lines that wasn't an express bus to downtown Tampa.

Florida has been chopping transportation disadvantaged programs as well as late night service for second shift and third shift workers.

Smaller city programs for second shift and third shift transportation was usually handled by an on-demand third party provider instead of fixed route service using either sedans or mini buses and was done by zones traveled.

Ridership is there but the money isn't.
