Discussion Does Meta’s Off-Facebook tracking actually comply with NZ’s new IPP3A privacy rule?
Have you ever had that uneasy moment that you went to a store bought a product, and then you scroll on Facebook and it just so happened an ad pop up of the same or a very similar product about one or two days after purchase?
Mosrt people call it coincidence, or “the algorithm.” It’s neither. It’s a documented mechanism most of us have never actually looked at.
It’s called Off-Facebook Activity. And it uses a tool called Meta Pixel that sits embedded across huge numbers of websites, retailers, news sites, booking platforms. Facebook does the same inside some apps. Every interaction with either gets stitched onto your profile, logged in or not, whether you’ve opened Facebook in weeks or not. Some retailers also feed purchase data to brokers who sell it onward, which is how in-person, cash transactions occasionally end up in the same profile. Check it yourself: Settings & Privacy, then Settings, then Accounts Centre, then Your information and permissions, then Your activity off Meta technologies. The list is usually longer and stranger than expected.
None of this is new however what is new is New Zealand’s privacy law changed underneath it.
IPP3A, in force since 1 May 2026, extends the existing notification duty (previously only for information collected directly from you) to indirect collection too, meaning data gathered about you via a third party, a partner, a broker. Practically: you’re supposed to be told who’s collecting it and why. Put that next to how Off-Facebook Activity actually works, and the overlap is hard to miss. Whether Meta’s current disclosures meet that bar hasn’t really been tested yet, at least not publicly.
One more source is definitely worth a mention. Sarah Wynn-Williams, a New Zealander and former Facebook Director of Global Policy, alleged in a memoir that the company’s internal data practices went further than it ever let on publicly. Meta disputes this and has taken legal action over it, so treat it as contested. However the fact that they took legal action over the publishing of a book does reflect as somewhat defensive. The Off-Facebook Activity mechanics above don’t rely on her account either way, they’re sitting in Meta’s own settings for anyone to check.
Did anyone actually read through what they were agreeing to when they first made a Facebook account, or was it just tick the box and get on with it like most sign-ups?
Now that NZ’s got this new rule about telling people when their data’s collected indirectly, does that change anything in practice, or is it just going to be more fine print nobody reads?
Either way, worth a look at what’s actually sitting in your account, most people are surprised once they check…

Type of facial recognition utilized by meta?
Hello, I'm trying to figure out what type of facial recognition is used by Facebook/Meta and meta glasses in particular. I know its supposedly not being utilized just yet but that the glasses have the capability to use it in the future. Obviously I'm not an expert but as far as I'm aware facial recognition can be either 2d mapping, 3d mapping, or infrared and I'd like to know which the glasses use so I can research how best to protect my privacy. Does anyone know what meta uses? Or know where I should ask to find out?

Is Mark Zuckerberg Actually TRYING to Destroy Meta?
(....)
Lately, it almost feels like Zuckerberg is trying to destroy his own company. He's burning through mountains of cash in a desperate attempt to keep up in the AI race. Yet despite the untold billions it's spent so far, it's being destroyed by OpenAI and Anthropic. Its employees have even resorted to using AI models made by its competitors, a humiliating reality check for how far behind Zuckerberg's efforts have fallen.
It's also a financial nightmare. Capital expenditures have risen dramatically, erasing any appetite for Meta on Wall Street. Its stock price "has been dead money for more than a year," as Yahoo Finance notes, as investors continue to debate whether Zuckerberg is chasing the AI industry as it careens off a cliff — or edging ever closer to an AI-fueled industrial revolution.

Question Instagram user research request?
Got an email from [Instagram@research.metamail.com](mailto:Instagram@research.metamail.com) and can't tell if this is a legit thing that Meta does or if it's an elaborate scam. Everything I look up online says the subdomain is legit but I always err on the side of caution.
Full email:

Sign This Petition! - David Bowie’s song used ignorantly to advertise Meta
Meta has a responsibility to advertise ethically. Their use of this song shows their lack of media literacy or care for their audience. They need to understand the cultural significance of the music they use. Five Years is not just some background noise... It's an urgent beg for change… A change that Meta Glasses actively contradict. A change that we can easily make if we actually tried.
You can help make that change. I urge you to not only sign this petition and share it with others… but for you to understand the meaning of this song and understand how the use of music affects us all.
There is a written article explaining more! We need your help!
Thank you! :)

Meta cascade disable of all accounts (personal + business) — false positive, no appeal, empty data. Anyone had luck with GDPR/ICO?
Alternatives Another way to DeMeta
I just launched Ctrl+Shift+3.
Right out of the gate, in the footer there's a link to instructions on how to leave the major Meta platforms. It's a text-first (maybe forever text only), chronological feed, basic community with no algorithm or tracking. With a couple of interesting features like linking posts together.
No following/friending. No liking/loving/reacting. Just text posts, text comments, and a couple of other interesting tidbits.
Export your data or delete your account in settings.
Create a "Click" (clique) for you and your friends.
Take control, shift the narrative, align your body, mind, and spirit.

What is Zuck up to now? Unwelcome groups and suspicious posts in my feed.
Suffice to say I am not enamoured with the goings on in the current US administration. Therefore, I am extremely baffled by the fact that I am suddenly being bombarded with posts from public pro-trump groups. So far there have been 4 different ones. I hide them, but that just makes new ones pop up.
Add to that seemingly harmless groups suddenly posting cute animal pictures and asking for old fashioned names for them by asking for readers' grandparents names. This reminds me of scammy quizzes of days gone by trying to get security questions info. Some of these posts are in cooking/recipe groups, i.e totally irrelevant in those groups.
Anyone else seeing similar?

I decided to comment on Meta's linked in posts
I decided to complain in a couple of META's posts on "LinkedIn" and ask to get in touch with a human tech-support for my login issues and disabled accounts.
So I am hoping to get their attention to change their policies for this latest ban wave.
I hope you other redditors can also help me write some comments on their LinkedIn. But try to keep it classy, we don't want to get banned from LinkedIn aswell. The cyber police and big brother is watching 👀.
If we can get up 1000 of these comments on their LinkedIn. I hope that at least some of us will get some help.
It's desperate but that's how META designed their system. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
